Nightshift 26: F-Block Bathroom

Aug 28, 2007 00:00

[From here.]Now, there was something obviously wrong with a man casually stepping into the female bathroom, but to Jade, if it existed it was free game. He refrained from turning on his flashlight, seeing as that his night vision was well developed enough to pick out the details even in pitch black ( Read more... )

"I didn't think there would be," Guy called back as he followed the man in. Though it seemed even darker in here, and the tile made the room a bit colder. Why would girls be hanging out in this place at night? It seemed a lot less sanitary, though that might just be a trick of the mind.

Nothing jumped out at him just from taking a simple look around. Did that mean they had picked the wrong place? Guy moved a little further into the room, but when he found he had almost run into a sink, he sighed and glanced over at Jade.

"Can I turn on my flashlight?" He'd heard it called that, so he assumed that was the proper name for the piece of fontech he had been carrying around.

"If you must," Jade sighed in disheartening way, already making his way down the stalls and began to push each one open. There was certainly nothing out of the ordinary besides the heaviness that still clung to the air like Dist to his leg. He had a feeling that disappointment was an emotion widely used in this Institute for various reasons, and the more he searched through the stalls the more evident it became that nothing was awaiting them.

"Have you managed to gather any information pertaining to the one responsible for this?" He asked after looking into the third stall down the line.

Maybe Jade didn't need light to see, but Guy had long ago learned that Jade wasn't normal. Not even human, maybe. He was still convinced he had some sort of cooling system in his normal attire, but he had never been able to find out for certain.

Still, he had more or less received permission, so he pushed the button that would turn the light on, using it to scan the room. There was nothing out of ordinary, and it didn't seem like there were any monsters around, either, so it wasn't a trap. Then again, the radio could have meant something else...

"Huh?" Guy glanced over at Jade - judging from the man's expression, he hadn't found anything, either. "No, not really. I guess it's the guy who talks over the intercom, but I don't know much about him." Was he worse than Van, even? Did his plans reach that far? It was hard to say.

That bit of information was easy enough to figure out on one's own, but maybe Guy hadn't resided there long enough to gather any more on this enigmatic man. Whatever the reason was, the blond's answer didn't help him much overall. One would think that it was the thought that mattered, but it wasn’t like Guy was giving him flowers on his deathbed.

It wasn't until Jade walked out of the last stall did he answer. "It would do us all some good if you wandered between the veterans and find anything you can about him. Not that I'd that trust you with a task like this on your own, it's obviously more of a group effort."

The Colonel heaved another over dramatic sigh before meandering over to Guy's side. "It doesn't look like whatever that man was hinting is here, we should try elsewhere." He already had a few places in mind, but it wasn’t wise to dawdle around with one task for too long.

So there was yet another thing he needed to add to his list of things to ask people about. As of late he had mainly been in contact with the people he knew, but if they hoped to solve anything about this place, they would all have to branch out and question others. That didn't bother Guy - it was the kind of thing he was good at, in fact.

"All right, I'll do that," he confirmed, though that didn't apply much to what they were doing now. It seemed like they had turned back for nothing, though he felt better having checked.

Where did Jade intend for them to go next? Instead of just being tugged around, he might as well make a suggestion, even if Jade wouldn't necessarily listen. "Maybe we should try the other female bathroom off of the Sun Room?"

"Perhaps we should." After all, it sounded as likely of a place as any, but there was something that didn't bode well with the Colonel. Namely, above the gruff and masculine chatter of his roommate, he could clearly make out the intercom's playful warnings. The metaphors that represented them could certainly do with some tweaking, but he was able to make out the gist of it.

"But how about we look around the whole F Block before we try our luck there? We might as well, seeing as we're here already." Jade thought it was a fair enough barter, but to him everything in his favor was fair.

"Fine by me." Wherever they went, it was going to involve something to do with women, so there was no point in making a big deal out of it. Guy was happy enough that he had avoided spending the night with Cyrille. She had seemed like a sweet enough girl, and she had been rather pretty (if young for His Majesty, not that it was his place to voice such opinions), but it was always something of an issue being around girls who didn't already know the details of his phobia.

Guy motioned for Jade to take the lead out of the room and back into the hall. The colonel had to walk in front and block him from anything female. If he voiced that sort of thought, though, it would probably just make Jade more inclined to toss him at some poor girl and cause a scene.

So it was settled then. Well, it had already been settled ever since Jade moved them back into the F Block in the first place, but no one was keeping count. Ah, but he saw what the blond was trying to do, sneaking a smile out of he corner of his lips as the latter tried to motion him out of the door first.

"I appreciate your mannerisms, Guy, but isn't the person holding the weapon supposed to go first?" Jade spoke in his usual obnoxious way, smile never leaving his face.

"Unless it's a custom here to let the unarmed old man lead. In that case, I guess I have no choice but to follow. The rules that is."

"Fine, fine." Guy could see how Jade was trying to trick him, but there was no point in resisting at this point. The older man was probably just giving him a hard time because he was getting nervous for no real reason. What were the chances that a girl was going to jump him out of nowhere, after all?

"If you're so frail that you need me to stay and front and keep you out of danger, I guess I can't argue," he teased back, though he was able to keep his tone rather serious as he delivered the line.

Though then he became a bit more serious as he took a tighter hold on the bat and gave it a few swings to test its weight and range. Eventually, he was going to have to use it, and he might as well be a little prepared.
