DAY 29: WAITING ROOM/LOBBY 2 (2nd shift)

Jan 11, 2008 10:32

Yuuhi was probably one of the few people to arrive in the waiting room who wasn't surprised to have a visitor.  It had to happen sooner or later, they always found one another in whatever new world they arrived in.  Sometimes it took longer than others, minutes, hours, weeks, even months, but it was almost inevitable (Hitsuzen as Yuuko-han might ( Read more... )

Valyn was confused - moreso than usual - when one of the humans had taken his arm and gently led him into the building. 'Aubrey' had a visitor. She seemed quite cheerful about this, whereas Valyn was simply perplexed.

He'd gathered from the notice board that these 'visitors' appeared as people that were close to them. The only people close to him were already in the institute. Who else was there? Old Denelor? Zed, perhaps? It generally seemed to be family members - was he going to be confronted with a parody of his twin brother?

He considered it an irritation more than anything else. He was still curious about the man he'd been speaking to in the Courtyard. But he had little choice as he was gestured to a strange looking chair in a room where other patients were waiting. He sat with his hands folded in his lap, training kicking in. It was a touch like waiting outside his father's office for an audience - not a pleasant thought.

Shana had left the Game Room with reluctance, having been enjoying her time with the strange girl and her strange little game, but her nurse was insistent that someone was here to see her. A bewildering predicament, as she had no ide who could possibly be here to see her when no one in this world should know she existed.

She was even more bewildered when she was ushered into a little room and nudged towards Valyn. She went willingly enough, then, moving to his side and sinking down into the empty chair beside him with a wary sideways glance.

"Valyn?" she murmured quietly, for his ears alone. "What's going on?"

"Shana?" Now Valyn was even more perplexed. "It's visiting day. I've never gone through it before, but I've read the notes on it. They try and trick us with... I'm honestly not sure." He shook his head, apologetically.

"Some people claim they use look-alikes of people we know - illusions, most likely - and others swear it is people we know, who were broken by this place and believe their lies. I honestly don't know what I believe."

It was possible to completely rewrite a person's mind, but it only took a short time. He didn't think these people were using the magic he was familiar with to accomplish their goals.

"Well, I suppose we'll find out soon enough," she replied doubtfully, glancing around the room at the other patients worriedly. "It's not as if we're from here, so it can't really be anyone any of us know. Right?"

She could hope, anyway. She wasn't sure who they would send to visit her anyway. Everyone important to her was already here.

"I don't know." Valyn sighed, his expression more closed off than it had been in days. Part of it had to do with Shana - he'd hoped to avoid her today - and part to do with this entire visitor charade.

He didn't like when this place surprised him.

"I hate to put forth the idea, but it is possible if we were taken, others were as well. Though I can't possibly imagine who would be coming to visit us anyway."

She bit her lip and glanced down, feeling like something was wrong between them now, but not knowing how to brin it up. She wondered if she really had said or done things that had made him... change his mind about her, last night when she'd been drugged. She wished she could remember more of the details, but it had all been drowned out by the fuzzy warmth of sleeping in his arms.

Then again, with Valyn, maybe that was it in itself.

She sighed softly and shrugged, trying to push away the nagging feeling of unease. "It's possible, but you're right. I mean, the four of us are here already. Who could it be? Delenor? Alara? I have no idea who they could throw at us. And why us? Why not Keman and Shadow, too?"

"I had considered Denelor as a possibility," Valyn said, nodding. "I don't know if you noticed, but he and I...spoke. Somewhat regularly, while I was in the Citadel. He was...kind to me." Fatherly, in a way. Valyn supposed he could consider their relationship close. And that was a good question. Why not Shadow and Keman? Why them?

"I don't understand what they're doing or why. And it upsets me. And you should be resting, with your injury, not trotted out to be subjected to this foolishness."

"Really?" Shana blinked at him, looking vaguely surprised. She hadn't noticed, but then again, the last few days they'd spent in the Citadel together had been a blur of frantic activity, and she figured she'd missed a lot that didn't directly involve the dragons, the elves, and the wizard's immediate survival.

Then her gaze narrowed slightly and she frowned. "It's not that bad," she lied, though her bandaged hip did bother her whenever she had to put her weight on it. "I rested enough last night."

Then she blushed, the reminder of last night more than enough to send heat flooding into her cheeks.

"Yes, really." And that was all Valyn had to say on the subject. He wasn't in the mood to open up even a touch right now.

"Injuries like that don't heal overnight, Shana. You should be resting. You're lucky you can even walk. And...don't go outside at night. You'll only be attacked and again - and those creatures are worse than anything inside the walls."

"I told Keman I'd stay with him tonight anyway. I think he's testing his magic. It'd probably be a smart thing to do myself," she replied, glancing away. "Oh, did he tell you about the jewels we were given in town?"

"Not while you're injured," Valyn pointed out. "And no, he didn't. Keman and I haven't spoken much since we fought yesterday, I'm afraid. We apologized to one another, but we haven't had a chance to speak beyond that. You found something useful in town?"

And why hadn't Shana said anything? She'd had plenty of opportunity to mention it - they'd returned to the caravans together.

"When I..." she trailed off, averting her gaze. "When we separated earlier in the day, I found a shop that had all these used items that a very nice woman was selling. She gave both Keman and I something she referred to as a geode, but it has all these tiny crystals in it, more than enough to store several day's worth of power normally. She seemed to find it worthless, and maybe to her it was, but Keman and I thought it might help here immensely."

In light of everything that he'd told her about yesterday, she'd completely forgotten about it until she woke up with it still clutched in her hand this morning, when she awoke in her own bed.

"When we fought," Valyn corrected. "There's no sense in avoiding it. We fought Shana, and we're going to fight again." He wasn't foolish enough to think they wouldn't. It was simply how they were.

"But that is beneficial. Keep it safe - I've heard rumor of thieves among us."

If he had been raised differently, Valyn would be fidgeting by now. But instead he was growing more still and more stiff.

"I'll be careful," Shana replied quietly, not missing the way he grew increasingly more distant with each passing second. The mention of their fight the day before did little to improve the situation.

She gave a quiet sigh, not meeting his gaze. "Valyn, did I do something to upset you last night?" she asked, needing to know. They fuzzy memories were all weel and good for her, but not if they kept him acting so strangely around her.

"No, you didn't upset me." Valyn shook his head, tightly. His eyes went to the door, then back to Shana. She was most likely getting the wrong impression - she wasn't Shadow, who could always pinpoint what was making him moody.

Stiffly, Valyn reached out and patted her hand. "I'm not upset with you," he repeated, hoping she'd believe him. He was uncomfortable and confused, but not angry.

He was late, but that was the least of his worries. He'd left his Senior Aide in charge of the office, and now all hell had broken loose while he was several states away. It was going to take some serious spin to keep the omnipresent media from damning him in the court of public opinion. He'd worked too hard to build his political dynasty to lose it over something this insignificant ( ... )
