The moment they stepped inside, a wall of cold, damp air greeted them. Claude shivered as a small chill shot down his spine. It almost felt like some of the caves he'd visited during his travels on Expel and Nede, except, instead of hard rock, he felt his feet sink into soft, sandy ground. He had to admit this wasn't what he'd been expecting. Then again, he'd most certainly found himself in stranger places.
Something about the area didn't seem quite right, though. He didn't have his own flashlight on him, or else he would have immediately swiped it across the area. But an odd sight did catch Claude's eye -- a pair of burning torches, their warm glow a sharp contrast to their cool and dark surroundings. He had to wonder if someone had been down here to light them. Or did someone in the institute manually control all that?
The flickering flames illuminated a small portion of the beach, but not much. Still, Claude thought he could catch glimpses of different shapes scattered across the sand. What was that about?
"We might not be the only ones here," he murmured. "Let's stay alert." Glancing over to Guy, he added, "Since you have the larger light, maybe you should lead the way for now. Anise and I will keep an eye out."
That wasn't his strongest suit, but Claude didn't want to accidentally lead his friends into a trap because he wasn't properly equipped, either. "I kind of want to check out that light over there," he said. "What about you guys?"
