The dinner announcement came as something utterly unexpected. Rather than Harrington's excited tones, the calm accented voice of the General drifted through the intercom speakers

For a moment after Neku entered, Sora thought that his roommate wasn't in the mood to talk. He completely ignored his dinner and just went to put on his headphones. Listening to music usually meant that you wanted to be left alone, right? Sora wasn't about to argue with that, since he realized that everyone needed space sometimes, but then Neku spoke up.
The boy glanced up from his plate of chicken and stared at Neku for a second before sighing. "Not really sure. It can't be good, though. We'll all have to be on guard." It was hard when they didn't know what to be looking for, but the fact that they were prepared for something to be weird at least gave them a foot up.
"But Neku, I wanted to say... thanks for always being willing to do stuff for the club. I've been sending you out with some of the newer members lately, which I hope you're okay with. I just know that you'll take care of them and then you can give me an idea of what their strengths are." It was definitely meant as a compliment; he was in no way trying to shove the newer people off onto the other boy or anything like that. It was a sign of trust.
"I actually met up with that Meekins guy earlier today, but what did you think of him last night?" There was only so much to judge by when they had just been talking in a safe environment like that.
When did they not have to be on guard? Seriously. Neku nodded though, another reminder he needed to be careful. He'd been pretty lucky so far. None of the usual monsters or other stuff since Josh had still been here. Though when Sora started getting all emotional on him, he couldn't help looking intently at his tray of food and turning up the volume on his phones a few decibels. That was so ridiculously sappy and- and... there was no way in hell he was gonna admit that it felt kinda sorta good to hear someone say it.
"It's cool, don't worry about it. I... It's not like I have much better to do, right? And I'd rather be doing something than sitting on my ass waiting to be rescued," he stumbled on his words, trying not to look as shy and embarrassed as he felt at the moment.
"Meekins... he was, he was interesting, that's for sure," Neku was glad to change the subject onto something he could actually talk about. "He follows orders really well. Didn't seem to get scared easy. We tried that medicine, the stuff in the new wing down the hall last night. Mine didn't do anything, but I think that Meekins guy might've got a little paranoid or something. He kept seeing things that weren't there."

The response that Neku gave was pretty modest all things considered, and Sora had to wonder if he'd made him uncomfortable by being so honest. Still, he thought it was important to let people know that they were appreciated and that the work they did and the effort that they put in was noticed. Sora realized that he was just another patient here, but he was technically a club leader too and he wanted to make sure to treat his members well.
Either way, it was good to hear that Neku was still as motivated as he'd been when he first joined. "Yeah, you're right. We all have to do our share."
"Interesting" was a good enough word for Meekins based off of the short conversation that Sora had had with the man. He was surprised to hear that he didn't scare easily, seeing how he'd been so jumpy during their conversation. Maybe he was one of those people who worked well under pressure, though. It was something to keep in mind either way. Though as Neku explained that they'd taken the drugs, Sora's expression fell. He hated to think that any of his club members had felt pressured to try those. "Yeah... he mentioned that he was seeing things. I hope that he'll be okay in the end. It's weird that yours had no effect, though." That almost made Sora more nervous.
