All of those affected by their shadows suddenly found the night fading to black around them, their friends' pleas becoming more and more muted as their shadows' whispers echoed through their heads.
Some, through their haze, might have still heard the Head Doctor's words as he made his final broadcast for the night:
"There, there, now - it's only what you see every day. And when you wake up the morning, you'll be able to neatly pack it away again and stash it where your allies and enemies aren't able to see. Unless, of course... they have already seen it. Then..."
A pained groan could be heard from the other side of the Head Doctor's room as his footsteps sounded on the floor.
"...Then, it's far too late to do anything. Isn't that right, dear?"
Another sound - nearly defiant. The Head Doctor chuckled.
"Fine, then. Let's have it your way."
The intercom's static quieted, then disappeared completely.
