“Son of a bitch!”
Gwen sat alone at the table in her house, nursing a cup of hot tea, fuming and fussing. She was beyond angry. She was pissed.
“How dare he!” she said to the air. “How dare he take off like that! Not even a goodbye!”
Gwen’s reunion with Lancelot had been brief and painful. She had expressed her feelings for him and he for her.
“Then he just up and leaves. And why? Because Arthur has feelings for me. Feelings that I didn’t even know about until weeks before I was kidnapped.”
When Lancelot arrived in Camelot the previous year, Gwen had immediately taken a liking to him, and apparently, he felt the same. Although nothing was said, the way he looked at her spoke volumes. And when he was denied acceptance as a knight of Camelot, he left. Gwen understood his reason for doing so and thought she would never see him again.
So, when Arthur made plain his feelings for her by kissing her, Gwen was pleased to accept them. It was surprising, unexpected, and nice. Gwen freely admitted to herself that it was very nice. Arthur was a good man at heart, even if he was occasionally rude and arrogant, and he would be a great king in time. Even though there could be nothing even approaching a commitment between them right now - King Uther was be furious if he found out - they shared many meaningful looks.
When Gwen was kidnapped, it could be said that Lancelot rescued her purely by accident. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Arthur, on the other hand, defied the king and came after her. The look on Arthur’s face when he saw how Gwen and Lancelot felt about each other tore at her heart. She never wanted to hurt Arthur, but Lancelot had gotten to her affections first. Apparently, Lancelot saw Arthur’s look too.
Gwen continued to fume and fuss. “He goes, ‘Oh dear, Arthur wants Gwen, and I must not come between them because I’m so bloody noble.’ So, what does he do? He takes his oh-so-noble butt and scampers off to the bloody hills! Did he ask me what I wanted? Did he think about my feelings? NO! Inconsiderate bastard! And now, Arthur’s moping about the castle like love’s lost boy, afraid to look at me, afraid to even come near me. Way to go, Gwen, you’ve lost two good men in one day. That’s got to be a record.”
With a heavy sigh, Gwen finished her now lukewarm tea, got up and put the cup in the sink bucket. She’ll do the dishes tomorrow. As she started to blow out the candles, there was a knock at her door. When she opened it, she was shocked to find the crown prince of Albion standing there.
“I don’t care, Gwen,” he said without preamble. “I know how you feel about him, but if you could find it in your heart to save a little for me…..”
Gwen invited Arthur inside. He could help her do the dishes in the morning.
