Day 29: Cafeteria (2nd Shift)

Jan 11, 2008 14:42

Nathan had never actually been in a nuthouse before and had only recently contemplated checking himself into one in a fit of sarcastic, self-depricating humor as of late. It was safe to say that he wasn't terribly familiar with the typical layout, even though he guessed it wasn't too hard to assume in this case. Everything was clean and painfully ( Read more... )

With Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes tucked under his arm, Qui-Gon entered the cafeteria, intending to get something quick to eat before returning back to his research. So far it hadn't produced anything very substantial, but he would simply have to keep looking. Perhaps this Earthian Holmes might be able to give him some answers, although he very much doubted he would get something as specific as telling him just what would be able to make a commlink here.

Balancing a tray in one hand, the Jedi Master made his way to an empty table, and took a seat. He spread out the Memoir before him...

Luffy didn't know why the Cat Lady had dragged Zoro off so suddenly, but he didn't worry too much. Swords or not, he was still a really tough guy. He'd be able to handle whatever it was the bastards here were going to throw at him ( ... )

Qui-Gon looked up at his new table-mate, a young teenager who seemed to have no issues with personal space and was leaning eagerly to peek at the memoirs in his hands. The young man was so earnest and up front that Qui-Gon smiled.

"I was allowed to borrow it from the library here," Qui-Gon said. "It's an interesting read, from what I can tell of it so far."

He was still unsure of if it was fictional or not yet. But maybe this young man would be able to shed some light on the issue; he certainly seemed friendly enough, and had no problems with smiling. Qui-Gon's command of the Force was strong enough that he could sense a strong, almost piercing sureness emanating from him, a feeling that he hadn't felt in awhile, especially here in Landels.

He dipped his head slightly in a nod. "My name's Qui-Gon."

"Oh, I get it!" Luffy replied brightly. "That was pretty nice of them, since it's not like you can bring food into the library!" Not that Luffy really had much of a reason to bring food into the library, except that maybe it was a convenient place to take a nap, and he liked the idea of toting extra snacks with him wherever he went.

"I don't know much about books," he admitted after scratching his cheek. "My friend Robin knows more than I do about that stuff, but she isn't here." The pirate took a closer look at the memoirs. It didn't look like anything he'd seen before, but, then, that wasn't saying much since it wasn't like he'd read many books.

"Qui-Gon," Luffy echoed slowly, as if he were giving the name a sort of test run. It was a really weird name, but still pretty cool! Grinning, he jerked a thumb into his own chest. "I'm Luffy! Nice to meet you ( ... )

Qui-Gon somehow doubted that he would be getting much, if any, reading done with Luffy here. Not that he minded. Meeting the other patients was important even if it didn't yield the same results, and Luffy's wide-eyed enthusiasm was rather refreshing, rather like stepping from a dusty room into a wide open space.

He smiled at Luffy. "I'm from Coruscant," he said. He didn't expect Luffy to know - almost all the patients he'd met in Landels hadn't ever heard of the Republic, much less Coruscant. "And what about you?"

"Coruscant, huh?" Luffy leaned back in his chair, looking thoughtful now. Nope, he was pretty sure he hadn't heard of it. "Never heard of it. Is it on the ocean, or in the stars?"

He laughed a little, stuffing more food into his mouth. "Me and my friends were out sailing on the Grand Line before we woke up here. It's this really dangerous part of the ocean. My world doesn't really have a name, though. Just a bunch of tiny places inside it."

The pirate curiously tilted his head. "Are there any other people from Coruscant here?"

For an Earthian, Luffy seemed surprisingly accepting - the Earthians he'd met so far seemed to be unable to believe in life beyond their own planet, much less the idea that there were countless civilizations. Qui-Gon nodded ( ... )

Another galaxy. Luffy had never heard of anyone talk about things in terms of galaxies before, but they sounded pretty big! Maybe space was a giant ocean, and galaxies were smaller seas, and planets were like islands? It was a pretty simple way to look at it, but it made things easier to understand, so Luffy didn't really care.

He just wondered what kind of ship you'd need to sail that far.

"That sounds really interesting!" he said with a laugh. "I mean, I've been up to the clouds before, but I didn't know there were people beyond even there!" Had Gold Roger visited space before? It was fun to think about!

"Are you a teacher, then?" Luffy asked when Qui-Gon mentioned a student. "Or maybe you run a kind of dojo?"

He scratched his cheek, thinking a little. "And, yeah, I have a bunch of my crew with me! Actually, my friend Zoro was with me when I first got here, and then he disappeared along with Sanji, and then they both came back not that long ago. But they don't remember their first time being here. It's pretty weird, ( ... )

Rather than getting offended, even somehow threatened that there was life amongst the stars, like some of the Earthians, Luffy seemed content merely to be excited, even intrigued by something different. Qui-Gon had to smile at his enthusiasm. It seemed that being imprisoned and held without any kind of explanation didn't faze this young man ( ... )

"Ohhh, I get it!" Luffy said with a nod. The idea of an apprenticeship wasn't so weird to him. It wasn't unusual for pirates to take on apprentices of sorts to work as cabin boys or something, and most jobs back home usually called for that kind of thing. "You must have been pretty happy, huh?" It didn't occur to him that it might have been bittersweet or sad -- after all, a job well done was something to feel good about, right?

"Is it really so strange?" the pirate asked when Qui-Gon commented how unusual it was. "I guess it might be. I mean, I was by myself for a long time, too, which was even weirder for me. But now that we're together, I'm sure we'll be able to find a way out of here!" He laughed. "I can't lie, or make maps, or use swords, or cook, so teaming up is really the only way to go." It still sucked they were all there in the first, but there wasn't much they could do about that except find a way out, right?
