"Through the stairs, and then down a hallway," Maya said as she continued, then glanced back to see if Arthur was following. "These stairs-"
Or...not. Where had the stairs gone? Trick of the light, perhaps. Flashlight light; she'd walked right past the stairs when the beam of her flashlight had been aimed elsewhere. Of course the

Lunge had told Mello the radio host was Doyle, and Lamperouge's notes, in the journal Mello had appropriated after his 'release,' had taken that fact for granted. Was this common knowledge in the current prisoner population? Mello had largely abandoned the Doyleton line of inquiry in recent days, having much more immediate things with which to concern himself. Going back over what he'd learnt would be called for, later, if the doors downstairs being unlocked now, in whatever way they had been, represented another expansion of the territory the prisoners were 'allowed' to access.
"I've been wanting a look at those files myself." He'd tried to get Weaver to tell him what was in his, assuming these were the same files the daytime doctors had access to, and it had been lies, had mentioned his parents, for god's sake; but the need to know exactly what they knew, however obfuscated by the lies, was irresistible. And if they were rather more useful files, so much the better. He doubted that was the case, though he was sure ( ... )

The closer stairwell seemed as good as any; Lana stuck her head inside. Two voices, chatting calmly, rang down from near the top. She opened it the rest of the way, and held it for the other two. "Through here, I think."

"So you've been up this way?" he asked as they moved into the next hallway. He had to satisfy his curiosity now that they were drawing closer. Did Gamzee need Ritsuka to lead him? Or could he set off on his own for a bit when they were upstairs? He needed to get a few more supplies for tomorrow and he wanted to raid another closet for batteries, too.
He always felt a bit guilty after stealing things from the boxes. There was still no evidence that the people the fake names belonged to weren't real. What if Jordan Becker was a real person and Ritsuka had replaced him somehow? He'd been hearing stirrings of different theories around the Institute and he didn't like any of them. What happened to people when they left here? What happened to the lives they left behind? There weren't enough answers for anything except for what was right in front of their face, and even those were unsatisfactory. So he had to settle for smaller things. Such as: "Have you been to the possessions room before?"

He just wasn't sure what the room had been called.
> Gamzee: Ascend stairs again.

As expected, Ippo seemed glad to go, which eased Rapunzel's mind somewhat. She had to wonder exactly what he was thinking on that front, though; what did the greenhouse being "nice" have to do with anything?
As they moved out, nothing seemed immediately dangerous. Good, they could keep moving quickly, then. "There should be a way out down this way," she said, indicating a left turn further down the hall.

Huh. Well, he hadn't known what was past the sun room, but now was as good as ever a time to find out. No one had given him a map or anything, and he didn't even know if one was available to the patient body. Wouldn't make sense to him, but considering the weird practice of letting everyone run around in the first place... might be a few. He could always ask on the board or something, right?
For now, it was time to make his own. A asylum, as far as he knew, would probably be symmetrical. Kind of like hospitals, right? Left and right wing? They weren't all built the same, of course, but it was a nice assumption to go on. It sure would make navigating a hell of a lot easier. He wasn't counting on his good luck to start now, though. Good luck wasn't usually foretold with being kidnapped.
It was something to consider, though. Like on the other side of this hallway, there was a stairwell clearly going up to the second floor.
Might as well.
