Nightshift 23: Second Floor, hallway containing disciplinary therapy rooms and nurse station

[From here!]

The lock to the smaller hallway's door had burst. The door had slammed open. And Ashton had crept in, signaling to Xigbar and Naminé behind him with the end of a long metal ladle, gripping the other one tightly, ready to attack with his makeshift weapons if need be.

He didn't see anything yet, but that didn't mean that something wasn ( Read more... )

The moment the battle started, Naminé knew she had to leave, and leave she did. But her escape was thwarted when the little girl (it was a little girl! Naminé was not used to seeing others younger than her and it was a bit surprising to hear the girl's voice) called out her name and the hallway doors closed in response, suddenly locking her in the hallway.

No... No! Naminé panicked for a short moment, not expecting there to be a sudden intrusion. Would she have to fight? The girl was standing now, but she was still on the opposite side of the room. Naminé clutched onto her flashlights, the only defense she had against the monsters in the room.

But before Naminé could react properly, the door burst open again, almost hitting her. A man barged in; was he a friend? He was wearing the Landel's uniform and Naminé did not know if he was supposed to be here for Axel or if he was with someone else, but it was reassuring enough for her.

The Witch almost stopped to thank the strange man who had just freed her from possible death, but there was no time for that. Instead, Naminé backed out, barely out of the room and watching. Her job was simply to stay away for now.

Taunting.. he was taunting her! Manah stared, hands drawn into fists. How dare someone, someone that wasn't worth her attention, mock her! The Gods, they wouldn't allow that, right? Mocking her was like mocking the Gods, so they had to act. They had to do something! Didn't they..? For a moment, Manah doubted, but it was only one.

The pawns would do that work for her, that's what they were there for. They had to protect her, didn't they? That was their duty, that was their calling. Though that likely wasn't really what they were meant for (just like she had ignored them, they had ignored her), it was enough to cause Manah's face to slip back into that "innocent" smile of hers. They really were watching~

Not that she could completely celebrate now! Her attention turned to the doorway and soon enough someone burst through it. She giggled at the way the blonde from before reacted, clapping her hands behind her back as she did so. "Oh!" It was all she said for the moment, taking a step and returning to her swaying. This was another one that the Gods sent for her, right? Just for her~ They were new, and so she would be able to play with them too! But not kill, she wasn't supposed to kill anyone. Though she could tell, he wouldn't give up as easily as Naminé would have.

"Naminé and David," Suddenly she paused, tilting her head to the side and pressing together her lips. "You can still turn back now, you know! Manah doesn't mind because Little Manah doesn't want to hurt you." She extended both her arms. "We can be friends, all you have to do is embrace the Gods! If you love the Gods, Little Manah will help!"

Naminé was not sure how to respond to this little girl. She seemed so innocently carefree, it was difficult for her to tell if the girl was just acting or if she truly thought that she was in the service of the Gods. Was she a brainwashed patient or a monster with a childlike form?

"... I have to help Axel," Naminé answered, shaking her head. No, she couldn't let this little girl get the better of her. Naminé had enough sense to know that Manah was not on their side, although it disturbed her to see a child so gleeful while a fight was going on the other side of the room.

But Naminé did not make a move. She did not know the extent of Manah's power and didn't want to risk getting injured. Weren't appearences decieving.

The other man (David?) didn't seem to make a move either. Did he know Manah? She wanted to ask, but at the same time... The nurse was dead and the other monster was relentlessly attacking the wall. Naminé had to get through.

"I... I need to get past. Please, let me through," Naminé quietly asked.

The response given by Snake, or David, wasn't the one she wanted to hear. But it had been something she expected, after all, not many people here would allow themselves to be taken over by the Watchers. Not a smart option, she'd even offered to help! Still, she wasn't supposed to change anyone's heart; she wasn't supposed to give them any power unless they devoted themselves to them.

