Peony continued his approach to the north hallway, confident that he knew where he was going. He'd come up here a few nights ago and not forgotten what had happened here yet. And while the prospect of a horrible monster with a horrible smell making him throw up all over the place again didn't sound very cool at all, he was certain he could get these strapping young men to take a few hits for him.

Peony was less than easy to anger, and easygoing in most every sense. So when the other two started talking behind his back, Peony just chuckled. "Oh, you guys. It wasn't just any old guard, of course!" His eyes turned stony as he turned back to Haseo, eyeing him with an almost uncharacteristic seriousness - which might be a little surprising to those who didn't really know him. It was his emperor's face. "Keep your guard up."

He sighed, gesturing with his flashlight. "If I don't make it back in one piece-" He searched his mind for the words. "Well, you know how annoying it'd be for everyone, rogue Fabre. Tell me, Haseo, where are you from? Somewhere in Malkuth? Kimlasca? Daath, perhaps?" As threatening as Peony could probably sound saying these words, his tone had a certain gentleness to it, but at the same time a hint of regality. It was a trait endearing to his subjects, when he actually spoke seriously. This was rare.

Haseo's voice was so much like Luke's that it was almost unnatural. ...As unnatural as a replica. It couldn't be simply coincidence that they sounded exactly the same. It simply couldn't.

What Siegfried has said was probably true: the whole comment about the two being "combat-honed" made it seem like the both of them were being toted around just for their own abilities in that area. How Peony could have known about himself being skilled that way, though, would just be wild conjecture on his own part. It was true that there were strength in sheer numbers so maybe their guide was abiding by that principle.

A pause in his step followed the blonde's turn back to him with the unusually icy stare. Haseo didn't know the man well so he wasn't completely startled by the sudden odd change in demeanor, but it surely didn't go unnoticed. (Personalities of others doing a complete hundred-and-eighty degree flip was hard not to notice.) The strange mannerisms didn't stop with just an uncharacteristic expression or tone of voice, but continued as Peony gave him titles and or asked him of places that he had never even heard. "Rouge Fabre?" What in the world was a Fabre.

The confusion that all of the questions resulted in was written clearly on the adepts face. Maybe Peony was talking about something inside the institute itself, Having not gone outside the room much made it possible that they were just terms that he hadn't encountered yet. "Look, I don't know what you're talking about." Raising a hand to muffle through his white hair cemented the look of uncertainty, "Are those names--Kimlaska, Mulkuth, and Daath--names for the patient wings or something?"

This was new. One minute Peony was his usual cheerful easy-going self, and the next he was actually being serious. He couldn’t be sure exactly what caused the change, but from the way Peony was addressing Haseo, it was something to do with the white-haired young man.

Listening to the exchange, Siegfried realised that Peony must believe that Haseo was from his world, and judging from Haseo’s confusion, he apparently wasn’t. Siegfried kept quiet for the time being, leaving Peony to explain.

Peony paused for a moment, looking Haseo in the eye. ...Then his face softened just like that, and he started to laugh. He'd just made a little bit of a fool out of himself, hadn't he? "Hahaha, they're countries. Sorry about that. You sound so much like a pal of mine that I thought you were a replica. I mean, you don't look quite the same, but you know replica technology these days, making replicas that are so alike that they're different.."

He shrugged, pushing into the next room, finding it already unlocked. Damn! People had probably beaten them to the fat loot! Or killed the monster guard - there was no sound coming from inside, no sign of battle. There was no time to waste! He'd keep talking once he got inside.
