Night 57: Stairwell by Waiting Room/Lobby 1

[From here.]It looked like they had the stairs to themselves, although the narrow space and the memories associated with it meant that Peter would have preferred to have the comfort of knowing that other people were also climbing them. Still, it wasn't like it was a long way up, and so he could be rid of the unfortunate association that he had soon ( Read more... )

It didn't seem like there were too many people on the stairs, which was a good and a bad thing. Good because it meant less traffic to navigate. Bad because it made him a more obvious target, and the last thing Niikura wanted to do (as he kept reminding himself every night) was get himself into a long, drawn-out fight.

But maybe that would be where Sesshoumaru would come in. Unlike the lawyers from last night, he could actually fight. Assuming he decided to bother fighting. Or even coming along in the first place.

...there was always some stupid catch, wasn't there?

Niikura glanced casually over his shoulder to check to see if he did indeed have a dog demon following him up the stairs. "Well, how about these stairs, huh? Let me know if you, y'know, smell anything suspicious."

Sesshoumaru had never been given to displays of philanthropy - he did as he pleased, and killed or spared those around him as it pleased him to do so. Saving or protecting others was, with rare exception, not a typical goal of his. He certainly did not go out of his way to save random strangers. However, he was perfectly willing to go out of his way to kill others who had inconvenienced him, as had clearly been done here - therefore, it was hardly unusual that he should move towards finding the doctors ( ... )

[apologies for the repost!]

So...did that answer mean "No, it's unlikely that I will tell you if I smell something" or "No, it's unlikely that I will smell anything suspicious"? Niikura was pinning his hopes on the latter; the former interpretation meant that he was screwed--okay, that was probably exaggerating. He would just have a harder time than he could have.

Ah, well, nothing to do but keep moving forward. "Really?" He shrugged. "Okay."

Firo didn't think of himself as a particularly imaginative person, but no amount of imagination could make 'glorified torture' sound like it was a good thing. As far as he was aware, none of the prisoners here deserved it-and even if maybe one or two did, he didn't personally bear them any ill will. Thus it was with a nod and a grim expression that Firo followed Peter into the stairwell.

The going was quiet at first, but then Peter broke the silence with a question. Firo looked up to see the other man ahead of him on the stairs.

"Ah... yes, I have," he answered. "This morning, I was taken up to the chapel." It had been without his consent, but meeting Battler there hadn't been too bad, at least. "I haven't come up here at night yet, though."

Of course, the chapel. It was the one time they were allowed upstairs during the day, so it was good that Firo had already gotten some idea of what to expect. There was much more of the second floor to be seen than just that, of course. Firo would do well to know where people were taken for experiments, just in case a friend of his was ever unfortunate to get picked.

"All right," Peter responded as he reached the top of the stairs. "The hallway we're heading for is kind of in the opposite direction -- you'll see."

He would have felt more comfortable if he'd had another trained healer with him, or even Claire with her miracle blood, but he wasn't alone and that was what mattered. Peter quietly moved them out into the main hallway of the second floor.
