Night 59: Bus Unloading Area

McCoy tsked but stepped back just in case so Spock could do his thing. Lord, Spock was strong. He took the door down as if he was knocking a fly away and with about as much effort too. Seeing Spock nearly go through the door, taken by surprise by his own strength and without quite the same Vulcan grace, washed away the brief uneasiness. ( Read more... )

Although Spock took note of the inappropriate grin that McCoy gave in light of his breaking down the door, the Vulcan didn't immediately comment on it. Instead, he stepped out into the air, taking note of the chilled rain falling from the sky. The temperature was cold even by human standards, but Spock showed no outward signs of discomfort. At any rate, he was more concerned with their surroundings, and whether they were at risk of an ambush. So far, the area appeared clear, but they couldn't expect that to remain so. It would be best to keep their time out here to a minimum ( ... )

He must've imagined the night before. Just as he imagined everything else. Spock wasn't going to fool anyone, least of all the man he'd just had a mind meld with or the effort he'd gone to reassuring and calming him during it. Necessary was going in, out, nothing else, which Spock hadn't exactly done. Spock could say whatever he wanted. He might fool Jim. At this point, in front of McCoy, he was just trying to save face. McCoy just wasn't any good at being a good sport and playing along when it came to Spock, . Besides, he was going to count it a personal best of the week that he'd even gotten Spock to say 'warm and cuddly' in the first place.

"Well, for you, you were as cuddly as a kitten," persisted McCoy. "Heck, I think you might've even done the equivalent of a Vulcan purr." Letting that sink into Spock for a bit, McCoy clasped his hands together and looked out on their current assignment. The force field seemed to extend far across the valley, a pink shimmer of energy that easily covered the hospital grounds and then stretched ( ... )

Spock arched an eyebrow at the comparison. "With your paranoid demeanor last night, one could hardly be led to believe that." The doctor hadn't been in a stable state of mind for much of their time together before the meld, so his recollections of that incident were rather questionable. As that didn't relate to their current situation, however, the Vulcan left it at that for now.

"We would have to survey the force field from all sides of the building to make absolutely certain, but I believe we are unlikely to find a breach in the force field," he stated in response to the doctor's question. "This is probably a good indicator of how far the facility's influence reaches into surrounding areas. Unless we find any other anomalies in the area to investigate, I suggest we report our findings to the captain."

Since Jim did not fall under the institute's target criteria, and he was primarily concerned with verifying Nyota's status, there was a chance they'd both returned to the rendezvous point by now.

That was low Spock. McCoy's mouth closed suddenly, teeth clicking. He didn't even think his Spock would sink to using last night against him in one of their arguments, but at the same time, maybe McCoy had it coming. It did serve to drive in the differences between his Spock and this one. For all his cold logic and pain in the ass, maybe age and experience had done his Spock some good. The doctor folded his arms and gazed out onto the building. The one night McCoy tried to be friendly, some good-matured teasing in there as a way to apologize for how he treated him the past several days, and Spock decides not to pull the punches.

Down to business, McCoy could do that. He turned, pulling the door open for the both. "So rendezvous with Jim then? Then what?"

The Scarecrow recognized the area from the trips to town, though the dim illumination of the moon gave the space a very different feel. His arms pulled themselves around him to protect him from the chill of the night as he listened- no sounds of click-clickers, though he thought he heard something above them. Perhaps a bird, he thought. Nothing too frightening. He was human now, and was sure he'd have a lot more luck scaring crows as one than he ever had as a scarecrow.

He peered through the doorway again, motioning for Seishin to follow. "I've never been out this way at night," he admitted, pushing a foot into the snow. Thankfully, he'd thought to keep his boots on that night.

Seishin felt the cool night air as he followed the other man outside, and he couldn't entirely suppress the shudder that resulted from the drop in temperature. At least the night air appeared to be void of the rot and decay that had plagued the institute's interior, which was a relief ( ... )

"Go back inside?" the Scarecrow questioned automatically. As with every time he'd stepped outside into the snow, he'd found himself transfixed by the sight, the white coating on the ground giving the landscape before them a pristine look, one that didn't at all reflect the dangers that lurked on the building's grounds ( ... )

Westerning-san appeared to be distracted, but before Seishin could say anything else one of the birds had already swooped down on the other man. The former priest let out a gasp, not having expected it to attack so quickly. The bird was gigantic, about twice the size of a fully grown man. They somewhat resembled eagles, though no eagle should have been as large. Its ragged feathers were a sickish grey colour -- the creature looked as though it was dead. Though it had mostly missed its target, Seishin could only watch as its silver talons cut into the other man's arm like a razor. It let out a cry as it recovered its bearings, flapping its strong wings dangerously ( ... )
