In the 1880s, after South Dakota's broders were drawn up, the surveyor working his way south missed the suryevor working his way north by about a mile. In order to finish their job, the men decided to join the boundaries with a slight east-west jig - a mistake visible on any map where South Dakota intersects the borders of Montana and Wyoming.
