Nightshift 29: M41-50 Hallway

Renji quickly got dressed once he finished his dinner, gathering his normal supplies and making a makeshift sheathe for his sword from the bedsheets. He also left the few maps he'd had a chance to make - four of them - on his desk, labeled with who should get them if they remembered to stop by: Aoyagi R, Yagami Light, Kudoh Yoji, and one unlabeled ( Read more... )

Qui-Gon puzzled over the intercom post. Martin Landel, it seemed, was either away (ominous in itself) or otherwise preoccupied. With what remained to be seen. Yet another question without an answer, he thought, setting about his room and gathering up what he would need to begin exploring Landels again. The Earthian flashlight's bulkiness took some getting used to, after being used to the lightweight glowrods, and he still had no idea how much power was in the device. Hard to tell with Earth's level of technology.

Shrugging one of the patient-coats over his shoulders, Qui-Gon opened his door and stepped outside. As was becoming a custom for him here in Landels, Qui-Gon closed his eyes for a brief moment and took a deep breath to center himself, stretching out with the Force to see what he could clean from it. Much of it was the same as before. Despair. Anger. Fear. Dark emotions that created tremors through the Force, rippling down at him even with his weakened abilities.

To be honest, Obi-Wan hadn't known what it was he was going to do tonight. It was unusual for him -- he usually liked to have at least some idea of what his plans were. But dinner had lasted a shorter time than he'd anticipated, and it hadn't given him much time to do much preparation ( ... )

Qui-Gon sensed Obi-Wan coming a few minutes before he actually saw him. It seemed these days that of every patient here, his bond with Obi-Wan was the strongest, and his sense of where he was in the Force felt to him particularly strong after the Knighting ceremony. Or what probably had to be the most unorthodox Knighting in the history of the Order for quite some time. Qui-Gon matched his friend's relief in the Force with relief of his own.

"No, I didn't," Qui-Gon said. He wasn't sure yet if that was a good thing or not, but he had gotten some more reading in. "What about you?"

The last time they had a visitor, it had been a young boy that Obi-Wan said was the spitting image of Anakin. Qui-Gon believed that it was possible Anakin had been already taken and wondered what he was up to now.

Obi-Wan shook his head. "Not this time, no." He wasn't really sure if that was a good thing or bad thing, either. The Jedi was certain that the boy who'd visited him last week was Anakin Skywalker. He hated to think that Martin Landel had taken him and altered his memories, but right now, that possibility seemed very real.

"Did you have any particular plans for tonight?" he asked after a moment. They'd never really had a chance to discuss it, though he imagined it wouldn't take them long to settle on something and go for it.

Qui-Gon glanced down the hall. "I think I need to take a look at the doctor files," he said quietly. "See if I can find any information on Anakin or us. It shouldn't take long."

The doctor's offices weren't that far, if he remembered correctly: a little bit past the double-doors of the Sun Room and then a left would take him to the row of offices. There was no guarantee that he would find anything useful, but he had to take a look and see what his search came up with. They would have to better understand their own situation if they were going to help the others. If they were going to help Anakin.

Obi-Wan nodded. That actually didn't sound like a bad idea at all. He realized that he knew very little on what the institute's records said about either of them. "My doctor's office is the third one to the right, once you enter that hallway," he told him.

He paused, frowning to himself a little. "Do you suppose it would be better for us to split up for the night? We both have a decent grasp of the building's layout, after all." Not to mention they were both fully trained Jedi who were capable of working under all sorts of circumstances. "While you're looking for files, I could try to find better weapons for us. Then perhaps we could go to the basement in the near future."

That would work. They could cover more ground and get more accomplished.

"Alright then," Qui-Gon said. "Perhaps when we're finished for the night, we can report back in the patient halls."

And after that, if they had time, there was also the matter of the Earthian electronics here. The problem was they still didn't know what parts did what - he would have to try to press for more information on the bulletin board and see what he could come up with.

Obi-Wan nodded. That sounded like a reasonable plan. "And if for some reason we don't meet up tonight, let's immediately post to the bulletin in the morning with an update of our current status, and then we can meet in person to give more detailed accounts of what we found."

The younger Jedi gazed seriously at his friend. "Let's both be careful not to take any unnecessary risks. May the Force be with you."

Reaching out, Qui-Gon laid a hand on Obi-Wan's shoulder and offered up a small smile. "Maybe it be with you as well," he said quietly. "I'll see you in the morning."

Qui-Gon couldn't quite place his finger on it, but he had the feeling that the Force would be with Obi-Wan, even beyond Landels, beyond Earth. Despite the dangers they faced every night in this strange prison, he believed Obi-Wan would have a larger part to play, would have some great hand in the future. The Force, even if their connection to it now was weak, still had much in store for Obi-Wan. As Qui-Gon walked off into the darkness, he glanced at Obi-Wan over his shoulder.

He saw a young man, holding himself older than his years, and ready.

Obi-Wan watched Qui-Gon go with a gentle smile. He was certain his former Master would be well tonight, because he had the utmost faith in him when it came down to it. This would be their first night working separately (not counting that night Qui-Gon had decided to help other patients without his knoweldge), and he hoped it would be a productive one ( ... )
