Day 57: Intercom, Dawn

Jun 22, 2011 00:59

As the sun rose over the valley, it became obvious that the snow had finally stopped. Despite the below-freezing temperature, the skies were as clear as those in summer. As such, the Head Doctor sounded practically relieved when the jingle came on and he spoke to the patient body ( Read more... )

Rose didn't remember falling asleep.  It wasn't an unusual occurrence, but what was stranger was her dreams.  To be precise, the lack of them, at least that she could remember.  Books talked of dreams like being steeped in the howls of fifty thousand imaginary spawn of a dark realm, who would slither back into their elusive Laura at dawn's first cuss, leaving behind a fragment of truth that could only be assembled by a true scholar.  Rose had never quite understood this.  Her dream denizens were a known quantity, and their mission simple.  Rose was simply the worthy audience.

Now she was awake, with vague images of places that no longer existed sinking into a blur, and it made her uneasy.  And how had she made it back here?  They'd been fighting, and then a voice had spoken. She'd heard it before -- The Eagle!  And what had happened to Lily?  Was she ok?  Rose sat up.  There she was, on the other bed ( ... )

Lily didn't remember falling asleep either, though unlike Rose, she remembered her dreams. Not bad, surprisingly, but a comfort wrapped around a deeper sadness, a solitude. Before she'd fully regained consciousness, her hand moved to her throat, aware of the loss. So soft, except for the ragged white scar tracing her spine. Her body knew no other scars...it was like Einstürzen had dragged sharp claws down her back before she knew how to heal ( ... )

"It's a room where people indulge in self- delusion."  There might be clues there, buried in the iconographic rites of this baroque scenario, but she wasn't sure.  The bulletin board sounded more promising, and while the announcement merely implied a relation between the two, it seemed a better option.

In the continued absence of any computing power whatsoever, the bulletin would have to do.

"We'll go to the Sun Room.  Please, lead the way."  Regaining the upper hand, and thus their freedom, would be difficult, but was not the only way to gain the upper hand.  By preemptively asking the NPC to lead them, she maintained the illusion of control.

At the sound of someone barking at him (but, like, muffled, the way it was when some sonofabitch with a gun shot you and you were halfway to passing out. Was that too specific? Maybe that was too specific), Harry groaned, rolled over, and promptly knocked his face against something metallic.

"Ow, fuck-"

Apparently, he'd turned a full ninety degrees in the times between 1 am and...whatever AM it was now? Maybe it was PM already, but he was pretty sure he hadn't slept that much and.

Wait, that wasn't right. Since when-?

He sat up. This wasn't his bed. Why was this not his bed? See, it would've been less of a question if he'd gone out last night, but he actually hadn't. He'd just watched infomercials and then gone to bed. And there might've been a Hustler spread between the infomercial part and the bed part-but anyway, back to...the person yelling at him. Why was he even...

"Jesus, guys, what the hell is going onThe man gave him a flat stare ( ... )

If you were to question him on his outlook prior to this moment, he would have said, in not so many words, something of hopeful. Things were shifting, changing to reflect beliefs, and things were calming down just the same. Life had flowed back into something sedate, despite the changes put towards it, and Mikado was only willing to allow that, at the moment. Izaya's words were in his mind, but currently ( ... )
