Night 59: M71-M80 Hallway

Oct 24, 2011 12:59

Peter lifted his head up to the intercom with a heavy sigh. Aaah, I.R.I.S. His oldest of flames had returned, singing him sweet auto-tuned melodies of emergencies and holy crap souvlaki why was everything in their room suddenly being shot up with Sailor Moon beams ( Read more... )

It all happened so suddenly. One minute, he'd been pushing that nasty pink sludge around his plate, and then suddenly Woody felt like his ears were going to burst open from the sound of a hideous alarm. "Code Red?!" he frantically echoed as he clamped his hands over his ears. Just what did that mean?! It almost reminded Woody of some kind of war movie, but--

"Aahh!" A pink, glowing light rushed into the room, lighting almost everything in sight. Woody tried to pull his long, lean legs into the chair with him, until he was practically perched in his seat. Part of him faintly realized that he looked ridiculous, but who cared!? That stuff was probably dangerous ( ... )

((And back from here.))

As he ran from the...thing making that hissing noise, Woody looked over his shoulder to make sure Mack and the new guy were following close behind. The last thing he needed was for one of them to turn into monster food, because it'd mean Woody would have to throw himself into the fray to save them.

"It's M79," he quickly told them. "Hurry!" Thankfully, just two doors down, and less of a chance to mess up their escape. Since he'd left the door partly open a few minutes ago, it was just a matter of kicking it open with his boot. Good thing, too, because his hands were full from the flashlight and clothes rod.

Intrude? After hearing that, Jesse mouthed the word back to himself and ran a hand over his face. He was stuck in some nightmarish mass murder scene and the first couple of dudes he ran into had to be exceedingly polite about it. It was a relief when the super tall one decided to lead the way to somewhere closer, right back where he'd first woke up, actually, and --

Oh God, what was that?! He jumped and spat out a low curse, spurred by terror into following this new crowd as closely as possible. The one with the flashlight, he was gonna stick to that motherfucker like glue.

That hadn't even sounded human. As short as the distance was, Jesse kept glancing back like he was expecting something to jump them out of nowhere. Something probably would if they stayed out here. Leaving the room wasn't such a good idea after all... but at least he wasn't alone now. They reached M79 and Jesse backed off their tails for a moment, gesturing to the shrieky guy to go in after the leader while he watched their backs ( ... )

"It's a cat. The cats are back!" He knew the sound of their hiss. It was only a matter of time before they came for him again and finished the job they had started several nights ago! Ippo didn't have to be told twice to movie it. He ran slowly--slowly for him--behind Woody and the new patient they had picked up.

When he allowed Ippo in before him, the boxer's automatic reaction was a stuttered,"Th-Thank you" before they all piled in on each other. There was always time for manners, as his mom would say.

Who ever Woody's roommate was, he was no longer in the room. The boxer hoped the person was well-equipped for such a night or else he wouldn't be getting far. It was a terrible thought and it soured his stomach, leaving him doubled over despite his great endurance.

"Should... Should we--That is, can you even lock these doors?" If not, what was going to keep the roving gang of cats between them and the hallway? "Do we need to barricade it?!" Augh, this was all too much to handle at once!

Woody didn't waste any time with moving into the room, and he soon turned to light the way for the two men with him. The safety found in numbers should have felt reassuring, but right then he just wished he had a larger clothes rod on him.

Locking the door sounded like the best solution, but there was one downside to Mack's suggestion. "They're keeping us trapped here, remember? There's no way they'd let us lock it from the inside." Which meant they needed to improvise. Woody let out a heavy breath and placed a hand over his forehead, racking his brain for ideas. "Barricade...barricade...think, think, think--"

Eyes lighting up with an idea, he pointed to Ippo. "Mack, check the desks and see if you can't get them to budge." After that, he nodded toward the stranger. "You can help me get one of the mattresses off the bed. If we can't use the desks in here, that should at least help."

That noise had apparently come from a cat, but he had a hunch that it wasn't the fluffy kitty type of image he was used to conjuring up when he heard that word. Jesse slammed the door shut after them and leaned back against it with all his weight (not much), facing the room, bringing a hand up to his mouth to gnaw on a thumbnail while he tried to calm his mind. The last place he remembered being at was the hospital ( ... )

"On it!" Ippo said with militant precision. He didn't do well amidst chaos, but he sure knew how to take orders. It was just the thing to focus his mind somewhere other than the carnage that coated the entire hallway ( ... )

Woody was glad to see no one had any objections to his idea. While the stranger took one part of the mattress, he walked over to the upper half and pulled the blankets and sheets off. With that done, he grabbed hold of the mattress itself. For a moment, the former toy grappled with the surreal experience of lifting something so large with his own arms, but Woody forced it aside as quickly as it came. With their size and the fact they had two of them doing this, hopefully they'd be able to move it in front of the door.

