Day 54: Intercom, Noon

Jan 24, 2011 06:05

After the whole debacle in the cafeteria and the subsequent methods that the soldiers had used to keep the patients in line, it was no wonder that the Head Doctor sounded grim and terse as he finally returned to his usual station during the current intercom announcement ( Read more... )

So being told he was insane was really the least of his worries. (Or having it implied, anyway. At least the nurse was kind enough to not tell him he was crazy to his face.)

The smiley face shirt wasn't the biggest problem either, even if he was currently trying to process everything while holding out his shift in front of him, staring at the upside-down grin. It looked a little more like a smirk to him, the soft crescent tilted to one side of the yellow face. That was just a little salt in the wound: a wound that was shaped like four white walls splashed completely with pristine white paint, a wound that smelled like bleach and that looked like a small female nurse smiling down at him, hugging a clipboard to her chest and looking altogether too patient for how slow he was moving. Or really not moving at all. She'd probably done this thing loads of times, though there was probably a lot less amnesia involved.

"So... Landel's Institute?"

She nodded. "Yes, Mr. Becker."

And wrong paperwork. German, baker. Or Middle German. Goblet. "Becker? Who said my name was Becker?"

Again with the patient smile. "Your wife, of course."

If he had expected anything, it wasn't a mention of her. His eyes went wide, his voice soft. "Isobel?"

The smile vanished. "No, Mr. Becker. Your real wife." She emphasized the word real as if to add further commentary on the state of his mental condition. Waking up in a room he didn't recognize after having last fallen asleep on the crappy bed in his apartment hadn't exactly helped ease him into a good state of mind. Alaric thought he was doing pretty well considering how calm he was taking it.

"Okay."

"Okay?" The nurse apparently didn't know what to do with that response.

"Yeah. Okay." There wasn't any sarcasm or disbelief in his voice, which might have explained why she was willing to be so patient.

She seemed to take that as acceptance, so she continued: "Well, let's go ahead and introduce you to more of the hospital, okay? Lunch is being served now and I think you'll find it quite delicious."
