Day 30: Staff, Morning

Feb 14, 2008 03:14

Burly orderlies and agile Calm Effect nurses flooded the cafeteria from the Courtyard while regular hall nurses filed in from the Sun Room and ushered out those not involved in the rebellion. It indeed seemed as if Landel was sending out all the cavalry, and an effective cavalry they were: The riot didn't continue for much longer after the alarm ( Read more... )

As the nurses arrived for Cid and Sai, the ninja had offered them the usual fake smile and gone along without any arguing. He'd rather expected this sort of outcome, and was not at all surprised that all the rioters he'd seen had been brought down. As his own nurse met him in the hall, he heard her mutter to one of the other staff members nearby "See? I told you he stays out of trouble. You owe me ten dollars."

And then he was left to ponder exactly what they were talking about, sitting quietly on the edge of his bed. There was no way to know how long they'd be there, and he could certainly use the shower he was sure they had planned for that day...

Kurikara was slow to wake. He was vaguely aware of the nurses wheeling him around and being moved off one thing and onto another. When he did stir, he thought the drugs must be a lot stronger than the last batch because his arms and legs wouldn't move despite his struggling.

It took him a lot longer than he would have liked to realize he was restrained. Kurikara didn't struggle much more. He needed all of his energy to string one coherent thought after the other.

The fighting, Hiei, the weakness...before or after the drugs? He couldn't be sure if he was just imagining it, and soon enough he forgot why it was even important. Kurikara forced his eye open and looked down at the restraint, silent for once with his thoughts.

"Ah... Are you awake, Kurikara-san?" Sai spoke gently, unsure of how strongly his roommate would be under at this point. He was even less surprised that the supposed dragon was one of the many patients to be sedated. He half surmised that Kurikara went looking for fights on a regular basis despite the usual outcome.

He rose from the bed, wincing only slightly from the pain this caused the bruising on his chest as he did so, and walked slowly to his roommate's side. The restraints seemed firmly in place. From his first glance he could see no weaknesses in them to make use of. Then again, removing the straps would only get them in further trouble, and it wouldn't do either of them any good if Sai ended up tied down as well.

Kurikara tensed at the other voice, his instincts too blurred by the drugs to understand it at first. It was familiar though, and obvious enough that he relaxed again moments later and focused on his roommate instead.

"Aw..Awake." He managed, his voice roughed by the drugs and natural inflection. "A'think. Lots of'drugs."

The kid's name was..ok, the important thing was that he knew it and he'd just misplaced the information. There was a more important thought tugging at his mind. He was supposed to remember something he had to do, hadn't done. It took him several moments before he could form the thoughts and find usable words.

"Las' night.." He started, but the situation was too complicated to explain or remember well in his state. "Stuff didn't happen. Your thing's under the..the..mattress." Kurikara let out a sigh, but he didn't know himself if it was relief or utter frustration. "Drug sucks."

By 'things' Sai assumed Kurikara meant his trowels. With the way the other boy was currently fastened down to said mattress, however, the ninja decided to wait until later to retrieve them. They might take a while to get free, and who knew when the nurses would get back?

At the dragon's last comment, Sai gave him a smile. "That's why you should avoid being drugged, Kurikara-san. I won't undo the restraints - I don't even know if I can - but is there anything else I can do for you?"

He had to applaud himself for understanding the boy's words without much delay. As long as he didn't try to do two things at a time - like interrupt or think - he could manage well enough. He gave the restraints another slow tug. They didn't stretch him any and they weren't particularly painful, just uncomfortable. The way he saw things, this wasn't so different from every day spent in the institute.

A more obvious prison, yes, but not significantly different. He gave a little shrug, uncaring.

"Hey." Kurikara shot, which was as much as he could manage in defense. "'s nature. Sword's got to cut. I can't.." The thought was lost before he finished it. Kurikara shifted his gaze back to the ceiling, willing himself to be patient. "'Sokay. Talk. Scold. 'M bored."

Bored? His roommate must get bored easily, Sai figured, as he'd just woken and was already complaining about it. Perhaps that was why he got into fights so often?

One more check over the restraints revealed a probably lost cause with the ninja's current strength and equipment even if he had decided to try and undo them. But Kurikara didn't seem too upset, which was good, and Sai attempted conversation at the dragon's request.

"What did you do last night?" He asked. The other boy had claimed nothing happened, but he'd definitely left the room and headed somewhere. It was as good a topic as any.

Remembering was hard when thoughts kept slipping in and out of focus.

"Fail. A lot." He replied finally, the words coming out slightly slurred. "'M a crap teacher. He used too much strength and I didn' explain anythin. Night finished before..." He started to shrug and realized he really couldn't. A little growl escaped his throat. "Nothin done."

"You?"

"Trial and error, then," Sai said. It was the most positive thing he could think of to say right off the bat. "Perhaps you'll both do better with more practice." Time was valuable, obviously, but teaching required a good amount of it.

As for himself, "Two companions and I ventured upstairs to retrieve some supplies. We encountered one of the Institute's creatures, but were successful in bringing the items back. My friend is something of a craftsman, so he's been left in charge of them."
