Mason stepped into the kitchen, hoping to find a convenient stack of waffles lying around. Or at least a better weapon than his empty whiskey bottle. But nothing really leapt out at him.
... Hopefully nothing was going to literally leap out at him. Mason gulped. He really didn't want to run into any monster-type things

The second the door opened into the kitchen, a fight became apparent. Kimbley paused for half a second as something became clear, fighting a patient, and then his eyes immediately scanned the area for anything that looked like a trap door, or a staircase. Some way down. They were in the kitchen, that much was obvious.
But he didn't see anything. He frowned briefly, shifting away from the door and away from the fight, and glanced toward the three doors on the far side of the room. Maybe one of those was hiding a stairwell.
The telepath would probably know.

That was painfully obvious enough. Dairine itched to get into the fight, but she knew that her size would likely be a disadvantage in a frontal assault. She was currently weaponless, too, except for her flashlight. And to be honest, it made a better torch than a club, durable though it was.
Luckily for her group, the thing that was being fought seemed too focused on its current quarry to notice them. Her eyes darted around the kitchen. She'd never fought with a knife before, but it couldn't be too hard, could it?
Right, first order of business was to get a knife. That is, if she could evade the notice of that creature long enough to do so, anyway.

Without a weapon, however, any fight of the sort would go badly wrong. But they were in a kitchen, and if he could get his hands on a blade, he would be set. He backed into the shadows, assessing the situation, thinking about where he would most likely find a knife....
And if Akabane couldn't find one, he could always improvise.

One door was already opened, while the other two were firmly shut. Just because a door was open didn't mean it hadn't been searched. He gave Schuldig one last glance before slipping toward the open door in the center of the back wall, being careful to avoid any vestiges of the fight on the other side of the room.

She scanned the kitchen quickly, opening and closing a few of the cabinets and drawers while trying to keep away from the fight. Aha, what was this? Not a knife, but it would do.
Dairine drew a large frying pan out of one of the cabinets and held it like she would a baseball bat, a determined expression on her face. Nothing like the delicate subtlety of wizardry, but sometimes blunter means were called for.
"Right, I'm set," she said, turning back to Schuldig and Kimbley.

A faint smile crossed his face. While they weren't scalpels or knives, cake cutters were sharp, and would be a suitable alternative for the blades he lacked, for a while at least.
The Jackal turned to face the battle, considering whether to join in or to go with his current group into this mysterious basement. It seemed that the monster was being held by one man, and if Kuroudo Akabane was going to fight anything, he wanted it to be a challenge. This beast looked like it could be finished off by a few well-placed slashes.
After another moment, Akabane turned to follow Kimbley. "I trust this will be interesting, then? Because I will be distinctly disappointed if this excursion fails to provide any

But then his mental ears pricked up as he suddenly caught some thoughts pertinent to their situation, and he grinned. Some days, in spite of everything, it was good to be a telepath. And his companions were going to learn that it was good to be allies with a telepath ( ... )
