Such as the one she first saw when she stepped out of the lunch line, blinking a bit in utter shock. Gigantic coat? Huge hat? Jewelry that went far beyond the bounds of taste or fashion? Whoever had it was either the victim of terrible fortune, or was truly audacious ( ... )

A child, in other words. A starting point, but perhaps not one worth the effort of reaching.
"I am called Nu Zhi here," she answered calmly, wondering what sort of meat the staff was using. Human? Animal? It didn't matter, so long as she obtained sustinence, but somehow she was reminded of some of the events in her past. "And I am well aware that you had no choice in the matter. Or... perhaps you did."
She leaned forward, neither taunting nor conciliatory, merely calm and expressionless. "You gave in to their will in the end, did you not?"

Not without someone like Ling with him.
"However... you are not like them, remember?" The woman's voice was calm, gazing into those inhuman eyes with curiosity. A spirit, perhaps? A possession? Or something else entirely? Her interest was piqued, at least. "What do I, or you, care about them? Rather, is it not a matter of concern for both of us, that you are treated in such a manner?"
"...besides," she said after a moment, "as I mentioned, it is your strength that I wish to speak of. Thus far, I have been exceedingly disappointed with those I have met." A bit of a lie, as two of the ones she'd met had fascinated her, and one had grabbed her attention like nothing else... but Kadaj hardly needed to know that.

"That is the difference between you and 'Cloud,' as he has been called. You mentioned that he interfered, and yet he perished because he lost his will. You, however, yet have that will; in time, your power shall return, or you shall find some other source. Such is the way of things."
She looked into those eyes, wondering if he truly was worth this effort or not. If he was inhuman, then he might be a worthwhile investment, but on the other hand... "...have you ever been told the story of the Pilgrim's Rest Inn?"

"I'm not sure if you would believe me or not. I have command over life and can deny death to whom I would prefer to stay alive; compared to that, what else would I care about?"
She said this completely nonchalantly, as though mentioning her ability with the zither or her extensive knowledge of acupuncture. For her, it was no longer really a novelty; and as such, she fully expected Kadaj to reject it. In this case, bluntness truly was the best course of action; if he rejected it, then he was weak and deserved no further consideration. A pity that would be, but not one she'd be surprised with.
