Day 58: Lunch

Aug 25, 2011 11:03

Although it had been good to see his mom again, Claude entered the cafeteria with a dark expression on his face. He was glad she felt comfortable enough with him to share her experiences from last night, but that didn't make him any less angry at the military for using her to do their dirty work. Why couldn't those bastards clean up their own ( Read more... )

People were really piling in by now, but he still wasn't seeing anyone who looked like Serah. He got hopeful for a split second but... it was Lightning. Not Serah. Not that it was bad to see her or anything. From a distance, she looked the same as she always did, but that didn't mean she didn't feel sullen or upset or anything. ...He should probably talk to her. Talk about what they were doing if the note turned up nothing. The concept of approaching Lightning like that was still a little foreign to him, but he wasn't one to let something like that stop him. And anyway, she'd been pretty forthcoming to him. She'd even been worried about him yesterday, now that he thought about it. It was nice. He wanted to be trusted and relied on. Like family. And he definitely trusted her back. So there was no need to even hesitate, right?

But she was talking to someone else now. That Zack guy again, looked like. So he'd hold off for her to be finished and would wait to see how the bulletin board thing turned out first.

Suddenly, his attention was pulled away by another familiar face. One that got Snow breaking out into a huge smile like everything was normal. "Heeey! Uh, yeah. Guess it's been a while, huh? How you been holding up?"

It didn't feel like it had been a while to Snow, honestly. Cause he'd been kind of knocked out for a whole day according to Lightning. So it felt like he'd just seen Izaya yesterday, even if that wasn't right. The guy didn't look any different from when he last saw him either. Which was good. Snow might have felt guilty if Izaya had shown up with his arm in a cast or something.

There was no sudden change in Villier's demeanor, which Izaya took as a good sign. From what he'd learned of Snow thus far, the man was practically an open book; if Mikado had said anything along the lines of warning the man about him, Izaya felt reasonably sure that he would have known right away.

"Good; good..." Izaya answered, a faint smiling coming to his lips. Since he'd last seen Snow he'd both met the intriguing Ippo and found that Mikado was here, so it had been nothing less than a pleasant couple of days, unfulfilled schemes from last night aside. "And you? You didn't check out that drug last night, did you? I've heard bad things about it."

He rather hoped Snow had, if only to hear more bad things about it. As long as he had information about various things that had happened, it eased the sting of not getting to see it himself. And if there was a next time... Well, it never hurt to be prepared for what he'd find. It was certainly better than going into things blindly.

Hee. Seemed like the guy was doing just fine here despite the crazy circumstances. Snow was glad. Cause it could have been a lot worse. Between the soldiers picking on people and monsters wandering around at night and them taking people in for Branding and l'Cie experiments...

...Oh wow. He'd been so caught up in this whole mess of trying to find Serah, he hadn't even thought about everything else that was going on in this place. In fact, he'd practically forgotten. And to think, he'd been knocked out all that time... A whole day. And that was all still going on, wasn't it? Hearing about those things alone was usually enough to get him pissed, but considering it all together? It was kind of a lot to take in.

Luckily, Snow was easily distracted and didn't tend to focus on stuff like that too much. One such distraction would be... um... whatever the hell Izaya just said. At the question, Snow just blinked silently for a heartbeat. It was probably obvious he was lost here.

"A... drug? What drug?" Whatever it was, apparently there was something bad about it.

Snow... didn't know about it?

It was enough to take Izaya by surprise; he'd thought that surely everyone would at least have known it existed, even if they hadn't gone to the medical wing themselves. But-that was wonderful, too! The cluelessness had been unexpected, but it wasn't bad at all! In fact, it was almost refreshing...

"The drug in the infirmary," he explained evenly, lacing his fingers together as he ignored his meal for the time being. "I believe they called it a 'concoction' in last night's announcement, but a drug is a drug no matter what they refer to it as. -Assuming, of course, that it's not actually a 'magic potion'." But even that (if possible) would be a drug, of sorts.

He kept his gaze on Snow as he talked, but he'd caught a glimpse of Mikado out of the corners of his eyes. A quick glimpse to the side after adding the jest was enough to confirm that it had been the boy, and that he was sitting with... That wasn't Ippo, was it?

A drug in the infirmary? A concoction? Snow frowned in contemplation as he mulled this new information over.

"So then, it's something these people... made?" Something they made themselves rather than something you'd buy? Considering the fact that he heard something about l'Cie experiments going on here, it wasn't hard to come to the conclusions that it had something to do with that. And considering Izaya's last words, it seemed like that was all too probable. Izaya seemed to think it wasn't anything like that but that phrase got Snow thinking. He looked down at the table, frowning in contemplation as he repeated the words in a thoughtful murmur. "A 'Magic Potion'?"

It would... make sense! Yeah, there was no such thing as a potion endued with magic. Yet. But it was a fact that people tried to replicate the effects of magic technologically all the time. AMP technology was commonplace and easy to use, but it was still used through use of machines. And it looked like Pulse wasn't all that great when it came to machines.

But if they could make a potion that gave people the power of a l'Cie without actually Branding them... then that would be a hell of a lot faster now wouldn't it?!

"It... It could be," he said, sounding like he'd hit a revelation. He looked up from the table at Izaya, enlightened. "I mean, it's not that out there if ya think about it. It'd make sense. They're already tryin' to 'experiment' on people and stuff as is, right? Maybe they are tryin' to make a Magic Potion!" Dammit... That would really explain the l'Cie experiments a lot! He'd been wondering what the hell they would even want to get out of that. So they were being used as test subjects after all. Bastards!

But there was something else he wasn't getting if that was all true. "But... you said you heard something else bad about it, right? Something besides how they're making it?"

"They said it was under development, so yes, I expect it's something they made themselves," Izaya replied. Aguilar had had a lot to say last night, but very little of it had been about the drug itself... Calling it a 'magic potion' was simply a kind of code for an unknown mixture with mysterious effects, but what were they trying to make?

"The general invited people to come take a dose in exchange for a reward... To become voluntary test subjects, in other words. I spoke with someone earlier who'd decided to volunteer, and it seems the results were... less than pleasant."

And between that and what he'd seen on the board this morning...
