[from hereRenji paused just long enough to open the door into the first M-block, then ran in, leaving it open behind him. He headed toward the last hallway

from hereItachi reached the cross-hallway he had become familiar with over the day. Previously he had only been led through the door at the end, to the left. He knew where that door led, but he did not know if that path would enable him to exit the building

Thursday was in a bit of a hurry, but that didn't prevent her from noticing the young man standing in the middle of the hallway. He looked...new, for lack of a better word.
Deciding she could take a few seconds to help him out, she walked up to him, careful to direct the beam of her torch away from his face.
"Sorry - I couldn't help but notice that you looked a bit lost. Do you need directions to someplace?"
Itachi turned slightly abstracted eyes on the woman addressing him. It seemed he would not have to make contact with anyone himself. He thought for a moment about whether it would be wise to expose his position to her, but he couldn't really afford to be concerned about that now.
"Yes. Is that door at the end of the hallway the only way out of this part of the building?" He paused for a moment, wondering if he should ask more. "I would also like to know how to find an exit from the building, if possible."
Thursday glanced back in the direction whence she'd come before nodding. "Yeah. As far as I know, there's no other way out of the M-block."
This guy really was new, wasn't he? Thursday half-turned, pointing through the open door and down the hall. "Keep going down that hall until you see a door leading to a foyer of sorts. The building's main entrance is there, but it's locked and nobody's ever been able to find the key or break it down. Personally, I'd recommend trying to find some other way out."
She wasn't in need of her maps tonight, and she was headed toward M23 anyway, so she dug out the copies Hitsugaya had given her last night and offered them to him. "These are incomplete maps of the first and second floors - they're the best we have at the moment." A pause. "I'm Thursday Next, by the way. Sorry about not introducing myself earlier."
Itachi stared at the woman. That level of generosity was. . . incomprehensible. It was not strategic to give that much help to a stranger. She was obviously foolish. But the maps? Those could be useful.
He reached out and took the maps, still staring blankly. Belatedly, he realised he should introduce himself in return. "I am Uchiha Itachi." He paused again, thinking. If she were so eager to help him, she could be a useful contact later. This entire business was turning out not to be so simple as Itachi had first believed, and he was beginning to doubt his chances of a quick, easy escape. Contacts might be necessary in the future. He should therefore be polite. ". . . thank you, Thursday-san."
Suddenly his attention was caught by something she had said. We? Were the other prisoners working together? That would make sense. They must have a decent level of organization, to distribute maps. "Excuse me, but who is 'we?'"
There really was a disproportionate number of Japanese people here. It was rather baffling, but it gave Thursday hope that one of them might know Nakajima-san. This, however, was neither the time nor the place to ask. "It isn't a problem - it's actually pretty easy to obtain maps in this place."
Apparently he hadn't heard about Arts and Crafts yet. "We're Arts and Crafts, a fairly large group of patients who've banded together to escape - you might have seen us mentioned on the bulletin board in the Sun Room. Getting out of here seems pretty difficult otherwise. If you're interested in joining us, you could leave a note on the bulletin board during the day."
For some reason, he didn't look like the sort who would want to join up, but it was hard to judge people in a place like this.
She really was too forthcoming. No matter. He'd been right; they'd organized. Arts and Crafts? The name was strange, though it was probably for secrecy reasons, especially if this bulletin board was public. Yet if it was so secret, why tell a perfect stranger

This guy was a little paranoid, wasn't he? Thursday raised an eyebrow, shaking her head slightly.
"Not in a place like this. I don't know where you come from or who you were before you came here, but here everyone has one common objective - escaping this hellhole. As daft as it sounds, we can only get out of here if we work together."
Thursday glanced toward the hall containing M23 and then looked back at Itachi. As nice as it would be to stay and chat, she didn't want to be late to the meeting. "Sorry, I'm in a bit of a rush tonight. I hope the map helps - good luck."
Nodding and flashing him a brief smile, she turned and headed down the hall.
That was a foolish notion. Perhaps they were all in the same unfavourable situation, but that was no reason to assume that no other prisoner could be your enemy. Itachi himself already knew that he had a deadly enemy among the prisoner population. And if it benefited him to betray the trust of another patient, there would be no reason not to. Therefore, Itachi could not assume that no other patient would do the same to him. Therefore, Itachi could not trust another patient. There was no chance to explain this to Thursday, however, as she had left

Takaya rounded the corner, pushing against his own mind to try and keep in control. He didn't need this shit. Not so early in the night. Maybe it was a good thing that he didn't have anyone to pal around with. It's not like he made friends easily.
He wondered what was outside. He hadn't been out there at night yet. He was so caught up in his own (and his) thoughts that he didn't notice the other guy with the papers until he was almost on top of him. He frowned.
"Dumbass. You shouldn't stay in one place too long."
Itachi flicked a disinterested glance up at the intruder. Preoccupied with the maps, which he was having trouble making out in the dark, he had no interest in conversation. Yet that comment was nonsensical. The advice was unsolicited, not to mention pointless.
"Why should I not do that?" Itachi stared nonplussed at the boy who had addressed him.
Takaya no longer needed his flashlight and as such did not have it, but he could tell that the guy was trying to read a map. In the dark. Moron.
"Because there's shit you can't see out here and you're a fucking target," he snapped, irritated by this guy's tone. About to stalk away, the cool touch to his mind stopped him.
"Where are you trying to go," he ground out, as though someone were forcing him to speak at knife point.
Itachi blinked at the boy's tone. Seeing no immediate cause for the other's anger, Itachi disregarded the tone and considered the offer of assistance

Takaya snorted. He must have been really new if he thought that would work. Hell, if it worked, it worked. It wouldn't, but at least it was something to do.
"Okay," he said with a frown. "I'll go with you." He turned. "Courtyard's this way." He didn't bother waiting.
