NIGHTSHIFT 28: BUS 1

Nov 26, 2007 15:00

Artemis had always been skeptical as to whether or not the things present in the Institute actually turned into their nightly counterparts. He'd never seen a kitten turn into a rotting cat, or a nurse turn into a syringe-covered monstrosity. Now he had, and he was very sorry that he'd seen it up close and personal. It'd been difficult to keep ( Read more... )

This was certainly an unexpected twist. It was odd that even he couldn't quite detect what kind of sorcery was behind it, but he wasn't going to dwell on it. Keman was already up and going after the monsters, leaving him with the responsibility of protecting Ururu. Keman was terribly like Syaoran in that regard, protecting the ones important to him seemed to come first. Yuuhi wished things could always be that straight-forward and simple, but it just wasn't the case.

"Do your best Keman," he said encouragingly as the boy left them to face the dangers on the bus. He did feel slightly guilty for not volunteering his own magic, but then, he'd promised himself he wouldn't use it.

"Hold on tightly, ok?" he spoke softly to Ururu as he rose from his seat, one arm under her bottom for support, the other protectively around her.

These nurses weren't waiting patiently. Not after seeing their kin struggling in the back. This time, they were on the offensive.

One caught sight of a threat drawing close and leapt, scalpel claws outstretched to slash at the foolish human's midsection.

Ururu had tried to be patient, had tried to get Fai to let her down. But Keman had gone ahead, far too fast, and now he was hurt and falling. He couldn't defend himself anymore, he was bleeding, he was hurt ( ... )

He hadn't been far behind when he saw Keman go down. Ururu saw it too apparently. He didn't even have time to draw breath before she pushed him back with a frightening amount of strength. He lost his balance and thudded backward against one of the benches. By the time he was up again, Ururu was delivering a blow to the nurse's head. It felt like the library in Rekord all over again. When Syaoran had lost his sense of self and...

There was no time to think about that though. He hurried toward the fallen boy, his expression concerned. He patted the boy's cheek with his hand and placed an arm under him for support. "Keman? Keman, come on, stay with us. We're gonna get out of here, ok?" Though, at the moment, he really wasn't sure how. He just knew he had to move the boy and quickly. Then he had to find someone to treat the wound. "Do you think you can walk?"

It seemed like Roland wasn't the only one who'd seen Keman going down. Of course, the pale man hadn't really expected to smell blood so quickly, but... now he did. Now he was reminded that he hadn't exactly fed well in the previous night. And more importantly, there was a group of three children trying to go against creatures with razor-sharp scalpels for limbs ( ... )

The shattering kick to the nurse's head cracked its skull, green blood leaking from the wound. It screamed and went to its knees, thrusting out its bloodied talons to strike at Ururu even as Roland kicked it again.

Ururu had no words for Roland, mostly because he didn't exist. Not in Ururu's mind, where there was only the enemy, the danger, the enemy that was still alive. Her body rotated fully with the force of the kick, and she landed neatly on the ground just as the nurse lunged at her. The bloody edges of the nurse's knives sliced into Ururu's shoulder, but the little girl hardly seemed to care; if she felt the pain, it didn't register. If she feared the blood, it didn't matter.

"The enemy is dangerous. Danger." Roland would have his answer, but only because Ururu spoke it quietly, oblivious to who was listening. "Danger must be eliminated."

She reached up, gripping the nurses neck with all of her strength. It wasn't what it should be, but it was enough to break bones, to twist the creature's neck until it snapped in her hands. Then the enemy would be dead, the first of the danger eliminated.

Yuuhi did what he could to shield Keman from the fighting. His blue eyes widened as he saw the creature strike Ururu next, but she didn't even seem to feel it; she was like a doll. It was too similar, too much like Syaoran as he'd fought those beasts in the library. He didn't even know these people, had only been on a bus ride with them for a few minutes, but still he felt guilty for their predicament. Bad luck followed him like a plague and he knew exactly why.

Poor Keman was speaking some kind of gibberish and Yuuhi could only watch the blood spread. He wasn't a healer, he'd never had that sort of ability! This was no place to be treating the boy, there wasn't even anything to treat him with!Kurogane was supposed to be here at a time like this! He was the dependable one! This was the part where he was supposed to rush in and save the day ( ... )

Good... the wounded dragon was out of the picture, and with him any danger that the two would get caught in the crossfire. That was more than good, really; while Roland was wishing that he had one of his comrades nearby to give some backup, it was better for as few people as possible to be caught by the creatures.

Of course, the girl was acting almost like a berserk demon herself, albeit as an inverse; inhumanly distant instead of filled with ravenous hunger. The point was the same, however. It didn't take a person like Roland to realize that the girl was suffering from an altered mental state, nor to notice just how much more powerful she was.

As it was? Roland kept his eyes open for what might be coming, and didn't try to strike again. With how the girl was fighting, Roland couldn't get a clean shot in anyway... and as much as he hated to admit it, she seemed to be handling herself well. If she could handle just one of the monsters, then Roland's task would be that much easier.

A strangled cry came from the nurse's throat as the girl caught her in an iron grip. It wouldn't go down calmly, it's clawed hands again coming up, aimed for Ururu's side. But the thrust missed when the nurse's neck snapped, catching her in the hip instead.

The nurse was hardly alone, however, an orderly quickly moving into the fray. Little could be seen of it in the light, save for its bulky shape. It lumbered at the pair, charging as much as he could in the cramped space, ready to grab either and throw them into the wall.

[Tad, who is taking over for Fey.]

Fai's cry fell, as he suspected, on unaware ears. Bones had given under her fingers, snapping and causing the once-human to fall limp. Ururu released the now dead creature, her mind giving it a new classification: terminated enemy.

But there was another one coming. Chains rattling as the orderly ran, Ururu stood to face him. Still no fear, nor acknowledgment of those around her. The girl was just as empty as this new threat came at her. It was another enemy, another thing that must be eliminated.

Ururu moved to meet the creature, her movements fast, perhaps enough to dodge the outstretched arms. Her fist was cocked back, and when she came in range, she threw it outwards in a punch, aimed for the monster's gut.
