Night 57: X-Ray

[ From here.]The darkness somehow seemed thicker in this room, although Rose did her best to chalk that up to her fears running away with her again, rather than reality. She had to stop a step inside the door, her body refusing to let her go any further as her light swept the inside of the room, taking in a massive table at the center and some piece ( Read more... )

It seemed that despite Rose's fear, she was still able to compose herself enough to lead the way through another set of rooms. Granted, the one they'd entered after that storage room hadn't been very interesting, since it seemed to be meant for the purposes of controlling some sort of machinery. Without knowing how to work it (and even if he had, he had no thumbs right now), there wasn't much point in sticking around; Zack was glad that Rose had just made the executive decision and kept moving straight through ( ... )

While Zack's feral senses may not have found anything in the lower part of the room, the real danger loomed above them, hidden behind the arm of the ceiling-mounted machinery. As Rose's light swept the area, the beam briefly illuminated two creatures which would have preferred to have stayed in the shadows: bats. One let out an audible screech as it skittered into the corner, its eyes following the dog as he searched; it was more frightened than irritated, but would defend itself if need be. The other bat was riled by the invading light and set its sights on the source, hunger its primary motivation to move.

As the creature headed for Rose, its trail along the ceiling was marked by the saliva dripping from its mouth- the spittle fell in long drops to the table below, each drip thicker than the last as it neared its target. It came to a perch just above the frame of the door, waiting for the perfect moment to sink its teeth into the intruder.

Okay, that was not her imagination running away with her, since she could stare at the thing clear as day without it suddenly vanishing into shadows once more. That didn't stop the sudden kick of fear mixed with adrenaline when whatever it was swooped overhead. Clutching her flashlight tightly, Rose darted to the side, several steps away from the doorway, and trained her flashlight beam on the thing that had shrieked. Or at least, she hoped that's what had shrieked. With as dark as the heights of this room seemed to be, there could be things hiding anywhere.

No, she wasn't going to think about that. Better to focus on the thing she could see ( ... )

The sudden shrieking sound caused what fur Zack had left on his rotting body to stand on end. His ears were sensitive, just like his eyes, and that noise felt like it hit him in his very core. Luckily it passed soon after that, causing his mind to clear as he tried to locate the source of that sound. As it turned out, it belonged to a bat that -- like him -- was far larger than it should have been and clearly decaying.

Not good. Zack was a fighter -- a soldier -- but he was used to swinging around a sword, not clawing and scratching. He realized it was probably intuitive to an extent, but the idea of tearing into one of those things with his mouth was almost enough to turn his stomach ( ... )
