And so, when a while later Rinali opened the door and spoke his name, he startled for a moment before he caught his bearings. He'd expected the questions, expected to hear accusation and anger in her voice. What he heard now... he wasn't quite sure of yet.
He moved to get to his feet, but thought better of it, though he rose into a crouch, down on one knee. "I wanted to protect- that is... I didn't want you to-..." He still couldn't meet her eyes. "What I did... it's... it's not something I expect to be forgiven for. But... but I wanted you to know I'm sorry. I can't- I know how much it hurts to lose... especially when... when they're all you have. And to think that I-... caused it..." The words tasted bitter in his mouth, but he forced himself to keep going. He owed her that much. "I can never do enough to... make up for it."
He shook his head, pausing for a moment, as though trying to decide if he should go on. "I... I talked to a lot of people today. But... but the one thing they all agreed on... they said... that it might not have been him. I'm not trying to... to avoid responsibility," he said, his tone somber, "but I thought... that maybe... that it'd be alright to... to hope that it's true."

She wiped away another tear that began to fall. "I'm going to go back there." she said, trying to sound more resolved than she actually felt. "Are you coming?"

"I... b-but... you-" he wanted to tell her that it was too dangerous, that she should stay here and let him look or wait for one of the others, Ravi or Kanda. But he had no place to tell her what she should or shouldn't do. As long as he protected her, that was all that mattered. "Ah... y-yes. I'll go."

All that came out, however, was a softly spoken, "Thank you." He might not have even heard, so softly did she say it.
Biting the inside of her cheek gently, she resolved herself forward. By now she knew the path. She'd traversed it twice already.
