Allen struggled to keep Sanji from falling over as they walked further into the institute. The halls were so dark without the portable lanterns, it was difficult to see much going on in front of them. He didn't like it, but there wasn't much he could do about it for the time being.

"Whatever is close I guess," Allen replied to Sanji ( Read more... )

[ From here.]

There was enough light filtering in through the entryway that he was able to turn his flashlight back off once he got to the center of the hallway. Which was good, since he'd noticed that the light was dimmer than it had been before. Whatever power made it work might be starting to run out, and it wasn't an idea he liked. He'd have to ask one of the modern-day kids, maybe Artemis, about what he should do.

He stopped opposite the lobby doors, by the sun room. He didn't want to be in the way of anyone trying to get in from the outside. He wasn't real pleased about the sounds of combat still filtering in, but he'd told Rukia that he'd wait for her here.

Renji frowned. Something niggled at the back of his mind, like a familiar person he couldn't name was standing over his shoulder. He wanted to dismiss it out of hand, considering how this place screwed with his senses. All that was behind him was a wall, and beyond that, the Sun Room.

And the Sun Room was where nasty things invariably lived. Though Renji had to wonder about this night; it was one where the prisoners were going to be set against each other, if the pattern held. But most of the prisoners had been out in town, and returning when night fell; they weren't exactly a bunch of sitting ducks, waiting in their rooms for the nurses to come get them. He hadn't seen anyone get dragged off the buses or anything.

So where that left him, he didn't know. In the end, he decided, what the hell, he'd poke his head in to check it out. He and Rukia were supposed to go to the Basement anyway, once the mess outside was taken care of, and the easiest route was through the Sun Room. If there wasn't something bad in there tonight, it would be most convenient.

And if there was something bad... well, better for him to find out than some damn kid wandering along. At least he could flash step.

Or maybe some damn kid was already in there and in trouble, and that was the weird feeling he had. He didn't like that thought at all.

Sword at the ready, Renji moved cautiously into the Sun Room.
