I watched it on DVD.
There is the beat where Holmes goes to a restaurant and he pulls out his pocketwatch. Then he hears it tick. He has a moment where he experiences what is going on in the watch. Then he hears a cacophony of sounds....the clatter of silverware and china, voices that are too loud yet indistinct.
I played it three times and then stop the movie to googl some interviews with director Guy Richie. I knew there was no way he got that by accident. It was the best depiction of an auditory processing disorder I have ever seen outside of my own head. Seriously. That is exactly what the world is like for me. I was, as Mistress Jenna says, 'absolutely gobsmacked'.
Richie wanted his Holmes to have AS because there is a school of thought that says Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was an Aspie and wrote the traits into his characters. No way to really dx the dead, though. Richie gave his Holmes a bunch of different qualities to make him complicated and more real as a character. He decided that the processing disorder made him more human and wanted to explore showing that side of complexity to the audience without any comment on what it was. Since this is going to at least be a trilogy Richie wanted some character traits to explore later on.
Anyway, Richie had all the Aspies among his staff and friends (and Good God are there a lot of us in the film industry) give him feedback and then he showed them cuts until he got it. Downey Jr. has been studying martial arts and Richie brought that in also. He did not want the flabby, stodgy Holmes and Watson of the black and white era.
Everyone with that processing disorder has AS but not all Autistics have processing disorders. In fact, most Aspies do not have them. Just the sensitivity to light and sound, some faceblindness, some hyperfocus. That's the normal package. Auditory disorders are a serious disability. As in, late to talk+word salad in childhood. I like to laugh mine off, but if you have one without a proper dx it can ruin your life: set your education back years, prevent you from getting a driver's license, ect. I drive ect. because my father taught me to, not because the school system wanted it.
Anyway, processing disorders: Watch Sherlock Holmes. Get entertained. Experience hyperfocus and an auditory disorder. Learn Kung Fu.
But don't experiment on your dog. That's just wrong.
