Nightshift 25: M21-M30 Hallway

Jul 15, 2007 16:23

As soon as the doors had unlocked, Xemnas already headed outside. His amber eyes scanned the dark hallway, but there were patients nor monsters lurking within the darkness. Keeping his flashlight off as to avoid any unwanted attention, the Superior quickly proceeded ( Read more... )

Momo traversed down the hallway and spotted Hitsugaya easily. A smile touched her lips at the sight of her friend and she relaxed a little bit more. He was talking to someone she didn't recognize, so she decided not to interrupt.

Stopping a respectful distance away, the shinigami nodded to Hitsugaya when she made eye contact with him. Hands behind her back, she waited at attention for him to finish his conversation and address herself and Signum. If the knight kept her voice down, Momo would continue conversation with her. Inf act, Momo glanced over at the knight and grinned.

Signum took the cue to continue the conversation. "I find that misleading. As far as I know I never earned that rank; it was conferred on my when I was created. If you don't have formal ranks for leaders of smaller units your own is most appropriate."

By unit size, in fact, Momo's commanders and subcommanders sounded equivalent to something like a major or colonel in the Midchildan army... with only 13 units, maybe even generals. But she led soldiers and handled unit logistics in subordination to another, so it was the closest she could get.

Momo nodded. She was willing to grant the three thousand year-old knight and ex-general the same respect she'd expect of herself. Well, except she was shinigami and Signum was only a modified soul. An advanced modified soul, but a mod soul nonetheless.

"As you are not shinigami, 'vice captain' would be inappropriate, but 'lieutenant' would be similar. It's hard to tell, since the Captain of the First Division is the General of the Gotei 13." She shrugged. "I'm not sure how such ranks equivocate in your army."

A small smile. "Does Lieutenant Signum of the 6th Mobile of the Midchildan Army, Commander of the Wolkenritter work for you?" Sometimes formalities really did end up making names way too long for her tastes. She'd just prefer to introduce her friend as Signum-kun, but that wasn't how Hitsugaya worked.

"6th Mobile Unit," she corrected. If it was to be a formal introduction, her unit's name should probably be included in full. "It's acceptable. But you can leave off the part about the Wolkenritter. There aren't supposed to be parallel command structures." That didn't mean there weren't, but it wasn't official.

"Why is he so particular about titles? He must recognize that they're meaningless between organizations with no formal contact."

"6th Mobile Unit," Momo repeated and nodded.

Why did Hitsugaya like rank so much? "I'm not completely sure," she said in a quiet voice that would not carry to Hitsugaya. "I think it's so he can decide how much respect to initially give someone he meets. It also lets him know what kind of treatment they are used to. One isn't going to bark orders at someone who is used to being in command of a large division, treating them like an unseated. And the opposite goes for someone used to recieving orders such as an unranked memember of a militia."

"It all goes back to the concept of commanders and soldiers we spoke of earlier."

She was also of the opinion that it was a bit of a security blanket for Hitsugaya; he was such a workaholic. All work an no play made Shiro-chan a dull boy.

"Aa." Signum apparently had no comment on that. She didn't agree that rank was so important outside the context of the organization or society that granted it, but she couldn't argue with the idea that you had to take whatever you could get when you needed to make a snap judgement. So long as he didn't refuse to see beyond rank in the long run...

Momo's attention left Signum as she saw another man join Histugaya. She frowned a little, seeing the way the man was tensed up as if he wanted to jump the other unfamiliar one, but refused to move any closer. Hitsugaya could take care of himself.

Unfortunatly, this was going to cause a delay. "Great," she muttered with annoyance. This shinigami only had so much patience.

Hitsugaya walked away from the drama between Homura and Sanzo, thinking with some bitter amusement that he'd likely be walking into drama of his own. Still, he told Matsumoto he'd at least try. Why, oh why, did he agree to try? Stupid Matsumoto and her logic...

He pulled out a map from under his arm and handed it to Momo. He could only assume that the person next to her was Signum, but it was likely best to let Momo do the introductions. If nothing else, it was proper.

((skipping Signum with permission.))

Momo bowed to Hitsugaya as he approached. She accepted the paper he handed and gestured to Signum.

"Hitsugaya-taichou, this is Lieutenant Signum of the 6th Mobile Unit of the Midchildan Army," Momo said with formality. She then smiled and her tone lightned. "My friend."

She similarly introduced Signum to her childhood friend. "Captain Hitsugaya Toshirou of the 10th Division of the Gotei 13."

She continued to stand at attention, waiting for her briefing and any further orders. Time was of the essence.

"Well met, Captain." Signum bowed as she would to a knight representing another lord. It seemed most appropriate.

"We are eager to begin, but I'd like to talk to you later about the network you've formed." Her face was carefully neutral. She wanted to know more about its short-term goals and organization, practical matters, of course... but she also wanted to know exactly what he considered it and its members in relation to his old organization. It was one thing to ally herself with him, another to be drafted by a foreign entity she knew little about... even if there was currently little to distinguish the ideas in practice.

Hitsugaya bowed in return. He appreciated the respect Signum offered. Compared to a lot of how others had been acting, it was a welcome change. Her questions, however, were unfortunate. He really wanted to speak to Momo in private. "Good evening, Lieutenant," he said as he rose ( ... )

Momo maintained her quite as the two spoke, her smile growing a fraction as she recognized Hitsugaya's reaction to Signum's greeting. She liked it when her friends got along.

Hitsugaya wanted to speak to her in private? Oh yes... the briefing. She really hoped it wouldn't take long.

"As you wish, Taichou," was all the shinigami said and she waited for him to direct her to a specific location.

Had Sora known he was interrupting, he wouldn't have walked over to the group so eagerly as he turned down the hallway. Still, he had gotten excited when he recognized the description Hitsugaya had given him on the bulletin board, and... Well, they were near M23.

"Hey!" he called, heading over quickly, but managing not to actually run. "I'm Sora," he said, directing his comment to the other boy. "You told me to come talk to you so you could explain things, and I'm also going to have Rena and Kairi meet me here, so..."

It was only after he had babbled on for a while that he realized he might have walked in on something. He paused and narrowed his eyes slightly. "Am I interrupting anything?"

"That's fine for now." She nodded her assent. "I'll watch the hall."

She wondered what they had to talk about that couldn't be said in front of her. It wasn't her place to ask, of course, but she didn't like being left in the dark about operational details. If it was the talk of old friends it was fine, if ill-timed, but otherwise she expected transparency.

Hitsugaya was too busy tonight. Sora was only one of the many people he needed to speak with before they left, and Jean hadn't even shown up yet. Hopefully she hadn't been pulled by the staff. That would most likely leave him to fend for himself.

And then Homura and Sanzo were fighting. Fun.

He bowed respectfully to Signum first. "This won't take but a moment," he answered. Then he turned his attention to Sora.

"Sora," he said in acknowledgment. "I do need to talk to you and give you a new map...but I need to speak with Hinamori first. Wait..." he paused, about to recommend he wait by the door, but didn't want to get the boy involved in the fight. "Wait here and I'll be with you in just a moment."

He walked further into the shadows, out of earshot of the other two, but still close enough that their flashlights could be seen in the dark.

Momo gave Signum an apologetic smile and handed her the map to look over. "I'll be right back," she said and followed Hitsugaya, giving the new boy, Sora, a pleasant smile.
