Nightshift 26: Dr. Wilson's Office

[From hereHitsugaya led the way into the next office. The room would probably have been considered friendly, if not for the darkness and his fear of what he might discover. Whatever had happened to Renji...whatever he had been tricked into doing...no ( Read more... )

((from here))

He flicked the flashlight beam around the room, checking for anything suspicious or possibly dangerous. It had looked safe enough from outside, and Artemis and Hitsugaya obviously hadn't had any problems, but it was best not to take chances.

A couch. Perfect. "Lay Ken down on the couch. One of us might as well be comfortable."

Yohji entered the room, helping Aya with Ken. He glared down at his unconcious teammate. "Damn, why'd you have to train so much. You're like a rock." He nodded to Omi and moved him over to the couch, setting him down gently and then perching on the edge of it. "So, what now?" He needed something to take his mind off things after all.

Ken on the couch, Aya moved to close the door behind them, locking it to be sure. He stayed on his feet, knowing unnecessary bending down would aggravate the wound more. And carrying Ken had been quite enough.

He leaned against the wall beside the door and let Omi lead the talking. He would have liked to throw in a question or few of his own but would wait for another moment.

'What now' was a very good question. "Kill time until dawn, unless one of you has a better suggestion."

He tucked the bugnuks under one arm. It was a bit of an awkward position, but at least it freed up his hand, and he didn't want to risk leaving them sit somewhere with the way the night had a tendency to end suddenly and without warning. Managing to lose the weapons after that business in the hall... well, he just wasn't going to lose them. Besides, he didn't need full range of motion to poke through the papers and files lying around to try to figure out what Artemis and Hitsugaya had been looking for.

"Not really," Yohji mumbled, steadfastly avoding meeting the eyes of his teammates. More time meant more questions and he wasn't sure if he wanted to answer them.

He started rummaging through the objects on the desk just on the off-chance that anything useful could be found. Nothing, most of it was useless for their purposes. He eyed the mini-fridge contemplatatively as well as the filing cabinet. "Want to look through the files? I might check my doctor's office to see if there's anything." He was curious to see what his file said, how much they knew.

Aya followed Omi with his gaze, thinking. For now, he ignored Yohji and the answers he'd like to shake out of the blond, he'd have time for that when the situation didn't include brainwashed Ken and... Omi.

Sighing, Aya folded his arms over his chest and let his shoulder relax against the wall, so wired up it was practically possible to see the tension riding heavy on him.

Glancing through the files, he didn't recognize any of the names, but that didn't necessarily mean anything. He glanced up when Yohji said something about checking his own doctor's office. "I don't like the idea of you going alone with possible aggressors nearby. Take Aya with you. Not like Ken's going to wake up any time soon."

He bit his lip, stopping himself from saying anything else. That would be the easiest way out for all of them, wouldn't it? Come tomorrow, they could just deny anything had happened at all and avoid all the awkward questions.

A scowl crossed Yohji's face at Omi's words and he had to bite his tongue to keep from replying scathingly. He took a breath to force down his irritation before speaking. "I can manage going a couple of doors down on my own," he said flatly. Maybe it was stupid of him, but he didn't want to be alone with Aya right now, not when there were questions the other man undoubtedly wanted. "Besides, he might wake up and if he does you're probably in more danger."

Staring blankly at his teammates, Aya cursed inwardly, knowing what was coming but not quite knowing how to stop it. At the moment he didn't give a shit about Yohji's temper, or his pride, but Omi's actions worried him. He'd give the boy until tomorrow before meddling.

"No," he said simply into the conversation. He'd go with Omi's decisions eighty percent of the time, but reserved some leeway when he thought there was no reason behind them. Ken wouldn't most probably be in any condition to attack Omi if he'd wake up, it was a miracle if he'd stand up after that clonk to the head, but Omi would be alone as well. And at least Yohji knew what he was dealing with, obviously a bit too much for Aya's liking.

"You can manage a lot of things on your own, can't you." He dropped his head, going back to shuffling through the files. He hadn't really meant to say that, but...

I'd suggest not butting in where it's not needed.

They'd been acting so much like a team before, like he was used to, almost. Going back to this hurt, but he didn't know how to stop it. "Sorry. If you're going, go."

He was a little surprised at Aya refusing Omi's order, but glad of it as well. He couldn't deal with the questions, needed some time to get his thoughts together and he couldn't do that with the two of them there.

His expression darkened into a mixture of hurt and anger at Omi's words and he grabbed his knife heading for the door. "Fine."

"...good god, Yohji," Aya muttered as the blond stormed out past him. It had been a while since he had felt this strong an urge to smack the idiot around. But that had to wait for another moment.

After the door closed behind Yohji, he let silence stretch between himself and Omi for a moment. Yohji was a dramaqueen at his worst, Aya could be indifferent when he wanted to, but Omi - not Mamoru, Omi - rarely was neither stupid nor uncaring towards his teammates.

And that, if something ever could, bothered Aya. Damn him if he would be even part a reason why the boy would have to go there.

"Omi," he finally said gingerly. "I think we have to talk."

And yet he certainly felt stupid enough right now. He scrubbed angrily at his eyes with the sleeve of his shirt, for once glad that it was dark, maybe even dark enough that Aya wouldn't notice. Of all the stupid things to cry about, this had to be near the top of the list.

It took him a minute and a couple of shaky breaths till he was sure he'd be able to keep his voice steady. Long enough, too, for him to pretend he hadn't heard Aya's statement. "Do you think we should wake Ken up? If he does have a concussion, I don't like the idea of just letting him sleep like this."

It might have been dark, but there was nothing wrong with Aya's hearing and he could tell by the shaky breaths that Omi's eyes probably weren't red only because he had been rubbing them. Cursing both himself and Yohji again for running away, he moved without thinking to Omi and reached to squeeze a shoulder that seemed more fragile to him than it had any right to seem.

"I think he can deal a while longer," he said almost softly, feeling the guilt so thick he could have worn it as a cloak around him. He wished he would have known how to be casual like Yohji or Ken, just ruffle Omi's hair and be done with it. But he didn't.

"Omi," he begun hesitantly, then frowned a bit and continued persistently, "I'm sorry." No explanations, it was hard enough to breath out the words to begin with.

His head jerked up at the touch, and he barely stopped himself from flinching away, eyes wide. He'd expected to be ignored, maybe, for Aya to go along with the change of subject, or even a rebuke not to let his emotions get in the way. Anything but this attempt at comfort.

But Aya had chosen this. It was comfort and reminder all in one, reminder of just how different they were from what he'd come to expect over the years. He offered up a small smile, eyes flicking back to watch Ken. "No, I'm sorry, Aya-kun. You were right. I should have left well-enough alone, but I just thought..."

Thought what? Something. He wasn't quite sure what he'd been thinking. He sighed and pulled away, going to check on Ken. "How's your side? Has the bleeding stopped yet?"
