Nightshift 30: F21-F30 Hallway.

((taking place in room F25 specifically))Dinner had been alright. She had somehow avoided talking to anyone, which was both good and bad. The good part was, unless it had been someone she knew, she didn't have to talk to anyone. While she felt considerably better after meeting Rena, she couldn't stop her mind from going back to being strapped to ( Read more... )

He was exhausted. After last night and everything today, it was easy to just let his eyelids start to close. He tucked in his knees tightly to his chest. He would just rest his head for a moment, he told himself, not longer than a moment. He hadn't even noticed as Rhode pranced down the hall and right past him.

And so, when a while later Rinali opened the door and spoke his name, he startled for a moment before he caught his bearings. He'd expected the questions, expected to hear accusation and anger in her voice. What he heard now... he wasn't quite sure of yet.

He moved to get to his feet, but thought better of it, though he rose into a crouch, down on one knee. "I wanted to protect- that is... I didn't want you to-..." He still couldn't meet her eyes. "What I did... it's... it's not something I expect to be forgiven for. But... but I wanted you to know I'm sorry. I can't- I know how much it hurts to lose... especially when... when they're all you have. And to think that I-... caused it..." The words tasted bitter in his mouth, but he forced himself to keep going. He owed her that much. "I can never do enough to... make up for it."

He shook his head, pausing for a moment, as though trying to decide if he should go on. "I... I talked to a lot of people today. But... but the one thing they all agreed on... they said... that it might not have been him. I'm not trying to... to avoid responsibility," he said, his tone somber, "but I thought... that maybe... that it'd be alright to... to hope that it's true."

She wasn't ready to hear his apologies. She didn't want to even think about the fact that Allen was the one who had done it. "Don't," she said, holding back the pain in her chest that made her want to yell at him for no good reason. "Just Don't..."

She wiped away another tear that began to fall. "I'm going to go back there." she said, trying to sound more resolved than she actually felt. "Are you coming?"

He wasn't sure what else he could say, though Rinali seemed as though she didn't want to hear more. At least he'd said what he came to say, whether or not she believed it or even accepted any of his apology, he wasn't sure.

"I... b-but... you-" he wanted to tell her that it was too dangerous, that she should stay here and let him look or wait for one of the others, Ravi or Kanda. But he had no place to tell her what she should or shouldn't do. As long as he protected her, that was all that mattered. "Ah... y-yes. I'll go."

Her feelings regarding Allen were conflicted. In one sense, she was happy he was there for her, yet in another she felt disgusted and horrified in knowing that Allen might have killed her brother. She wanted to scream at him, or hug him, and shove him away just as she pulled him closer.

All that came out, however, was a softly spoken, "Thank you." He might not have even heard, so softly did she say it.

Biting the inside of her cheek gently, she resolved herself forward. By now she knew the path. She'd traversed it twice already.
