Day 29: Rec Field (2nd Shift)

Jan 11, 2008 13:17

[OOC: Waiting for Kenren, I think...? Daddy!?!]It was the second time she'd needed to be sedated since being dumped in this awful place. The fight hadn't even really been a fight either, just a refusal to move or do anything that the nurses wanted her to do after "Tyki" had left. It was just the adamant resistance that had gotten her injected and ( Read more... )

[Please, bother him if you wish! :) He probably won't be very nice, though. ^^;]

The hard part was leaving Omi. Aya would have rather stayed with the boy, but it was the only chance to get out before the nightshift and he desperately needed some fresh air to dust out some thoughts from his overworked mind.

He stayed quiet as the nurse chattered this and that the whole way outside, following her with bowed head and quiet grunt when she asked something. He tried not to think about the letter, or what Omi had said, and even more so the fact that Sena had been alive.

It just couldn't be true.

Outside he requested an baseball bat from the nurse who had escorted him and headed to the farthest corner of the field with it. He moved through the various katas slowly, describing every motion with meticulous care. It was the closest of meditation he could think of, mind of no mind. The bat was not the same weight or texture as his sword, or even a practice sword, but it didn't matter, as long as he had something in his hands it didn't feel as ridiculous as it might have seemed like.

His injuries made some movements stiff. He couldn't lift his left arm after just few stances more than shoulder height because of the vicious pain that throbbed through the newly acquired shoulder wound with every elaborated movement. But the familiarity of the act allowed him a moment of peace, which was far more precious than the lack of pain would have been.

After just standing around in the courtyard, Marcus wanted to actually do something. Being outside was nice, and while it wasn't quite the same as flying, running laps around the rec field would have to do.

As he approached the far corner of the field he slowed down, watching someone practicing a martial art with a baseball bat. His movements were stiff, and while the guy looked like he knew what he was doing it was also very clear he was injured.

If Aya was aware of someone observing his routine, he did not give any indication of it. One stance after another, slipping from one to another without paying any mind neither to the motion or his thoughts.

He spun around several times, his gaze connecting with someone watching him, and slipping past without recognition. Thrust, then a sweeping swing, which took him facing the other direction again.

It was a miracle his side didn't bother him more than it did. Tonight he'd have to unwrap some bandages to find out... Tonight? The thought made him falter a little, just a tremor in the smoothness of his motions.

What about tonight? The thought carried through several stances, a frown furrowing his brows now.

Statesman came to a complete stop to watch the man wielding the baseball bat. He certainly looked skilled, despite his injuries.

Maybe he would be able to get this guy as an ally. Marcus did want to get on with his run, but he also wasn't going to pass up an opportunity like this.

It wasn't like he needed to work out, either. Ever since he'd drank from the fountain of Zeus he'd noticed that his body did an excellent job of maintaining itself.

Years of practice in maintaining his calm when he needed it would have made it easy for Aya to ignore completely the person stopping nearby to stare at him. There was no mind in his movements, he did not feel self-conscious. No fear, he had a weapon handy and just enough distance to choose his approach. The assassin in him assured there was nothing to be worried about. And yet it didn't please him to have someone's eyes on him, even if just gathering information.

"What do you want?" he asked just loudly enough for his voice to carry to the other man. He didn't pause for a moment, sliding down to low stance and thrust forward with his bat.

"Just watching, and I'd like to know if you have something more appropriate that you use at night, or if you're stuck with a bat," Statesman really didn't like doing recruiting, but sometimes it was necessary.

This was one of those times, as long as he made sure he didn't arm the wrong people, other 'patients' here with weapons were more likely to survive if they knew how to use them. That also meant the people they were with would be more likely to survive.

Paranoia was seriously such a nasty habit. And it would rouse Aya's suspicions every time someone approached him without a proper reason, wanting something out of him. And every time he'd assume that there was some sort of hidden agenda, which virtually meant the same thing, wanting something out of him. But instead of just stating the desire, and having a simple answer to it, they'd dance around each other and see if there was a weak spot to exploit.

