Day 29: Waiting Room/Lobby 1

Jan 04, 2008 20:57

When the nurse suddenly appeared after the intercom's announcement, Ritsuka could only stare at her. He had a visitor? He knew that Miku had one, but to think that he would get one? He couldn't imagine who would come to see him. Seimei was gone, Soubi was here... Or so he hoped. It had been almost two shifts since he'd last seen the older man ( Read more... )

Of all the things that Jade expected this truly was the frosting on his cake. That wasn't to say that he was completely against it, oh no not at all. It was almost a pleasantry to be acknowledged like this, though he wasn't quite sure what would come of it. But he never really minded surprises, if they were to his benefit anyway. So when the nurse meandered over just as he was about to step foot into the Sun Room he gave her a brisk nod before following her down through the hallway ( ... )

Loved ones, indeed. The moment she walked through the door, Nephry Mann scanned the room and found her brother, sitting rather peacefully with that mysterious smile as always. It was such a heartbreaking thing to do to him, making him stay locked up in an insane asylum. But considering the alternatives...

"Barry," She smiled slightly, taking a seat next to her brother. He didn't look like he had changed at all. Was she supposed to be relieved or saddened by this?

Nephry took a quick look around before she rustled through her purse, getting something wrapped in tinfoil and handing it to Jade.

"I don't know if we're allowed to give you things here, but it's your favorite. From Jill's Sandwiches, remember?"

Jade should've expected his own sister to 'make the trip'. After all, it seemed to be the safest route considering the other alternatives. He took the time to inspect her carefully, clearly fascinated with the fact that not a single hair was out of place on Nephry's head. She seemed as well as ever, and Jade saw no need to be hostile to his own flesh and blood. He'd done that plenty when they were younger.

"Hello, Nephry. It's been a while, hasn't it?" If he remembered correctly, those were the very words he'd said to her after Akzeriuth's collapse. But this wasn't exactly the right place to be nostalgic, looking down at the tightly bound object with mild curiosity before pulling it open to peer inside.

"Is this... roast rappig? You shouldn't have." Of all the things to give to him. Even he had to bow his head back and laugh before gingerly pulling the foil back over the sandwich. He already had someone else in mind to give this to after this little visit was over.

As if sensing Jade's evil intentions, Nephry gave him somewhat of a withering glare.

"Now don't keep that sandwich and shove it in Ben's face," She sighed, but in reality, Nephry wouldn't have minded. At least Barry was here with someone that he knew... She wondered if she would be allowed to see Ben too. But the thought only lingered in Nephry's mind for a moment before she launched back into conversation. It seemed that this whole visit was awkward for Nephry, but to tell the truth, she was just glad she could see her brother again. There wasn't much else to say.

"So, how are Benjamin and Timothy doing anyway?" She asked. It had been... how long, 6 months after Professor Nebilim had died? Nephry had to wonder how they were coping.

"Oh I'm sure he'll be more than grateful if he knew that it came from you." Jade responded in his usual devious tone, setting the sandwich aside for now before turning his full attention back to his sister. It'd take a bit getting used to these names, but it was easy to understand whom she was talking about.

But what he found strange was how their names were mismatched around, as Nephry responded to her own just fine. He could only assume that it would've simply been too much for some of the other patients here. That or it would’ve been more frustrating than amusing, even to the man who was supposedly in charge.

"Ben's doing fine I'm sure, though last I've heard 'Timothy' may have gotten himself in quite a bit of trouble, solitary confinement and all." Jade answered with a chuckle. It didn't really matter to him, as long as Dist was out of his hair for the remainder of their stay.

Hearing about what happened to Timothy made Nephry's brows furrow. Timothy always was the receiving end of Barry's cruelty and this hadn't changed since childhood. She felt so sorry for him, yet even to adulthood Barry continued to take advantage of Timothy's admiration of him. And then... that incident happened and here he was, rotting in some asylum.

"I don't suppose that would be your doing as well?" She pressed, giving Barry a tight-lipped frown. "Barry, need I remind you that tormenting Timothy was what got you here in the first place?"

He did remember... right? Nephry had been keeping up to tabs with her brother's condition, but according to the doctors... he hadn't made any progress at all, besides, responding to his real name when called by it. But that didn't seem to mean anything.

