Dayshift 31: Doctor's Office 10 (Dr. Burroughs)

There wasn't so much of a welcoming committee as there was a rush to get everything situated, but it wasn't in Maggie to protest to that. It was a bigger establishment than the Recovery House, that was for sure, but there was something cozy about the distance from home. Either that or the cup of coffee she held was warming her hands to the point ( Read more... )

So they really were going to take her in for therapy? The idea of being stuck alone in a room with one of the doctors of Landel's was kind of unnerving. Ever since that evening on the buses, where all the nurses and orderlies had transformed into those creepy-looking things, Anise's trust in the staff had been lower than ever. Were the doctors like that, too? She couldn't let her guard down.

When she was led into the room, Anise stood by the entrance with her back straight and her hands on her hips. She cast a quick glance at the door as the departing nurse closed it behind her, and then fixed her suspicious gaze on the other person in the room. Her doctor was a woman? So much for any hope of using her feminine charm to get out of here.

Not willing to budge from her place near the door just yet, she waited for the doctor to make the first move.

Ah, there she was. Seemed a little nervous, but it wasn't as if that was at all uncommon. Maggie gave the girl a smile, motioning for her to take a seat in the chair by her desk. "Why don't you sit down for now and tell me a little about yourself, Anise? I promise, I don't bite."

Did she just call her Anise? The tiny Fon Master Guardian felt her heart stop for just a moment at the sound of her own name. This was the first time any member of the staff had addressed her by it. Did that mean this doctor was dropping the farce? And if so... was Anise in danger now?

But she couldn't just run away, right when she was finally face to face with somebody who might know the truth behind the institute - even if it was an enemy. Doing her best to keep the anxiety from showing on her face, she moved over to the chair, not taking her eyes off the doctor for a moment, and sat down.

With a shrug, she gave the uncooperative reply, "What am I supposed to tell you? It sounds like you know plenty already." Since the woman already used her real name, she might as well drop the rest of the act, Anise thought.

"To tell you the truth," she said, "this is my first day working here- despite what it seems, I don't know everything about you or anyone else for that matter. But I promise, you can tell me whatever you like. How you're feeling, what you remember..." Anything to help her understand what the girl was really like; paper could only tell you so much. "I don't want you to feel like you can't trust me."