Mack, meanwhile, didn't seem to have much luck with the desk. Woody suspected as much, seeing how a lot of the furniture in here was bolted down, but it'd been worth a shot. "That's fine. You can help us with the mattress, then," he directed.

He adjusted his grip on the mattress, fingers digging into the fabric, before glancing up at the newcomer and fully registering what he'd said a moment ago. "Zombies!" he echoed with raised eyebrows. He hoped not, because that was the last thing any of them needed right ( ... )

The desk might not have been budging, but the mattress came away easy. They would definitely manage to drag it off the bedframe and towards the door. He paused with two handfuls of bare mattress in order to glance between them both with a confused and perturbed look on his face, because he didn't like the way they'd just assumed he was already a permanent member of the carnage ward.

"Well, I don't think I plan to stay, but yeah," Jesse began. "I can't even remember how I got here. The sirens woke me up, and then ( ... )

Ippo stared at the newly incarcerated patient with pity. He had never bee good at hiding his emotions. They washed across his face as fast he felt them, and so he decided he would be better suited to checking the rest of the furniture in the room, away from both Woody and this stranger before he learned the truth written on his face. There was a lot to talk about and he really didn't want to be the one to start it.

He was ashamed to be so cowardly in a situation that needed everyone's support, but he just... How do you tell someone they would never be able to leave until they were "well" and who the hell knew what these soldiers defined "well" as! All he could do was nod distantly when he was called on, not even aware that the man got his name wrong.

So this guy was new, and he had no idea of how he got here. Woody could sympathize. He remembered how scared he'd been to wake up in one of the beds here, with one of the nurses trying to drag him out of his room. That had been bad enough. What would it have been like to show up in the middle of a mess like thisThe former toy let out a breath as they brought the mattress closer to the door. He let go of his own side, letting it rest in front of the door. While he could have pointed out that technically the kid's name wasn't Mack, Woody didn't bother. It wasn't like he knew how to pronounce his real name, and no one (not even Ippo himself) seemed to particularly care one way or the other ( ... )

... yeah, he didn't like the sudden quiet or those sad-sack expressions he'd caught glimpses of. Jesse was starting to get the feeling that this was something bigger than just one night of sudden chaos and an inexplicable case of amnesia. He fiddled with his too-tight uniform after they set the mattress against the door, popping buttons loose by the collar with a bit of rough handling. Shit, he could count the number of times in his life he'd worn something so restrictive on one hand ( ... )

"Uh, well--!" The words came without warning and Ippo looked to Woody with a sheepish expression. He hadn't meant to butt in if his friend was still talking.

"W-What I was going to say is, they say they'll let us go once we're well, but--" Ippo looked down at the floor and the desk, anywhere but at Jesse. "--I don't know what that entails exactly. When I got here, there were nurses who were trying to help, but then the military came in and..." Well, it all went to shit; Ippo's face said it clearly.

"They are experimenting on us--I don't know why!" He quickly assured the man. "They just... pick some people. Sometimes you can... volunteer..." The words were hard to say, now that he looked back on the stupid things he had done. He had trusted people his friends had told him not to. The boxer had just wanted to get out of here and they had exploited that desperation, warping him with prescription drugs.

"But... I dunno why they do it..."

"Hey, no one said anything about for good," Woody reminded the newcomer, though it was partly for his own peace of his mind. He didn't want to think they'd stay here forever anymore than the next toy -- next person. Whatever.

Still, he couldn't help but look a bit somber when Ippo gave more of an explanation. "Mack's right, though," he added, his voice quiet. "There used to be doctors, and nurses, and--" And experiments too, but it was just too horrifying to say out loud. Woody sighed, shaking his head. "It was basically like a loony bin, yeah, but then these soldier guys showed up. Now it's like we've got this big military operation on our hands."

Woody folded his arms over his chest, thinking back on one of his first conversations with Wally. He'd said he'd been there for 17 days, and at the time Woody could barely even fathom being trapped, lost in a nasty place like this for that long. But now it was difficult for Woody to see any immediate end to this ( ... )

The focus of Jesse's gaze kept jumping from Woody to Mack each time one of them spoke up, betraying just how freaked out he was and was continuing to become. It was a lot of information to take in, and it was some fuckin' insane sounding information at that. A corrupt mental institute and a military take-over and experimentation -- maybe one of Gus' men had captured him and sent him out of the country, to some seedy underground operation like this ( ... )
