Day 25: Breakfast

Kuja was, in fact, quite surprised to suddenly find himself in bed. An odd turn of events, as he previously remembered investigating the contents of a closet. If the genome hadn't known any better, he would have thought he hadn't even left the room. However, the items he was still holding obviously proved such thoughts untrue; he had left his room ( Read more... )

Hokuto woke up to find herself in the same (?) hospital room, with an empty bed across from her. She looked at the ceiling for a few moments, then started to turn over--and discovered her pockets were still very full. Um... okay... Considering that she'd stolen everything in them, she looked around and then quickly concealed them in a dresser drawer.

As she was closing it, the door opened; she whirled around to see a nurse standing in the doorway, who smiled at her. "Good morning, Kazuko!"

Having been warned, Hokuto managed a slightly weak smile back. "Good morning." At least it was vaguely close to her name--she shouldn't have too much trouble remembering to respond to it.

"Are you ready for breakfast?"

"Yeah," she nodded.

A few minutes later, she was in the cafeteria with a tray in her hands; trying to get information on what she was supposedly sick with hadn't worked--which sucked, because she wanted to know. Largely because that way, she could fake a few things.

She looked around the large room, trying to find someone to sit with, but she must have woken up late; almost everyone was occupied talking to others. After a few moments, she spotted someone still alone, at least.

Putting her tray across from the man, she said, "Hi. Mind if I sit here--? I don't really know anybody here yet."

Waka hadn't been particularly social during his time at this strange place called Landel's, aside from a few instances of flute-playing for generally appreciative audiences, and so he was mildly surprised to have company that wasn't Amaterasu, but then she made friends quickly and had plenty of people to talk to. That it was someone else who didn't really have any acquaintances was, in that light, unsurprising. He offered her a slight smile. "Neither do I," he replied. "So I suppose we're in the same boat." He tapped his flute idly on the table; he'd already finished what little breakfast he'd taken, as he still refused to come anywhere near the unrecognizable and largely unappetizing food this place served. Where were simple rice and seafood dishes when you needed them?

"I just woke up last night," she said, sitting down. "Nice timing, you know?" She smiled ruefully. "At least I got warned about everything before much had happened. I don't think I really look like a Kazuko, though..." she reached up and ran a hand through her hair. She was slightly embarrassed that she hadn't thought to brush it once she'd hidden everything, but the nurse's appearance had startled her a little. At least she didn't have obvious bedhead; no, her hair was as neat as if she hadn't slept at all. She felt okay, but aside from that wondered if she had.

"Oh, I'm Sumeragi Hokuto."

"Enchanté, Hokuto-chan." If Waka had any qualms about this mix of languages, or about how familiarly he was addressing her, he hid them well. "Any friend of Amaterasu's is a friend of mine." He bowed to her, at least as much as he was able to while seated, the hand holding his flute over his head. "Tao Master Waka at your service. Taos mastered, prophecies made, flutes played, swords swung, demons exorcised, and goddesses guided as the situation demands."

It was hard to say if the introduction was more or less eccentric than the prophet himself, or whether he was genuinely serious about any of it.

"...huh?" Hokuto stared at him blankly. "How did you--?" She tried to remember anything in the legends about a Master Waka... she drew a blank, but the "prophecies made" part certainly stuck out in her mind--it certainly might explain how he knew she'd met the goddess.

"Wow," she concluded. "So you managed to keep a crystal ball here, or what?" So it was a Western thing; mirror, crystal ball, same thing as far as magic was concerned. At least, she knew Subaru had had to improvise before, and those two having the same function made sense to her at least.

Also, she did watch too many Western movies. Hey, where were they, anyway?

"Seeing the future and fortunetelling aren't quite the same things," Waka replied, mildly amused despite himself. Imagine comparing his prophecies to that sort of ridiculousness... "And yes, I saw you with Amaterasu in one of my visions last night. I appreciate you helping her; I can't be looking after her all the time. And the more people she has around her who have faith in her, the stronger she'll become."
