Well, I started off June working like a madwoman so I would have everything in place to leave work for a week for our NYC trip.
But first, we had graduation. Christie graduated from high school and we were justifiably proud of her academic and personal success. That Friday we picked up her sister Kate and headed back to the arena where three short years ago she had worn the dark green cap and gown and marched to Pomp and Circumstance. Christie was excited but also oddly calm and mature. She donned the robe at the car and then her "honors bling"...a gold cord for distinguished honors, her white satin mantle for NHS and her large gold medal for being in the Top 10 of her class. No slouch there.
Kate, her dad and I went to find good seats and met up with one of the boys who used to live across the street. He had come back to watch Chris graduate and we were honored to have him with us and to invite him to dinner. We did not see her til the graduates had already processed in and taken their seats. Even with the bling...there were a lot of NHS/distinguished grads, thank God for the hubcap size medal! Was really neat to have Gwen as one of the small ensemble who sang, her voice is like an angel. Soon though, it was the main event. It was really an honor to hear Christie's name followed by: "Distiguished Honor Graduate, Top Ten, Extended Studies Diploma" and to watch her poise as she paced purposefully across the stage.
After, we rounded her up and headed for a wonderful local place to meet up with her GPa. He had not "felt up to" going to graduation which seemed odd. We knew he had not been feeling well and was getting some tests done but the difference in him was stark and frightening to the point that we were concerned to leave for NYC. He and his "Ladyfriend" prevailed upon us to go and so we did...but we are in for many hard days ahead.
The next day we finished packing and headed out to NoVA to stay with Tom and Denise before taking the train up to NYC. We were worried we would be too much on her but I think ended up a welcome respite particularly as the senior Mrs. H took so well to Chris.
Sunday we woke early and left for NYC. I will post a day by day on that later today.
