The detective almost crushed the slip of paper in his hand with excitement. He hadn't eaten the miserable breakfast that'd been issued to every patient, too miserable himself to actually realise he was starving. Not that he had the slightest idea why; wasn't like he'd done anything strenuous last night, unless gathering enough

Hikaru and Kaoru walked to the restaurant arm-in-arm. It attracted them a few stares here and there, but nothing they weren't used to.
Hikaru knew that he was supposed to be Kaoru right now, so he made sure to stay in character. Everything from his mannerisms to the way he walked were exactly perfect. It had to be. Even though no one else could tell them apart, it was important to him that he be as true to Kaoru's image as he possibly could.
And he'd had a lifetime of practice.
The inside of the restaurant was kind of kitschy and cluttered, but it seemed like a five star compared to the "Tasty Burger" he'd seen down the street. Plus, it had an A in the window. He was familiar enough with American restaurants to know that this place was, at least, clean. Not like he couldn't sue if he got food poisoning, of course, but it was comforting not to have to think about rat droppings in his food (or whatever).
Kaoru was him right now, so he'd let him be the assertive one.

"Let's see if they have anything we like. It's a little sad this place, isn't it? Like it wants to be a decent but... it can't afford it. Plus it's in the wrong area... Everything here's so dull."

"Totally boring. What about this...turkey pot pie? Didn't they serve something like that for dinner a few nights ago?"

Notepad in one hand and a water pitcher in the other, she headed over to the boys' table, her heels clicking as she went. Her ponytail bounced.
"Welcome," she greeted with a charming smile, filling up their glasses with the ice water. "What can I get for you today?"

Without looking at the waitress, what with her being a mere servant, 'Hikaru' put the menu down and said "Two Turkey Pot Pies."
He sipped the water and pulled a face at his brother. Tap water. Barely even cold, it would be room temperature by the next sip.
"If this meal doesn't meet our tastes, we should call for the manager."

"Ew. Gross. We totally should. You want coffee? I want coffee."
Isn't that what this sort of place did? Gave you a mug and refilled your coffee as much as you wanted? It wasn't going to be good coffee--this place was no Starbuck's--but it would be more than they normally got.

She didn't bother scribbling down their orders -- two turkey pies wasn't hard to remember -- but she did nod and force another smile. Friendly, yes. That was her job. Her parents were paying her.
"I'll be right back." And she was, sweeping away and returning with their coffee just moments later before disappearing off again with a, "your order should be ready soon."

He tasted the coffee and repressed a shudder. Luckily the bitter aftertaste was thrown off course when he spotted a familiar face.
"Hey! I see the light! Shall we call him over?"

He too tasted the coffee and pulled a face. Augh. Hardly the nearly $200 per pound Kopi Luwak that they drank on a regular basis back home. Or even Starbuck's, for that matter. He had to dump tons of cream and sugar in his before it was drinkable.
But at least it was coffee.
The devious grin returned. "Let's. You call him over, though. He's got a better relationship with 'Hikaru,' after all."

Kaoru followed suit with the cream and sugar. Luckily it was the sort of thing they both did, although Hikaru tended to have a little more sugar. Who would have guessed, eh?
"Yagami-san! Hey, wanna join us?" he called over, waving Light over. He pushed a seat out with his foot, smiling.

What?!
Kaoru's performance had been perfect. Everything about it was exactly how Hikaru himself would have acted, sounded, looked. Even their parents couldn't tell them apart, especially when they did this.
The only person who could was Haruhi.
Hikaru shot his brother a shocked look, but had quickly masked it with a perfect smile by the time Light joined them at the table.
"Close, but no cigar," he said in Kaoru's voice. "I'm Kaoru. That's Hikaru. But yeah, we're sure."

"Don't worry, everybody gets it wrong at first. Actually, they don't often stop getting it wrong," he laughed, perfectly imitating Hikaru.
"Have you eaten? We can call the waitress over again. Don't expect much though... this seems to be a pretty poor town."

Ah, well. If Light was playing along with them, so would they.
"Our parents had to color-code us when we were growing up," he replied idly, still perfectly imitating his twin. "Hikaru was pink. I was blue. And they still got it wrong." Hikaru and Kaoru had eventually decided it amongst themselves when they were about three or four, but there was a 50% chance that they'd decided wrong. "We're used to it."
He handed Light the menu that he'd discarded after the waitress left them. "We're getting the turkey pot pie."
He'd let Kaoru answer the question about what they were up to.
