Day 20: Breakfast

Nov 27, 2006 14:08

Scar felt as if he'd passed out as soon as he'd gotten to his bed due to the admittedly strong fatigue and pain that having a badly injured arm tended to cause a person to feel, even one as conditioned and battle-worn as the stern-faced Ishbalan. He woke up feeling rested but regretful, and his fear that he'd wasted a Nightshift ripe with the ( Read more... )

The food sat well enough. Kiden looked down at her empty plate with a bit of a disappointed look. She was still hungry, but unwilling to see if there was more food to be scrounged up. Besides, running on a full stomach was a painful experience she had vowed never to repeat. The cafeteria was filling, and she dragged her vision up to take a look at everyone.

They were all wearing the same uniforms, and ushered in by nurses or orderlies. This was like watching a movie about inmates, and just as surreal.

Kiden was surprised when someone sat down next to her. She turned her head to take in the blue hair, yellow eyes and rather vicious scar across his face. No staring, of course, just a covert little glance and then she looked back down at her empty plate. Well, he was certainly not the average person. He was also probably far taller than her, and had a certain attitude about him.

Course, she was a bit tempted to say something. To ask him about anything, instead she stole another peeking look at him. Very weird appearance. She definitely wouldn't say this, but he sort of reminded her of an elf.

"...hi."

When the girl actually spoke to him, Saïx tilted his head to the side, arching a single eyebrow at her as his yellow eyes stared down at her. There was nothing menacing about the stare nor even curious, really. He was just looking at her, gaze emotionless as ever.

The Nobody intended to ignore her timid greeting but was feeling somewhat appeased on this morning. Besides, there was a decent chance she might be useful in the information department.

"Do you know why we're here?" Saïx replied, direct and to the point as he blatantly ignored the small 'hello' he'd just received.

Oh, so not even a greeting? Kiden's brows snapped together in annoyance. She had no idea where he was, and he obviously wasn't interested in being polite. The blonde tilted her head to the side, and sat up a bit, arm uncurling from around her plate.

"No fucking idea, you have any idea?" Okay, so the swear word had just popped out like that. She hadn't meant to, but he had seemed so bland someone had to be exciting out of the two of them.

She was a little worried. No appearance of anyone familiar and everything seemed muted. If she was really in danger though, wouldn't her dad have showed up? He always showed up when she was in trouble.

The slightly-arched eyebrow rose noticeably higher at the random use of such colorful language. Saïx could hardly fathom the need for it, though he supposed one with a heart might have been offended by his short words and lack of proper etiquette. Perhaps he would humor her.

"One might assume not, seeing as though I inquired first," Number VII mused in the same, expressionless tone. "You awoke last night as well, then?" It would've seemed a silly question, but Saïx listened to the intercom carefully even if he seemed to pay it little heed. She could've very well simply awoke this very morning, which would mean she still had her first night ahead of her, and he could assume that most first nights were about the same.

Oh he was a real riot. Kiden figured maybe he was an ex-lobotomy patient or something. Certainly had the monotone down for it. Too bad he knew nothing about this place, because she was itching and it wasn't just the clothes.

They had both been running around in the night, then, by what he'd said. Creepy night that it had been. Weird too, that this morning had been so different from last night. For one, a nurse had been there, and everything seemed so ordered as opposed to last night's horrifying chaos. "Yeah, though I'd like to know how I got here..." Kiden supposed she had seen some pretty weird things in the past year or so. But nothing this weird.

Saïx actually found himself sympathizing with the girl, were such a thing even possible given his distinct lack of heart. Last he could recall, he'd been vanished, fading away into a cold, black nothingness. It didn't seem logically possible to come back from such a state, and there was no victory in his revival, no heart beating beneath his chest. The Nobody almost sneered. The Superior's ambition had not been realized, then, and there wasn't a rhyme or reason for their sudden existence here.

"Indeed," he echoed, though his yellow eyes were far away for a moment. A brief pause. She seemed to be of little use at the time, but who knew about what the future might hold? "Your name, if you don't mind me asking," Saïx mused, putting stress on the forced niceties to the point where it might almost seem mocking had he not been so bland.

How frustrating was it to finally think that she had gotten somewhere only to be here instead? Kiden wasn't exactly sure how frustrating either, but it was a lot. At least her conversation partner wasn't that bad. In fact, he just seemed a bit bland, and not as offsetting as she had first guessed.

"Kiden Nixon. Though, I guess, just Kiden now," her family had moved away, happy to be rid of her Ty had said. Oh well, she stubbornly thought, she could do fine on her own. She would have to be fine on her own. "And who're you?"

"I wasn't aware that most people made a habit of losing parts of their names," Saïx commented, eyes flashing cruelly for a moment. One had to guess that losing a family name would be some form of traumatic experience, after all, and he was faintly interested in observing her reaction to such a tactless comment.

"You may call me Saïx. I haven't another name to speak of, so you needn't bother to ask," he continued, short and to the point so that she would have little to question. And if she did? He simply wouldn't care to answer.

Kiden pulled a face at Saix. It wasn't a very nice or mature face, and she wondered, briefly, if punching him would make her feel better. Probably not. She'd learned pretty quickly that it never made her feel better.

"Whoop dee fucking doo, Mr. Saix." She said instead and looked for something else to do. Something other than sit here and exchange words with mr. bland-and-asshole here.

Saïx was inwardly amused by the crude girl. She was decidedly obnoxious, and yet her bravery was almost admirable. Apparently, she cared little for her potentially precarious position. He'd admittedly pressed her to be so crude, but it had bee so easy. He wondered just how she'd last mouthing off to some of the other patients, those less inclined to bide their time as he was.

His eyes lifted as he noticed the nurses and orderlies coming in to usher them all out of the cafeteria again. Herded like sheep... He grimaced slightly and stood, looking down at the girl before her moved to leave. When his back was to her, he spoke again.

"Indeed. It was a pleasure, Kiden." Simple words, polite enough had Number VII not been the one uttering them with those slight traces of contempt.
