Nightshift 55: M-B Block Hallway

[From here.]It felt good to not be a useless lump of wounded-ness. Peter stretched his shoulder a bit, lifting and rotating. Not even a twinge left behind. Nice. Better than nice. If he could take just one thing home from this whole mess of terror and insanity, it would be the healing rate. Maybe it would peg him as a mutant-thing when his ( Read more... )

It was usually around here that Claude would find him, and so Guy decided not to race right for the door. It seemed easier to just meet here, since it wasn't as if having Claude with him made the trip any slower. Besides, wandering around alone -- even around the relatively safe areas -- wasn't much fun. It was too dark or too quiet, with too many flashlight beams showing from here or there.

Also, there was no guarantee that something strange wouldn't be happening tonight, especially if they were being watched and tested. It was best to stick together, and he hoped that Anise would watch herself as well. He was still riding out the relief that had come when he'd realized her memory loss had been temporary.

Drawing closer to the wall, Guy kept his eyes on the hall that Claude would be coming from.

[For Claude!]

The trip wasn't far, which was one reason why Claude had requested that they meet closer to their rooms than further out. He'd had no way of knowing this at the time, but less distance also meant less time to beat himself up over what happened during dinner.

When he caught sight of Guy's familiar form in the dark, Claude quickened his pace to meet him. It was still kind of strange to see him in those clothes as opposed to the old Landel's uniform, but he also realized this was likely the way most of his Auldrant friends best remembered him.

"Hey," he murmured. Though he was glad to see him, it was too difficult to muster a smile at that moment. "You ready?"

Claude showed up like clockwork, never making him wait long, and yet Guy knew almost immediately that something was wrong. He was good at gaging people's moods, for one thing, and he'd also gotten to know Claude rather well over the past few weeks. The question was whether or not his friend wanted to be asked about it, but they had agreed to be open with one another, right?

"Yeah," he said first and foremost as he pushed away from the wall, noticing that Claude also had all of his items. It seemed that getting them taken had been a false alarm overall, then.

"Are you all right, though?" If something was going on, he wanted to get it resolved right away so that they could take on the rest of the night without dwelling on it. He didn't know if whatever was going on would be that easy to solve, but he still wanted to be made aware of it.

"Yeah, I'm fine," he quickly answered. Then he shook his head and added with a heavy voice, "Sorry, it's just...they took Mason for those damn 'sleep studies' again." Having to watch him get dragged off once had been bad enough, and yet they'd come a second time tonight. That was three times within the span of less than a week that they'd come to M44. What were they going to do to Mason now? And would they ever find a way to stop those guys from hauling anyone upstairs? No one deserved to go through that ( ... )
