Night 56: West Wing, Hall 2-A

Voices straight to the right was a good reason not to go down that way, so Damon went up ahead instead. He didn't feel like having their breathing, the rhythm of their hearts, fading in and out like a radio out of range. It made for a hell of a distraction that he didn't need.

He strode on without looking over at Stefan. "Technically," he said. "It's not exactly the National Geographic World Atlas." In fact, there were more blank spaces on it than on Stefan's school attendance record. He wasn't going to deny that it wasn't better than nothing, but better than nothing didn't always mean useful.

His gaze flicked over the doors as they walked past. Library, restrooms-nothing worth opening the door to. It would be nice if he knew offhand where to go, but unfortunately, he didn't. So they were going to have to take the long way around to do this, and while he knew it wasn't what Stefan had expected, it wasn't as though his little brother had any brighter ideas. Or any ideas, period, it seemed.

Except chasing ghosts away using the power of a battery-operated flashlight.

"The sharpest thing in the kitchen last night was a plastic spork," he continued. "So I'm assuming they make a point of moving anything with an edge off the first floor. We just have to find where."

That map had been useful in identifying most of the rooms on the first floor, thereby making it very obvious that unless there was a secret stash of paring knives between the stack of Stephen King in the library, everything was moved far out of the hands of institute residents.

More of an obstacle course, really, than any real attempt to keep them out. He didn't like the idea of playing into it, but it wasn't as if they had any other options. If they did, he wouldn't be here. Anyway, if they ran short on time, they could always split up and cover more ground that way. Honestly, if it hadn't been for Edward showing up two mornings ago looking like the poster boy for drinking and driving, he would've split up from the start. As it was, he needed Stefan in one piece and he'd prefer to stay in one piece himself. Hence.
