Day 53: Lunch

Nov 30, 2010 15:05

There was little to be said of the daily business that went on. He allowed himself to be shuffled, mind embedded too deeply in things he shouldn't be dwelling on. The night was over, the shadows had vanished, and there was little more than bad memories to be left in their stead. This was logic, pure and simple, and should have been reassuring but ( Read more... )

When her nurse announced that it was lunch time, Amaterasu practically ran to the cafeteria. Ritsu had once again left her exasperated and her temples were tingling with the start of a headache. She knew it wasn't his fault; that was just the way he was. Still, the goddess was in desperate need of a solid meal to cure her of her mood.

The day's menu had strange items in it once again. She piled as much as her nurse allowed onto her plate, studying each thing carefully by giving it a sniff. Once she could take no more, the goddess started her search for a place to sit.
Other patients were already pouring in and no familiar faces were among them. Perhaps she should wait for a friend to show up?

No.
Her distress from earlier returned to mind. She needed to help other patients while she was stuck here, divine powers or not. Sitting idly by and waiting for others would not achieve anything. If there were people out there who needed her, she had to go to them.

Ammy's eyes immediately fell to one man who was sitting alone.
His skin was much darker than others she had seen, with a thin frame and a narrow face to match. The expression he wore was easy to translate; disdain. Did he need help . . . ? There was only one way to find out.
The goddess sat at the table beside him, setting her tray down and offering up a smile.

"Is something wrong?"

When someone kindly took the seat beside him without so much as asking, Scar considered interrupting his disdainful look to glance at the poor fool who had just joined him to be somewhat appropriate. Not necessarily out of politeness (though he supposed it helped), but there were certain advantages to knowing with whom he was to have this obligatory social interaction with. Said glance revealed a female offering a smile. Along with a question. Hnn.

Perhaps he was merely being cynical, but were there things that somehow could not be wrong in this place?

Unfortunately, she was apparently being quite serious. In favor of not necessarily antagonizing the entire patient populace by ignoring them (even though the option may have been preferable sometimes...), he supposed an answer was required.

He faked a thoughtful look. "Well, I am still trapped in this dreadful place, I have a head injury on display, my night was remarkably degrading at best, and I am forced to put up with the head doctor's cryptic ramblings and this utterly ridiculous food," the former lion offered. He paused, allowing his words to sink in before he continued on an equally sarcastic tone:

"But other than that, everything couldn't possibly have been any better. Thank you kindly for asking." He smiled briefly at that, though anyone with a brain would realize that it wasn't a genuine one.

Wow.
He sure had a lot of problems. And they weren't problems she could just fix by finding a missing item or blooming a nearby tree. Amaterasu was going to have to work a lot harder in order to make this one happy.
Also, maybe it was just her imagination, but she could swear she saw a hint of annoyance beyond his smile . . .

The goddess looked down at her plate, thinking of a proper response. What could she possibly do to make him happy? Most of the things the dark-skinned man had mentioned were beyond her (severely limited) knowledge and power.
He had mentioned having an injury. Unfortunately, she didn't have any Holy Bones lying around. As far as Ammy was concerned, those were the best for damaged health.
He also said the food was 'ridiculous', which dumbfounded her. Just how picky could a person be when it came to his food?! It was a silly problem, but it was easier to solve than the rest of them.

"Well . . ." Amaterasu started, trying not to let her face falter. "W-what food do you l-like?"

There had to be something around the institute she could find for him. Food was everywhere back home! In the trees, buried in the ground and sometimes even hidden in pots and vases.
. . . Were there pots and vases lying around Landel's . . . ?

It would seem his sarcasm had completely escaped the woman's notice. Well, he supposed not everyone was fortunate enough to be gifted with any braincells.

"No offense, but I truly doubt you'll be able to get the food that I'd usually eat even if I do take the time to tell you," he offered dryly. Of course, this poor fool wasn't quite aware of his former form, much less his diet, but that hardly made any difference.

And even if the stars aligned and this female would hunt for him for whatever reason, Scar didn't quite entertain the idea of eating overgrown, decaying rats.

[Argh, Sam, I am so sorry! I had so much stuff that caught up with me. Would you be okay with back-threading? If not, that is fine!]

Out of all the other patients lingering in the cafeteria, Ammy had chosen a very stubborn one to help. The goddess's reaction to Scar's words easily displayed across her face, with her eyebrows narrowed together and her lips curled into a frown.
She ignored his obvious doubt in her capabilities and decided to change the subject.

"What is your name?"

Amaterasu wasn't about to give up on this. If there was a will, there was a way. And maybe if she knew a bit more about this man, maybe she could find a better way to ease his emotions.

[No worries <3]

Oh my, he had made her frown. Scar was truly beside himself with guilt. Or would have, had he cared. Well, he supposed not everyone was capable of dealing with the truth.

"Scar," he answered to the sudden change of topic. If she someone missed why he was named such, he was going to be disappointed. "And what would yours be?"

Never let it be said that he wasn't polite. Whenever he felt like it, anyway...
