Night 57: Main Hallway, 2-West

[From here.]Was it just him, or was it a ghost town up here? Not literally, hopefully, but the point still stood. Peter didn't hear any voices in the distance and didn't spot any stray flashlight beams in any direction ( Read more... )

There was no one in the hall when he and Peter emerged from the stairwell, which put Firo on edge. Was everyone else who'd left their rooms tonight simply elsewhere (such as checking out the medical wing), or was there a different reason that the hallway was so abandoned? He couldn't smell blood, at least, but that didn't mean that there was nothing lurking in the shadows...

He nodded when Peter gestured to the left, and kept close as they continued down the hall. Dexter, at least, had proven capable enough to survive the surprise attack from the cats, but he had no indication of how well Peter could handle himself-just that he'd been a nurse before winding up here. The fact that Peter had been in a wheelchair just a few days ago didn't do much to bolster his confidence in the other's fighting skills.

For the moment, it seemed quiet enough that a question might not hurt. "So how often do they take people in for experiments?"

As things were, the only option they had was to keep moving. Peter realized that the fact that their path was so clear should be a good thing, but it was never too late for something to ambush them. It had been in the hallway after this that he and Claire had been assaulted by those hallucinations, right? He knew that things like that generally shifted around across the building, but he couldn't help but be nervous ( ... )

Well, looked like they were still the only ones going this way, aside from the other two men that he'd seen also going up the stairs. It looked like they might be headed to the same place too, judging by the direction that the older man was heading in. Did they also have someone who'd been taken in for experimentation? No shortage of allies in unexpected places here...

"Okay, seems like we're in the clear for now," Niikura said tersely as he scanned the hall with his flashlight. "I've actually never been on the second floor before so...guess we gotta be extra careful 'cause I've got no idea what's around here."

Sesshoumaru looked mildly contemptuous as he looked around himself, either at the surroundings or at Niikura's words, though which he seemed so scornful of wasn't quite clear. Perhaps it was both. He was, after all, so arrogant.

There were people up here still, and Sesshoumaru spared them some attention. They did not, however, seem as though they were a threat, and were therefor currently beneath his notice, until (and if) the proved they merited it. He paid attention to other things the walls and the floor, the dark expanse of the hallway stretching, cold and hungry. It was a curious sensation, and an annoying one. The biting sting of whatever scent it was pricked at his nose again with greater force.

Sesshoumaru looked at Niikura for a moment, and followed after him. He was for now a guide, though a poor one if he had never been here. It didn't matter, perhaps.

Was he tensing? Oh man, no way was that happening...but it was true. There was something chilling about the unknown- in fact, Niikura had very little experience with the unknown. As Akumetsu, he'd nearly always been perfectly in control of the situation; even when he'd been called upon to improvise, there'd always been something he could make use of, or someone else, another him, who could pick up the reins and save the day. Here, though, it was just him...

It was a kind of exhilarating feeling, absolute nervousness. He hadn't felt it in a while, now that he thought about it.

"So nothing else's really hangin' around, huh? Other than those guys," Niikura asked, jerking his head in the direction of the two other men in the hallway. He was really playing with fire here; those kinds of assertions always got proven false in five seconds or so.

Sesshoumaru was not often afraid - fear was an emotion for lesser creatures, and as a result he could probably count on one hand the number of times that he had been made afraid or even truly nervous since reaching maturity. Why should he fear when he was the only thing worth fearing? He was weaker here, but still himself - besides which the arrogant patterns of the centuries had long since settled into his bones. It would take more than this to change that.

Sesshoumaru glanced over at the other, his temporary companion, at his question. His eyes narrowed slightly. "Hn." Scents overlapped here, but the disinfectant burned his nose when he focused too hard and his head shot with pain that was settling into a distant, steady, throbbing ache which he had no desire to further feed. If these two were not all, if there were others who were hostile, than they would be... dealt with.

Another empty hall. Ippo's floppy ears turned to pick up any sound, but there was just silence. He let out a phlegmy sigh of relief. The last thing he wanted was to be spotted in such a state of horror.

Absently, he shook out another one of his legs to dislodge extra blood clinging to him. The dark fluid spattered across the tile like a fallen paintbrush and Ippo averted his terrible eyes from his macabre work. Those mad eyes inevitably landed expectantly on Badd for the next step since he was the one with a map.

Badd was trying not to look behind him. Just because he cognitively knew that his companion wasn't flinging blood all over the place didn't mean his stomach wasn't reflexively convulsing in disgust at the sight of him.

Two corridors. Nothing to completely distinguish them, either. Badd took the one on the far end (it meant he didn't have to turn around and look at the bleeding goat) and tried the first door, finding it to be as firm as a second wall. The next one, however, proved a little more promising.

Badd rammed himself into the door, police-style, trying to break it down. It shook but his own weight wasn't enough to do the job. Badd scowled, then turned back to his ovine partner. Not going to wince. It was just a kid in a hallucinogen suit. Just a kid.

"You think you can help me out with this? You looked pretty strong before the drugs kicked in. If we both hit it at once it might give." Badd moved over to give the kid some room. It was only coincidence that it was enough room for a bleeding goat rather than a human.

It was really hard to narrow sheep eyes. The man would simply have to endure the unblinking stare of a mad ram for that terrible suggestion. Oh sure, Badd tried to sugar coat it, but Ippo knew! He knew what the man had meant! Even still sore, the boxer at least appreciated being of some kind of use now that he couldn't communicate or help with this search very efficiently. Even if it was ramming head first into things. Man, wasn't that just the story of his life ( ... )