Well, fuck it. Aya wasn't cut out for that.

"What is it to you?" he asked shortly as he slid into another stance. His glance this time lingered a little longer on the stranger, making sure he'd remember if they'd meet again.

"We're all on the same side, here. We should be, anyway. You seem to know what you're doing, the more competent people out there who are going after Landel and killing monsters, the fewer patients who are going to die," It was just a lot harder to tell who was really on the appropriate side in this place.

So far this looked like it wouldn't be a productive conversation, but Marcus couldn't be sure yet.

"Hn." Aya finished his kata with a swift sweep across the imagined opponents middle, and let the momentum of the motion carry him up to an easier stance. He forgot the last proportion of the kata meant for sheathing his weapon because it was just a bit too ridiculous for him to go through it with a baseball bat.

With a tilt of his head, he regarded the stranger, the bat balanced on his good shoulder. "I don't know about that," he finally said somewhat coldly. It wasn't as if he didn't care, more just that he didn't see any point in random violence. "In this chaos it's difficult to know what will bring down the amount of casualties. The hell that breaks loose every night is not exactly what I'd call an endless resource for altruism."

[sorry for double post. .__. Me and my million mistakes.]

"Would you really turn away from another person being attacked here who needed help?" Most people didn't usually feel particularly heroic, but there were some situations that made it hard not to help.

Marcus knew just how close he himself had come to turning out like Recluse, and the world did not need more than one arch-villian incarnate. In fact, one was still one too many, but now was not the time to deal with that.

"Uh..." Aya was a bit taken back by the man's assumptions, or perhaps it was an attempt of provocation? His brows arched as he took a moment before replying.

"That wasn't quite what I meant to say," he begun slowly. "Just acknowledging a general fact. A friendly advice," even if he hardly sounded friendly, more cautious than anything else. "Some people here wouldn't even known what benevolence means. If it were possible to crawl out of this building by climbing on a pile of corpses, someone, or several of them, wouldn't have any qualms about using such a method."

"I know that," Marcus was vaguely insulted at the implication that he needed that kind of advice. "I've spent the past seven decades fighting against people like that where I'm from."

That might be hard for this guy to believe, but this place was very strange, and Statesman had already met a man that was a little older than himself.

"That's why it's even more important for the people who aren't like that to help one another out." Statesman wasn't sure exactly where this guy stood.

Aya shrugged. It had sounded like that to him. Or the guy assumed everyone with some battle readiness were fighting for a good cause, which Aya easily would have regarded as stupidity.

"Hmmph." He nodded in agreement to the second statement, however. The first one he found pointless to answer. "I've been under the impression that there's an organization that's working towards a goal similar to yours. It's been all over the bulletin board." Aya's experience with the kid in lead of it was not a positive one. But some people actually liked having someone tell them what to do. Aya hated patronizing.

"A lot of people don't like being part of a group or being ordered around even if they're on the same time," Statesman did like to give orders, but he recognized that not everyone that was on his side would listen to him.

He didn't like the thought of arming such 'independent agents', but he would if it would help get everyone out of here faster.

"But it will help if people at least coordinate with each other." He didn't think the organization over the board was exactly like his, but Statesman didn't feel like getting into an argument like that or explaining the finer details.

That got a slightly more good natured "Hn" out of Aya. He regarded the stranger for a moment quietly, weighting his next words carefully.

"Well, you're aim's not on mark here. I do not have anything sharper than the bat here to keep me company during nights." He shrugged again slightly, fully expecting the man's interest to end right there.

"I might be able to get you one, if you think you can use it responsibly," Statesman wasn't just going to provide him with a weapon, though, he would have to prove that he was the kind of person Statesman wanted to give a weapon to.

He would also have to convince Recluse to actually make it.
