"K-ru....y' - Ere?"
Static and a few small thumps followed the broken speak.
"Karu? Are you still there?!" Kaoru called through, as clearly as he could. "I can't believe it. They really work!"
Well, hopefully they did. It all depended on Hikaru's reply.
Kaoru had been sat in his room all evening, wondering where his brother had gone, worrying to himself and trying to get the little gadget to work. He didn't want to leave his room until they were communicating. Just to make sure Hikaru stayed put and, well, because he didn't want to walk the halls alone. Not with that ghost out there.

He didn't realize that he'd been holding his breath until he let it all out in a sigh of relief. The static made the words almost unintelligible, but that was definitely Kaoru's voice on the other end.
"Ka...u! Th..nk...od! Thank God!" His own voice was badly distorted by the interference. He'd have to speak more clearly.
"Do we have to say things like 'ROGER!' and 'OVER!', now?" Hikaru asked, a little bit of the usual playfulness creeping into his voice. "...Over."

"Roger that!" he laughed. "Right. I'm le-ving my room. I'm gon-a come and get you, -k? STAY PUT. Over."
Kaoru jumped off his bed and put his dressing gown on before grabbing his torch and journal. He put a few pens in his pockets as they seemed to have worked for others.
Opening his door, he peeked down the hall and set off.
