Day 25: Breakfast

Jun 24, 2007 15:10

Kuja was, in fact, quite surprised to suddenly find himself in bed. An odd turn of events, as he previously remembered investigating the contents of a closet. If the genome hadn't known any better, he would have thought he hadn't even left the room. However, the items he was still holding obviously proved such thoughts untrue; he had left his room ( Read more... )

Recluse was almost... cheerful this morning. Not that most would be able to tell, he still scowled as much as he ever did. But he was fighting down a smirk over one event of the nightshift in particular.

Maiming that idiot had been so restorative. Knowing this place, the injuries would not be fatal, as long as the other patient survived the night. But in any other situation, that stab wound to the gut would have condemned him to a slow, agonizing death.

Jack was confused to find himself lying in bed, wounds treated and every item restored to its previous state. While he could understand his injuries being wrapped professionally, he had to hand it to this place- the furniture he had destroyed was as it had been and he had a CLEAN t-shirt on. Freaky ( ... )

The smirk could no longer be contained. Recluse stared up at the prey man with cold red eyes. "Of course not. And how is your chest wound this morning?"

Jack ignored everything from the other man's mouth and eased into a seat. As much as he could down play the other injuries (as they were below the clothing), he couldn't exactly hide the sling for his collarbone. Still, he could try and pretend it wasn't THAT big of a deal. Taking a sip of his juice, Jack continued, smirking the whole time. "I was hoping there might be some coffee or beer here this mornin'. But I guess I hope too much, eh, big guy?"

Only Jack Horner would want beer in the morning. But at least before, at the OTHER "prison-masquerading-as-something-less-sinister" setup, he had been able to roll out of bed and open up a bottle. He hated to admit it, but he kind of missed Golden Boughs when compared with this place...

"No such luck, I'm afraid." He didn't drink coffee, and he hadn't wanted a beer in decades. Well, not seriously. But dealing with Rouge Isles government and trying to kill Statesman had made him idly consider it before. "They're much too concerned for the health of their 'patients'." Which is why they were allowed out at night to get mauled by their fellow prisoners, of course.

"So I've noticed," Jack's smile faltered to a sneer, but he was quick to reapply the grin. "It's interesting that you're sitting all by your lonesome. I would have thought you'd be the most popular girl in school, with the way you acted last night. Apparently you're quite the actor."

Jack put a forkful of tater tots in his mouth. "Though," he said, between chewing, "I do remember you mentioned something about making weapons. What was that all about?"

"Oh, no. I was always 'the quiet one'. You know, the type they always describe in media coverage of a serial killer or something of the like." Not really, not at all. But why actually tell the truth to this man?

"You saw one last night. The one that was used to stab you twice and broke that collar bone. And we did go over this already. I find it a bad policy to arm those who have good reason to use the weapons on me." Unless they were several thousand Wolf Spider Tac-Ops standard assault rifles that he had sold to The Council. Wouldn't Requiem be furious when all of them jammed just as the Arachnos strike teams turned up.

"I never would have guessed," Jack replied, dryly. This freak of nature...were it not that Jack was interested in the possibility of getting himself a sword, he probably wouldn't have been part of this little tea party. He set his fork down and debated how he wanted to eat this sandwich.

"Why would I want to use weapons on you?" Jack asked, earnestly (whether or not it was sincere was another matter). "You've already demonstrated that you're quite capable of breaking me and I've got bigger fish to fry. Sorry to take you down a notch."

Haku had woken with a frown. Nothing had been accomplished the night before, a fact that he was sorely disappointed about. He knew his Master would be upset as well and Haku did not relish the idea of trying to calm him down.

He went along happily with his nurse to breakfast, smiling at her and nodding in the right places while she spoke to him.

Then he spotted Ricther. His new ... employer. With a slight bow and a smile, Haku assured the nurse he would be fine and excused himself.

"Forgive the interruption," he said brightly when he was close enough. He eyed Jack for a moment with a friendly smile that he did not mean then turned to the other man and bowed deeply. "I hope your evening was ... productive sir." He stayed in the bow. "Zabuza-san has informed me of our new relationship. It is an honor."

Recluse was about to repeat his explanation with more than a hint of irritation when Haku arrived. "Yes, it most certainly was. I had the chance to acquire the materials for several projects. And I should have at least half a dozen senbon for you by the next nightshift." Yes, he had managed to find a very interesting mix of things after his fight with Jack.

Recluse smiled coldly. "I will ensure that you are both paid with whatever items you require." Until this contract ceased to be advantageous, of course.

Jack narrowed his eyes. This son of a bitch was trying to get under his skin. He'd reject Jack's request for weapons, but when this Haku chick showed up...

Oh, well. She had mentioned something of a "new relationship". Perhaps this was a polite way of saying she was going to be sleeping with Recluse in exchange for help. Even Jack wouldn't go that far, but he wasn't a woman either.

"Haku," Jack smirked, "I thought we were meeting for lunch. I guess you can't stay away from me, can you, babe?"

If Recluse wasn't going to help him, there was no reason for Jack to waste time on him.

Haku rose from his bow and smiled at Recluse, eyes as cold as the other man's smile. He understood the situation quite well. "I hope I will be worthy of such payment."

He turned towards Jack and smiled warmly at him. "I'm sorry for ignoring you," he said. "I can see that you had a good night as well." He reached up and tucked hair behind his ear. His eyes were both uncovered this morning and his scars were livid against his pale skin.

"Clearly, you are in no need of assistance."

Recluse resisted the urge to comment on the other man's complete obliviousness in regards to Haku's gender. It would be more amusing to see how long he continued under his assumptions.

Good. Haku's eye was undamaged. It would have been bothersome to have recently hired a fighter who became so immediately handicapped. "Your own wounds have healed well." The only obvious sign of healing injuries for himself was the shallow cut below his left eye. One of only three minor hits that 'John' (obviously not his real name) had landed last night.

Oh ho! The little bitch was going to start with the biting comments so soon? Jack flashed his teeth. "Come on, have a seat," he said, patting the spot next to him with a free hand. "While I appreciate the offer of assistance, Haku, I'm doing just fine on my own. It looks a lot worse than it is, but the nurses insist I keep the sling on."

Jack shrugged and turned back to Recluse. "So, buddy, what type of payment are we talking about if I want a weapon?"

Haku's smile didn't waver at all. If anything, it grew brighter. He turned back to Recluse and bowed his head. "Thank you for your concern sir." He glanced over his wounds as well, and was pleased they weren't serious.

At Jack's questioning, Haku's smile turned teasing and he stood closer to Recluse, cocking one hip. "Your payment would be like mine," he said. He knew what kind of person Jack was and knew what kind of conclusions would be drawn just from his body language. "And I don't think you have the ...." He let his eys glance over Jack's body. "Skills needed."

Oh, this was turning out to be interesting. Haku was currently in charge of creating this newest deception for the idiot, so Recluse responded with nothing but a smirk at the other man. He was laughing far too much on the inside to think of much to say at the moment, anyway.
