Nightshift 30: Main Hallway 1-Center

[ Coming from here.]Luckily, they were at the far end of the hall and could back away from the fight now taking place in the hallway outside the patient blocks. Tyler kept casting backwards glances over his shoulder as he and Reid fled. As they dashed to a safe distance down into the main stretch of hall, he finally had to slow and stop, feeling ( Read more... )

By the time the both of them had successfully exited the entry room, Yukari slammed the door behind her harder than necessary. She kept her back against it for a few seconds before thinking the spider might do something like slam up against it from the other side, so she quickly slid away from it. That didn't happen after waiting, and Yukari let out a huge sigh of relief.

Oh, god.

Her knees felt like they were about to give out, but before that happened, Yukari allowed herself to collapse to a sit on the floor. That was... she didn't even know how to describe it, it must have been a million things, with none of them being good.

"Are... are you okay?" she asked her teammate through her heavy breathing.

They were lucky to be alive, let alone okay, but Ken--struggling to catch his breath--stared down at himself to assess the damage. His fingers and arms were cut while blood was dripping from his shoulder when the spider had stabbed him. The swollen feeling in his back indicated the area had been bruised; no surprise considering how hard he had been slammed.

On top of it all, he lost his only weapon.

He wasn't going to be telling Yukari any of that, however. "I... I'm okay," he managed. "...You?"

Not really.

Yukari let out a very wry, short laugh; it was way too close of a call not to. "I- I think so," she said. "I only need a moment." If it were up to her, she would have preferred to stay there and not get up at all for the rest of the night. Of course, she knew she couldn't do that-- there were others out in the hall, but it was entirely possible it wasn't safe out here, either.

She finally looked up at Ken, and, as well as she could without her flashlight, got a good look at his condition. Instantly, she felt terrible; once again she couldn't rely on Io to perform a Dia spell to make things better for the both of them. And once again, this was another time she failed to protect someone the way she wanted to.

Come on, Io, please. It didn't matter how much she willed for her Persona to emerge, they simply didn't work that way, and Yukari knew that; it didn't keep her from wishing it, though.

She shook her head slowly. "Sorry," she apologized. "I couldn't do much."

Ken heaved an exhausted sigh and sank slowly onto the floor besides Yukari. He, too, was regretting the lack of Evokers; a Dia spell would be perfect. That, and Nemesis would have had no trouble keeping the eight-legged monstrosity at bay. It made the boy swear internally thinking how easy the situation could have been handled.

Still, they weren't dead. The cuts and bruises were far from serious; they could eventually be mended. That had to count for something. "It's all right," Ken told Yukari. "If anything, I should have kept a better eye out." He brushed a stray strand of hair away from his eyes and sighed.

"Guess spiders really hate us, huh?" he added as an afterthought.

Yukari didn't bother refraining from narrowing her eyes. "Tell me about it," she murmured in response. If she didn't hate them before, she certainly did now.

"So much for those files," she said, obviously not pleased in the least. They didn't know what exactly were in the rooms they wanted to head to, but there could have been something useful in them! Now, there was no way either of them could go back in there, not unless they wanted to deal with that again. With a frown, Yukari suggested, "What do you think about waiting for midnight again? We didn't last that long yesterday."

Which was odd, it felt like their night had lasted longer than that.

They didn't have a choice when he thought about it. Not as though the two could wander about the hallways as they previously could. What with no weapon and all. (Not even a flashlight!) Ken closed his eyes, no more pleased with the situation. "I think we kind of have to," he replied bitterly.

"Speaking of that..." Opening his eyes, the boy turned his head toward Yukari. "Do you remember ever falling asleep last night?"

She blinked, then slowly shook her head. "... No," Yukari answered, sounding unsure. "I remember being in the hallway upstairs, and then..." she trailed off, rattling her mind for anything else. "Nothing. Next thing I know I'm waking up in bed."

With raised eyebrows, she also turned her eyes towards him. "Do you?"

"No..." His voice trailed off as if Ken had found her answer exceedingly creepy. Which he did. "I basically remember the same thing. One minute, we were upstairs, and the next, I'm in bed. It was almost like a dream sequence." A nightmare, more specifically, but now was hardly the time to be picky about details.

Maybe we were that tired... It was the only plausible explanation he could think of.

Well, that was unsettling, to say the least. How did the both of them forget?

It was a question to be pondered, but considering her track record since arriving, Yukari was sure she wasn't going to be getting any solid answers. She wasn't getting any for anything else lately.

"We may as well go back," Yukari said tiredly, nodding her head in the direction of the east hall. "Probably shouldn't wait out here, even if there are others around; if another monster came by..." She didn't want to begin to think how screwed they would be. In a somewhat more sharp tone, she finished, "I think I've had enough near-death experiences for one day."

"Okay." It was a good idea, although Ken could not help but wince slightly at his teammate's tone. Yukari had very good reason to be upset; it was only their second day, and they were literally back to square one. With how that last event went, he almost felt as though their bad luck was somewhat his fault.

"Sorry about that," Ken muttered automatically. He then frowned, realizing how odd that might have sounded to Yukari. The boy almost followed through with an excuse or an explanation, but as he opened his mouth to do so, nothing came out. His mind went completely blank.

Embarrassed, Ken carefully got to his feet, shaking off his upper pant legs while doing so. Not that they needed dusting or anything.

With more effort than it should have normally taken, Yukari was able to push herself up to her feet as well. It wasn't even that great of a distance, but she was not looking forward to having to walk all the way back to the rooms.

This was also a great lesson in what it felt like to be on the opposite end of Akihiko-senpai's punches.

Yukari eyed him oddly at his apology; what was he sorry for? Then again, they both were sorry about something, weren't they?

"Don't be," she told him, for whatever reason it was. After a pause, and without much else to say, she started forward.
