Day 60: Recreational Field (Third Shift)

It was definitely a good thing that Tear had tracked him down, seeing how she'd had a wealth of interesting information for him. Granted, a lot of it he could have guessed himself, especially the details about Landel's capabilities, but it was always good to have it confirmed by a trustworthy source ( Read more... )

"No way, chocolate cake!" This certainly picked up his spirits. Too bad he was also being forcibly held here against his will. Life was just not made to be winnable. Really good food everyday or freedom; you never got both. Taking his first bite out of the dense confectionery, the young man savored it as he chewed ever so slowly. He was pretty sure his green eyes dilated from the sensory overload he was suddenly feeling. Even if he wanted to be depressed, the amount of energy coursing through his veins wouldn't allow it ( ... )

Guy had made it around the field once by the time that he heard Luke calling out for him, though his friend's voice was enough to get him to stop in his tracks. While it was definitely cold out, taking a brisk walk had gotten his blood flowing, so he wasn't too bothered by it ( ... )

"You talked with Tear today?" Well, at least he knew she was alright--Not that he thought anything less from her! She wasn't weak or anything and he wouldn't have let anything... happen... But it was natural to worry about a friend! Looking at the bulletin earlier, Luke thought of asking her personally, but if Guy or Anise saw the message, they could have gotten the wrong idea.

"Yeah, everything went... fine," he confirmed with a reassuring smile. Hopefully it wasn't overly re-assuring. Guy knew him too well to let bullshit slip under his radar. "Oh, and thanks for that sword again! It came in real handy!" He was still alive, so he had to assume it had at the very least. Augh, this whole discussion and side-stepping was hurting his head.

The change in subject was jumped on like a monster on a lone caravan. "Uh, yeah, Anise's been telling me about all of... this." He waved a hand around his surroundings, much to his chagrin. "Apparently, I picked the best time to show up now that there's actual, you know, food. I dunno how you put ( ... )

In response to Luke's first question, Guy only nodded. It was good that he had managed to check up with both of them, though in both cases they had been the ones to find him. Now it was just Natalia who was being scarce, which Guy couldn't help but worry about. Still, she'd seemingly disappeared once and then it had turned out that she was fine, so he wasn't going to jump to conclusions this time ( ... )

"Uhhh, yeah. Nothing I couldn't handle!" Luke lied--Actually, did that count as a lie? Something had to have happened last night and it was likely there were monsters involved if all the blood and gore around him had been any indication. Technically, it must have happened. Phew, his conscience was a lot lighter now.

At the mention of ranking, the young man inwardly groaned for forgetting. On his first day, Guy had eaten an infinitely more appealing lunch than he had been given. Anise may have warned him not to underestimate this Landel guy, but he was at least giving them real food. If he was so evil, wouldn't he have done away with good food altogether? Well, whatever. There was no point in jinxing them all by complaining.

"So we're stuck here for the amusement of someone else. That is so messed up." His green eyes wandered across the field, watching the white women scurrying after patients like mother hens. "Do they actually know? Is it an act or are they just as clueless?

Luke's response wasn't all that convincing, and Guy had to wonder if something had happened. Still, Tear hadn't made any indication of that, and Guy felt that he would have at least been able to trust her to come clean if it was something really serious. In the end, he was just going to have to leave it alone. He had to keep reminding himself that he wasn't Luke's babysitter anymore ( ... )

The very idea made his chest ache. After so much effort, they were starting over from scratch and with very little of the luck and prestige they had picked up along the way. They had been fortunate to have received Ion's blessing, his personal station (more or less) and the friendship of other world leaders. Now, the fon Fabre name meant nothing here. Here, he was insane with no friends to help them on the outside. Guy, Anise, Tear, and he were all alone on a new planet. Well, there was Claude, he supposed. For all he knew, the guy could have a father in all the right places that had his hands in the military and possibly the royal court, but, honestly, how likely was that? Not very, if Luke had any say in it, so they were still at square one.

"And no one's been able to escape? No one?" That just seemed so hard to believe. As hard to believe as being plucked from one planet and placed on another who spoke fonic... Okay, so maybe it was believable that no one had found a way out. But Luke didn't want to think that way! The replica was ( ... )

It wasn't that hard to see that Luke was losing hope with each piece of news that was given to him, and Guy felt guilty for that. It wasn't like he wanted to depress his friend, but he wasn't going to coddle him either. And even if Luke was reacting this way now, Guy was sure that he would come to accept it in time and he'd be able to take his rightful place as leader in the end. It was a large burden to bear, but somehow Luke had ended up with it. The boy of prophecy; the one with the red hair. This wasn't Auldrant, but that wasn't going to stop Luke from being Luke, was it ( ... )

"Oh I guess that's true." It was hard to find evidence of people escaping since, well, they escaped! They weren't going to come back and pass on their heroic story to a wandering patient. They would be gone, never to be seen again or maybe they had compassion enough to try and thwart the hospice from the outside. Either way, it couldn't really hurt to ask around. Rubbing at his jaw, Luke tacked on a note to his brain to put up a bulletin or ask some people he could come to trust about it.

This endeavor might be fruitless, but at least he would be making some kind of progress. The young man had a lot to catch up with, if Guy's admissions to uncovering some basement were anything to go by ( ... )

It was only a matter of time before those questions were going to be asked. Guy tried to think of the best way to phrase it, something that wasn't going to make it seem like the others were being left out. It wasn't like this situation was ideal for him, but there wasn't much they could do to change it now. He just didn't want to get the idea in Luke's head that he needed to race down to deal with the coliseum ( ... )

Okay, Luke was trying to piece this all together as Guy talked. It didn't help that this whole situation was so ridiculous that you couldn't even find edges of logic or common sense to hold onto in order to reach the next step. All his friend's explanation did was uncover even more questions. It all left Luke rather stunned, drained even. Why would this place add challenges that could lead them to freedom, maybe? Was it simply a trap for the unsuspecting or the under experienced ( ... )

That wasn't really the reaction that Guy had wanted. While he couldn't blame Luke for feeling that way, he was going to have to face the reality of it eventually. Everyone did once they had been here long enough, and Luke wouldn't be any exception. The rest of them needed to be able to rely on him, and while Guy had no doubt that Luke would be capable of handling this place once he'd gotten more used to it, he was still so new.

Except this was the fourth time that he'd been new, and so Guy realized that he was being a bit impatient with his friend. Not that he was showing any of that outwardly, but he still felt bad for it.

"Yeah, it is a pain, but it's also the reality of it. You're not dreaming." If Luke couldn't separate the real Guy from some dream version, then what kind of friends were they? He gave his friend his most charming smile and then reached over to clap a hand on his shoulder. It was real, he was real, and while it didn't make sense for Luke to come from essentially sacrificing himself to ending up here, that was ( ... )
