Day 29: Men's Showers (2nd Shift)

Jan 13, 2008 02:08

It took some convincing for the nurses to let him head to the showers, and he knew that he'd be watched. That was what he got for losing his temper, yet somehow he still didn't regret punching the previous nurse. Renji stayed silent as they moved through the halls, though, concentrating on walking in a relatively straight line ( Read more... )

Daemon Had faltered when asked on where he wanted to go next. He didn't know, couldn't decide, and he was feeling claustrophobic all of a sudden. Too many thoughts, too many people, so he requested something different than the options given, just to see if they'd agree.

After last night, he hoped they'd feel they owed him that, at least. Not that any of the ones here today realized that.

So when he quietly requested a shower - desperately craving some privacy and a span of time to relax and unwind beneath the flow of hot water - his nurse gave him a long look, then reluctantly agreed.

However, apparently fate was still enjoying tormenting him today, because once he'd shed his clothing in the outer room and stepped into the showers, he realized he wasn't the only one who had thought to escape here. A quiet, regretful laugh slipped past his lips before he could stop it, as he paused and stared at the redhead across the room.

Renji. Of course.

It took Renji far longer than it should have to notice that he was no longer alone, probably a combination of drugs and pain clouding his senses. And the person felt familiar, though he didn't comprehend that at first because he simply didn't want to.

He slowly turned his head to look over his shoulder. Water streamed down his face; his eyes were partly covered by his own hair. But he could see well enough. He could see Daemon. He turned back to face the wall, hands squeezing a little tighter.

For all the teasing he'd handed Artemis about social bathing, Renji really had wanted to be alone. And if not alone, the last person he wanted to be around, naked, right now was Daemon. All that kept him from running away was pride, and the hope that maybe Daemon would want to avoid him just as much.

He rested his forehead against the wall. There was no way, at this point, for his day to get worse.

Daemon debated leaving again, giving the man his privacy, finding his own privacy, but he had no desire to go back out there and try to coerce his nurse into granting him something else. So, instead, he turned and picked a showerhead several spaces down from Renji, following the other man's lead for the moment of just pretending he was actually alone, although he couldn't help but cast a few sideways glances at the shinigami from the corner of his eye, wanting to make sure the redhead was alright - after last night and hos bout with the nurses today ( ... )

So much for his hope that Daemon would want to avoid him, would leave. Renji thought that maybe he should start washing his hair or something, work on getting the hell out of here if Daemon was going to be around, but he felt oddly paralyzed. He didn't know what he should do; he was angry, hurt, and sickened, but he also knew that it was unfair to blame the man, and it wasn't a conflict he could resolve right now.

He pressed his forehead harder against the wall, which hurt. He hoped it would help clear his head, but really, he just had a vague headache on top of everything else.
