Day 30: Men's Showers (Third Shift)

Feb 17, 2008 23:46

The lockdown had been interesting. The fact that the staff had enough power to put down a rebellion that quickly and then lock people into their rooms just as fast was something of a feat to be admired. Their efficiency would have been much more impressive if Okita had been on the other side of it, however. As it stood, he had to keep his ( Read more... )

When it became obvious that the two large male nurses were not going to give Marcus any privacy while he showered he just shrugged and went about it. They were an irritating presence, but there was nothing he could really do about the situation.

It wasn't like he was shy, either, they were all men here, and Marcus had been in the army long enough to be rid of any problem showering around other men.

The most irritating part was that he wouldn't be able to speak freely with whoever he ended up talking to, if anyone was willing to brave the two orderlies that, while not more muscular than Marcus, were fairly close. They were also a couple inches taller than he was.

Recluse had managed to completely avoid all of the fighting in the cafeteria, keeping to a quiet corner and calmly finishing his breakfast while all hell broke loose.

He took a shower next to Marcus, hiding a smirk behind a faked irritated look. "You should have realized that it wasn't going to work." He completely ignored the orderlies, who were both smaller than he was. He wasn't going to be starting any fights, so he wasn't worried about sedation.

"I knew that it wasn't going to work," He just hadn't realized how badly they were going to be beaten. And he knew more about their defenses and had a better estimate of the number of staff they had here.

Marcus glanced up at Stefan, too drugged to be irritated at being scolded. He found the entire situation to be funny, and at the same time far too nostalgic for his tastes.

That was something Stefan would have said, not Recluse. Recluse would have been amused and smirking at him. This isn't the Stefan that I knew, though.

Recluse gave him an incredulous look. "Then why'd you do it? You could have just stayed out of the fight." He had to bite back the urge to say something sarcastic or belittling. It was just too easy. It was always too easy to find something unkind to say about Marcus.

"It was better than just sitting around or going for cover," There was a chance that someone might have escaped in the chaos, he saw several patients fleeing.

It wasn't like he could tell Stefan what he really thought while they had two male nurses hovering around them. And Stefan should have realized why he did it, it was a pointless question to ask.

At least now he knew that the staff had some kind of sedative gas, though he hadn't seen how they dispensed it, and it had only effected patients that were fighting.

"Possibly, but I got a much better look at how things were going from outside the brawl." There wasn't any chance that the riot would succeed, so why bother? "And it also meant I didn't get sedated. You really didn't think that one through at all, Marcus."

"I remember a time when you would have been right in the middle of the brawl," Marcus said, giving Stefan an irritated look. Recluse really was nothing like the Stefan he had once known, the man who had always favored direct action, who had thought that Marcus was too cautious.

"The cops in Paris didn't carry sedatives. And back then, we actually had the getaway taxis." Back then, they were going to get arrested if they didn't fight. Here, they were already imprisoned. "And whether you want to acknowledge it or not, I've always been able to judge the odds of success with something like that." Obviously much better than you can.

Marcus was not convinced at that line of reasoning. "You were always the one to say that I was too cautious." And in this situation they really hadn't had much to lose. The night shift was the only time where freedom and a clear mind were important.

Of course, he had yet to see if there would be a worse punishment awaiting him at night. "You aren't the man you used to be." It was unnerving the way Stefan seemed to want to be his old self.

Recluse ignored the first statement. Nothing he said there would help him at all.

"Of course I'm not. It's not as if a few months of being stuck here is going to make me revert to exactly the way I was 77 years ago." He was glad Marcus still didn't know that he'd actually been here for only just over a week. That made all of this so much easier.

This was going nowhere, and Marcus was tired of having this conversation for the moment so he decided to start washing his hair instead. "You should actually shower instead of just standing there talking."

Recluse gave Marcus an irritated look, but started working on washing himself off. Anything he could say right now would take things a step backwards in his efforts to delude Marcus into thinking he was an ally.