"I don't see fit to waste my energy on something so-" But Jade was cut short as Nephry finished her sentence, earning her a puzzled stare before it was quickly replaced by his usual smile. So they've managed to conjure some formidable reason to lock him away? He'd have to give the place credit for paying attention to the details of his own personal opinions and was all the more curious as to how they've managed to do it.

"My apologies, but I can't seem to remember how I've wronged myself to the point of being criminally insane. All these drugs they've given me must've worn away the memories." The Colonel elaborately explained, casually leaning against his chair as he did so.

"Would you care to fill in the gaps?"

Nephry froze. How was she to explain this? The doctors had warned her of this; that he would lose his memories, and replace them with false ones. Why else was he calling her 'Nephry', some name they came up with years ago when they used to play make-believe? She was playing along for now, just for the sake of being easy, but now she was to explain why he was here?

"Surely you remember something," Nephry frowned, staring at Barry. "Barry, you know I can't tell you the details in public. The company wouldn't allow it."

He did remember the company, right? Nephry had the sinking feeling he wasn't remembering any of this.

"I can assure you," Jade responded with much emphasis. "That I haven't the slightest clue what you're talking about."

He could only play the part for so long, but at least this Institute provided enough justification for the amount of ignorance he was unfortunate enough to cope with. Still, he was determined to find out, especially since his sister appeared to know more than enough about the subject at hand.

"We could move to a corner if you'd like." Jade suggested jokingly, already standing from his seat as if there was no need to cause an argument on something so petty as 'privacy'.

The whole situation wasn't a joking matter to Nephry, who remained sitting. It wouldn't matter if they moved or not, but considering where they were... anyone repeating this in here was bound to be disregarded anyway. It sounded ludicrous enough to be a delusion.

"How could you forget? That was the day the..." She trailed off, deciding not to mention that. No, she didn't want to aggravate her brother's condition.

"You used to work for a pharmaceutical company. You and Timothy were scientists, I was part of Public Relations, the Professor was your senior and Benjamin was on the Board of Directors. It all sounds familiar, right?" She looked up at Jade hopefully. He was always a rational man, so hearing this would probably ring some bells.

A pharmaceutical company? That was certainly a unique position considering the truth of the matter, but it at least had some kind of formidable background behind it. However, all thoughts ceased the instant the Professor was mentioned, and Jade looked down at Nephry with a mixture of awe and skepticism.

"It does have a air of familiarity to it." He calmly remarked, settling back down in his chair.

"But... how exactly does that tie into me being here?" Even though he was playing along with the whole ordeal, he still had the right to question its whereabouts. It wasn't really the destination itself that Jade had in mind, but more of the method of transportation it took to get there. Because really, it was only obvious to know what happened in the end.

It did and it didn't. Nephry continued to explain; maybe he was simply doing it to agitate her. She didn't like talking about the incident as much as anyone else involved did.

"You were an important scientist, but you still insisted on tormenting Timothy. You and Benjamin tried to kill him," She was sure that wasn't the intent (she hoped), but she said it anyway, "by locking him up in a room with one of your... projects,"

She frowned.

"The Professor tried to save him." Nephry didn't feel like going on. Even though she seemed calm on the outside, it was clear that she was feeling quite uneasy.

"What a shame it is to have failed such a daunting task, but he truly does have the tenacity of a cockroach." Jade responded coolly, idly drumming his fingertips against his lap while Nephry continued on.

From what he managed to pick up so far it seemed like they were gathering bits and pieces from his own past to conjure up this tall tale. It was nowhere near a replica, nor did it really mimic it to fashionable degree. But the essence was still there, but in a more comical way than what he'd imagined, so there was no harm done in enjoying his sister's story.

"I can imagine what happened in the end." Jade replied, suppressing a sigh that his own true memories tried to expel.

"Timothy is not a cockroach," Nephry interrupted, rather childishly. he coughed when she realized her own error. But for the most part, he listened and didn't object to anything she said. Maybe he did remember?

His response confirmed, to her at least, that he did remember what happened. Nephry just nodded, glad that she didn't have to tell Barry the gory end result.

"You were talking about the strangest things afterwards. Replicas, fonons, some land called Auldrant. You said there was a way to bring her back," Nephry recalled. There might have been, with their research, but the company had made sure that the Professor stayed dead. So now it was impossible...

"I don't know what this is all about, but I'm also here to tell you one thing, Barry. When you get out of here, it's best you don't tell anyone. The company isn't... happy about this."
