"I'm all right," he answered after a moment. "Don't worry." Then, he slowly pushed himself to a stand, careful not to move too fast. As long as they didn't do anymore running right away, then Claude thought he'd be all right.
He had to admit he was curious to know what route Anise had in mind for them. If it didn't involve making their way through the dark woods, though, he was definitely in favor of it. Claude turned to look at the girl, intent on listening to what she had to say.

The maneuver had been a bit of showing off -- they didn't know where their brainwashed compatriot had gone to, and he could have anticipated them. So Taura threw a little strength into psychological warfare. As she vaulted the wall, she took a careful hold, and paused in a pike position any gymnast or dancer would envy. She made it look effortless, which it almost was; trying not to cough was the hardest part. She held it just long enough for some of the snow she'd dislodged to drop. It fell with a soft thump only very good ears would notice; the drop wasn't any further on the other side, even if she couldn't quite make out the ground. She restarted the motion as abruptly as unpausing a holovid and launched herself into the blurry darkness ( ... )

"Sure..." Asuka croaked once she got her coughing under control. She couldn't recall where the weapon had landed, but it couldn't have gotten far.
Human, she heard the condescending word in her mind. She was human and damned proud of it! She may be only one, small, and flawed but she destroyed freaks of nature every day after school! Asuka had nothing to be ashamed of. Nothing ( ... )

"All I know was that Marc was holed up somewhere to the north. That way," Taura added, pointing. Yellow eyes squinted into the snow in the same direction, but the visibility was awful. About the best that she could say was that the moonlight was pretty bright. "I've never been out here, so your guess is as good as mine from here out."
She could think of worse scouting conditions. Maybe. Buried in hostile territory, no map, not even a well-defined objective, and while the snow was some cover, they were starting from a well-known position. Miles, help! Lost causes are your department,! At least she could laugh at herself -- just the thought seemed to add a degree or two to the temperature ( ... )

Now that she was back on her feet and her adrenaline had faded, the eva pilot felt like someone had just been, well, thrown to the hard ground. The bump on the back of her head was a center of pain that throbbed in time with her heartbeat. This was no longer fun--actually, it stopped being fun when a tentacle grabbed her and tossed her in the air. Her capacity for humor at this point was dwindling fast. That usual arrogance that touched her features had made room for the irritation she felt.
"North then. Let's go," Asuka said stiffly, despite Taura's having already started the trek through snow. It needed to be said for her own good. Taura needed to know the second child was on this, whatever that entailed.

It was fortunate there was a layer of snow to cushion the the fall from the wall as the Scarecrow's boot slipped immediately on touchdown, resulting in a solid landing on his backside. He got to his feet quickly, a little surprised by how the damp snow felt against his rear.
He had to admit that the institute looked so different from the outside, especially on a side he'd not seen before. Though the snow smoothed the landscape, he could make out trees and hills in the distance. Were there other buildings out there? Or another city? There was no road to follow- it was a little disorienting.
"Well, here we are," the Scarecrow said with a little bounce, eager to get moving. "Which way now?"

He fished the flashlight out of his pants and tapped the end thoughtfully against his lips. "I guess away from the institute?" he offered, very unsure of himself. He was supposed to be leader here but he had no idea where they were going.
Oh, well. Did it even matter? They'd be taken back to the institute in the morning anyway, so wherever they went they wouldn't be stuck there. Carter rubbed one hand against his arm, trying to ward off cold, and set out into the snow. Maybe they'd find the road eventually.

The Scarecrow felt odd now that he'd lost his flashlight, leaving him empty-handed. He felt in his pocket with his better hand, retrieving the watch after a moment of fumbling idly. Holding the piece to his ear, he could barely make out the soft ticks from the moving hands over the crunching of their boots in the snow ( ... )

Even the crunch of his own footsteps scared Carter and he kept looking from side to side, hyperaware of even the smallest of noises. If there were rats in a city, where you expected rats, what kind of monsters were out in the countryside? Even bigger ones. There could be poisonous pumas out here, or wolves the size of elephants, or killer moose. A little old crowbar probably couldn't take down a moose.
"Here. Hold the flashlight, okay? I might need both hands if something attacks." He handed his light off to Scarecrow.