That didn't mean she wouldn't listen to what was being said though. The gods, they could be merciful too, couldn't they? Manah closed her eyes, drawing her attention upward as she considered. Each of them fought for the same person, that "Axel." Their thoughts all called out for him, almost as one, and she wondered if relenting to their love would really be that bad. He was already lost, perhaps as lost as she was once, which meant he was in need of their love. In need of them?

Maybe they all were.

Manah, for the first time since she'd removed herself from the wall, showed the uncertainty of a six-year-old. "You'll save him, you'll save him from hurting?" It wasn't just directed to Naminé, but to Xigbar and Ashton as well. Not that the answer mattered - especially since they'd already all stated it - she already knew. But if she let them through, it would be hesitantly, for she didn't know if anyone other than the Gods could handle giving that satisfication.

She didn't take much longer to return to her normal self, thrusting open the door to the second room with a mental call. "Only Naminé may enter." The other motives.. she didn't like them. Wanting to be a hero..? There was no such thing, there could be no Little Hero. Time, chaos, the course of events, they couldn't be stopped like that. So he wasn't allowed.

"But no one else," She tagged that on as an after-thought, clasping her hands behind her back. "They have to stay."

The Witch did not expect Manah to actually relent and allow her passage to where Axel was being held (if that truly was the room). But Manah was acting quite strange, like she was actually giving the question thought. Was it because Manah had been somehow moved by their determination, or because Manah knew something that they didn't...

But Naminé knew she had to take the chance. 'David' spoke to her, instructing her on what to do. Although Naminé didn't know the man and she did not know his relation to Axel... in the end, she had to agree. Axel's safety was primary and she knew this man was on their side, especially when he handed her his weapon.

Normally, Naminé would have refused, but tonight, she took the pipe, which was surprisingly heavy in her hands.

"I will. Just let me know tomorrow if he's alright if I can't find you," Naminé asked. She had no idea where David was going with Axel, nor if Xigbar or Axel knew him. But for now, she just had to go along with it.

And Naminé ran off past Manah and into the open door.

Five minutes? It would be longer than that, she already knew. In that condition, it wasn't safe for Axel to be moved, but Naminé could stay with him, reassure him. She could provide strength, without really realizing that she could.

Or that's what Manah hoped, anyway.

She let a minute go by in silence, keeping a close eye on the victorious duo creeping toward the door. Forgotten? She didn't mind, it was better than the hate. It was better than facing agony. For this moment, which went by so slowly. It reminded her of Seere, but she quickly abandoned those thoughts. Seere was a good boy, he wasn't someone that a person as tainted as herself should consider. That's right, he wasn't important anymore, because perfect Seere hadn't been chosen.

Smiling to herself, Manah turned and began walking slowly down the corridor. "La," she sounded, swaying again. "La la la la," the next sequence, in the exact tone of the first, came with a giggle, "La la la la la!" Apparently she didn't care if Ashton or Xigbar regarded her, and she threw open her arms. The progress forward had been halted, now she twirled while moving forward. Much like before, except with more danciness on Manah's part, the door she opened slammed shut. There was an additional sound to go with it though, one that meant the door was being locked.

Somehow, the movements got her in front of the door a lot faster, which made the timing something around: "SHUT, LOCK, STEP!" She stopped there, facing both Ashton and Xigbar.

In spite of what Snake thought, he was not invisible. Blanking his mind wasn't going to do anything against her type, even if it did something for Psycho Mantis. A perk of being the child-pawn of the Gods? More than likely; after all they were not named 'The Watchers' without reason.

Manah, who had been terribly close to the door the entire time, half-glanced back at Snake. Prying the door open like that, didn't he believe he'd catch her attention? He must have thought she was stupid, but for her lack of age, she was rather coherent. Just then she could have easily swept him aside, but he went ahead anyway.

Slowly, the persona that had called out in laughter and smiles was disappearing, replaced by something far more sinister.

"No," it was clear defiance, uttered in that overpowering tone. There was no mixture between her voice and the Watcher's, not that there had been yet, but it was far more dramatic to phrase the change like that. "Stay back, stay back. The Watchers will be here. The Watchers will not wait."

And Manah, or rather the Watchers, turned on her heel. She entered the room.
