Day 32: Lunch

May 20, 2008 08:37

Sanosuke hadn't quite been ready to part ways from Kenshin, but his nurse was insistent, and she was offering food. That second thing was what really got Sano off the couch and headed to the cafeteria. And at the very least, the thing about Okita had been settled, which meant the fighter could focus on his meal ( Read more... )

((Waiting for Roland.))

The meeting with the doctor had been interesting. Not necessarily eventful or progressive, no, and certainly not helping out his "insanity", but interesting, absolutely. A psychopath and a doctor far too used to dealing with psychopaths ... well, he hadn't been sedated, so he wasn't going to complain.

Even if he'd felt there was an overall patronizing tone.

Now, then ... to find whoever had contacted him on the bulletin board. Kimbley took a tray without looking at what was on it and sat a few tables away from the entrance, waiting for someone familiar from last night. It could be the short kid, or the girl who didn't say anything, or whoever pulled him away from the bitch, or maybe the guy who'd pulled her away, or (and there was a pretty low chance of this) the bitch herself. She might be stupid enough to strike back during the day.

Well then, it was time. After two shifts missed, Roland had to admit that he was a little curious as to what was going to happen. The person he had met last night was at least minimally interesting, and there had to be some reason that Lust had ordered him killed. The entire situation appealed to the writer in Roland... and really, the demon was just desperate for an excuse to kill and eat someone. Anyone.

Taking some pizza- sustenance of the gods, at least back in college!- on his plate, Roland ambled over to the man from before, easing into the seat opposite from him. "...so. Mind if I get down to business immediately?" Or else he might get distracted by thoughts of how hungry he was, and that wouldn't bode well for anyone.

Kimbley's eyes fixed on the man as soon as he headed in toward him. So the calm one from last night, who had pulled him off the bitch. Could have been worse.

"Go ahead." He didn't know what kind of business could be necessary - sure, the conversation had been cut short last night, but they hadn't exactly been talking about pressing matters. He'd given his side of the story and was ready to leave when morning came. What could be left?

"Very well. In short... why would Lust want you dead so badly she'd send someone after you?" After asking that, Roland tore into his pizza slice with a near-vehemence: he was so hungry that he felt like a chewing exercise would be better than nothing, and the pepperoni and sausage was at least meat. Not filling at all, but meat nevertheless.

Anything to keep him from gnawing on anyone else. He was just a tad upset that the antics of the night had kept him from finding a meal.

Kimbley watched the man tear into his food like a wild animal, one eyebrow raised. He didn't respond until the man had finished eating his first slice, mildly wary of interrupting such a vicious attack.

"I don't know," he said honestly. And he didn't. Why would she want him dead? He could see her wanting him maimed, sure, but not necessarily dead. "Homunculi are inhuman, so they don't need reasons to try and kill humans. Could be jealousy, could be something I don't know about." He shrugged, still ignoring his own food. "You'd think she'd want to thank me for pretty much killing one of her enemies."

Interesting that he didn't know. Did Lust just have a whim? ...no, probably not. Though Roland hadn't seen much of the woman, she'd struck him as a rather cold, rather efficient sort of woman. Surely not someone who'd set a demon on someone else for no good reason. Or at least not a reason that struck her as a good one.

"Homunculi... that's what they're called? Interesting." He knew where the term came from, of course; it made him start wondering if there was more of a mythological connotation than he had originally thought. Still. Kimbley dropped a hint, and Roland dutifully picked it up. "'Pretty much' killing someone? Enemy or not, maybe she'd see you as a threat?" He wondered if Kimbley would pick up that hint, that Roland was curious as to the how. He hadn't carried a weapon with him into danger; that meant that either he'd lost his, or his weapon wasn't of the physical variety.

He noted the hint, resting his elbow on the table and leaning on it slightly.

"I found her enemy's weakness and handed it over to his enemy, who gave me back my spot in the military in return." Kimbley gave a one-shoulder shrug. "Since I doubt she's quite as stupid as he was in regards to having a weak point readily available, I couldn't pull off the same thing twice." Probably. And besides, who the hell would he get power from in that regard? He got lucky in that Greed was against all the other homunculi, so nobody was going to come back after him. Except the snake, but she'd been taken care of.

He glanced over at the man now, a question rising in his mind.

"What's your interest in her?"

A military type, was he? Roland nodded as he took that information into consideration; the way he handled that demon had hinted at some sort of training, but that fit nicely with what he'd just been told. Now the idle question was who Lust's former enemy had been and how everything had played out. 'Idle,' as said enemy wasn't a factor anymore, more than likely.

At the question, Roland smiled and shrugged. "I spoke to her once, and a friend of hers a time or two more. There's a little bit of common ground." A very little, but Roland was happy with what he could get. "Also, mind if I ask what those marks on your hands are?"
