And her first reaction, because Wichita was the queen of eloquence, "No way." 'Riverside' was easy enough to recall from the bulletin posts, yeah. Which meant he was actually Jim Kirk, which meant she really need to lock up whatever weird emotional breakdown she was having. She didn't mean to, but her eyes moved to actually take in his shirt, which of course stood out against the sea of blue uniforms she was getting used to seeing everyone wear, but this was different. Gold. It had been years since she watched anything to do with Star Trek, but the color stood out, and the little Starfleet symbol stood out, and she couldn't stop grinning.
This was abso-fucking-lutely ridiculous. She just cried in front of Captain Kirk. A younger, fitter, alright-he's-pretty-much-gorgeous Kirk than she knew from television. Which right now was mortifying, but in the long run it was pretty awesome.
"I was just. Baseball bats, you know." She was completely distracted by the fact that she felt like she should have been more outwardly impressed, but no, she was not going to take a leaf out of Tallahassee's book and gush like a crazed fan. Still, it was very strange. Even after meeting Spider-Man, it seemed the shock value didn't wear off. Still, she realized after a few seconds that her statement sounded vague, and she waved her hand.
"I was gonna go out looking for one, that's all. In the shed, I guess." Well done. Oh, right, yeah. "Cool to meet you, by the way." ... Don't say it. Don't say it. Do not even-- "... Captain."
Kirk laughed. Wichita had shot him down when he'd suggested on the bulletin board that she was another "fan" of his, so he'd been hoping for surprise at most, not... well. No complaints here. It had been entirely too long since the last time a woman had looked at him like that, even if half the reason might have to do more with his name and rank than actual reserves of devastating charm. But why fuss over the details? Ladies love a man in uniform, his mother had joked once, on one of those occasions before she'd given up on trying to get him to join Starfleet. And these things - his name, his rank - were part-and-parcel of who he was now.
This didn't bother him as much as he thought it would. In fact... being called "Captain" by someone not of his crew? It felt pretty nice.
"The pleasure's all mine, miss," Kirk answered with more gentlemanly grace than he usually put on when speaking to ridiculously hot women. He had a reputation to worry about now, and Starfleet to represent. It was a little weird, not quite knowing what these people expected when they found out he was Captain James Kirk. "You're headed out to the Rec Field, huh? Be careful, it's dangerous out there. And... as much as I wish I could keep distracting you from your mission... I have a crew to track down."
Kirk gestured past Wichita with his flashlight, and stepped aside to let her go by.
The shift in the way he held himself was noticeable, but maybe only because she looked for those sort of things. It made her smile anyway, knowing she caused it, bringing up his title and being able to recognize him as more than just another patient here. And hey, brightening someone's day wasn't usually something she went out of her way to do, actually, she usually managed to effortlessly accomplish the exact opposite, but she didn't mind it this time.
"Sure, sure." No sarcasm there, mostly just a weird sort of fascination. It was wild thinking about not just Captain Kirk, but the rest of the Enterprise crew there at the Institute too. Like, she could only ever picture them on the set of the television show. Rather, the bridge of the ship. From the future. Yeah, man, this place must have seemed like an even bigger downer for them than it did for her. They had a lot more differences to adjust to, that sort of thing. Kind of. Actually, the more she thought about it, the less ..cool it seemed, that they were here.
That any of them were.
So she decided to stop thinking about that immediately. Because clearly whatever the hell those 'doctors' shot into her arm was making her a sentimental mess. She didn't care, she couldn't care. Dammit.
"Right, well. Good luck with whatever it is you've got planned. I'm sure I'll see you around, or whatever." She clicked on her flashlight again, hesitating for just a second because was she really just going to walk away instead of asking him all about what it's like in the future and studying at Starfleet and if he knew what all the buttons did on the control panels of a Starship?
Yes. Because that was the cool thing to do. She stepped past him then, only making it a few feet away before she was slowing down to try and tug her map out of her boot as she walked. At first she hopped around a little, though eventually she just dug her toe into the floor and reached into it like that. Gah. Maybe her boot wasn't the best hiding place.
Kirk noticed the little hesitation, because he was standing there, watching her smile, letting himself linger in this pleasant moment in between creepy intercom messages and blood and screaming. He had business to attend to, he knew that. Night-time was the only time they could get anything done, and he needed to gather his crew and assess where they were in their fight to take down the Institute. He'd been A.W.O.L. for over twelve hours, Bones was further fracturing with every passing day, Spock was probably trying his best to keep things together, and Uhura... who knew what was going on with Uhura? Probably thinking to herself how better off they all were with Spock as captain, while secretly worrying about Jim underneath that shell of steely competence.
He wondered what she'd do if he showed up at her door now. Would she hug him? Cry? Punch him? All three? Kirk swung his flashlight back to the narrow corridors of F-Block, already imagining Uhura's tear-filled eyes when she saw him for the first time in... okay, a whole day, but-
Kirk glanced back at Wichita in time to see the awkward but strangely adorable dance she was doing in order to get something out of her boot. He really could just touch base with his crew tomorrow. Maybe even put it off a little just so he could see Uhura's heartfelt reaction anyway. And all three of them could take care of themselves, right? Trained Starfleet officers. Surely they weren't getting into any trouble right now.
