Day 53: Breakfast

Nov 21, 2010 08:08

With sigh that toed the ambiguous no-mans-land between soft and explosive, Yuffie collected a plateful of waffles with all the toppings. She was sure that, if nothing else, it'd making a pretty satisfying splat if-when?-she launched it at somebody's face, and that was all that counted ( Read more... )

She sniffed back her runny nose as Peter started patting her shoulder. He was being nicer than she expected him to be. Maybe it wasn't that bad.

"I do. That's why-- I really wanted to catch him. And drag him back into the Company. Because it'd be like I fixed my mistake, right? And Daddy would be proud of me for once."

That started a whole new wave of tears. "He killed him! He killed my daddy and then I got fired and then my powers stopped working and now I'm here and now I don't have anything." Elle was dangerously nearing scene-making territory, but didn't have the social skills to even remotely notice or care.

With that out of her system, she sniffled again and tried to regain composure. She wasn't going to look that threatening if she kept bawling in the middle of the cafeteria.

Her expression turned into a determined scowl. "That's why I have to kill him. I have to get revenge for Daddy and everyone else Sylar killed. … I can count on you to help me, right? And make sure he doesn't…" She drew a line in the air to demonstrate.

Hearing Elle explain her goals in that way, they actually made some sense. She felt like she needed to prove herself while also making up for what she thought she'd done (Peter was pretty sure Sylar would have ended up killing people no matter what had happened to him, but that wasn't a thought he needed to share right now). And apparently she had this fixation on pleasing her father, which didn't make much sense from what Peter had inferred about the guy.

What he hadn't expected to hear was that the man was now dead, seeing how Elle had been visited by a brainwashed version of him before Sylar had gotten to her. He stared at the girl for a moment, but quickly decided that he shouldn't share that bit of information. It was possible that Landel had revived the man and then brainwashed him, but if that was the case, then did Elle really need to know? It would probably just make those tears flow even faster...

When she made the motion with her finger, though, Peter frowned and shook his head. "That definitely won't be happening again." He had already decided that Sylar needed to die, and had even said that he would be the one to do it, if it came to that. Still, actually mustering up the courage to take someone's life was something that Peter was still struggling with. "We'll take care of him," he said nonetheless, because he wanted to be strong for Elle right now.

"Anyway, I know that we're pretty powerless here and it's a tough situation, but we've just got to focus on what we can do. If we just sit around and wallow over it, nothing's going to happen... so try to work with us, okay?" Peter wasn't totally willing to trust Elle just yet, but getting her on their side would definitely be a good starting point.

"Good." The flood had receded. For now. "There's strength in numbers, right? I mean, there's me, and you, and Pom-Pom, and … anyone else he managed to piss off while here." She considered counting Isaac, but it was a tough call. People who ran away from giant spiders weren't really heroic material.

Their plotting together had given Elle the strength to finish off her waffle and down some more water. "So, um, I'll work for you. I guess. Do you want to … shake on it or something?"

It was actually surprising that Sylar hadn't pissed off more random people, but maybe it was just that Peter didn't know about them. With the way that he tossed out whatever random name that he wanted, there was a chance that there were others and they just didn't realize that he was the same person. At the same time, his attempts to rally people against Sylar on the bulletin board hadn't worked so well in the past, and he hadn't even had much luck with the guy's roommate.

But Spock was just weird in general, so he wasn't going to blame himself too much for that.

"You'll work with me, not for me," he corrected her. It wasn't like he planned to order her around, and he wouldn't have liked an arrangement like that anyway. Shaking on it sounded like a good way to make it more official, though, and so he nodded and extended his hand toward her.

Peter still didn't know how much he trusted Elle, but at least he was on better terms with her now. Either way, they had at least one goal in mind (maybe two, since he assumed that she wanted to escape), so that was a step in the right direction.
